May You Find a Light - Josh Garrels
This world can be hard. In Josh Garells’, “May You Find a Light,” I believe he’s singing about hope. To me, this song is a prayer, a fervent wish, for those facing the hardest times, to find that light-find that hope. It’s particularly important as we close out this crazy year and consider the year ahead of us. In a world of darkness, may we be someone’s light.
Thanks, once again, lending your ear. Peace.
Lost and weary traveler,
Searching for the way to go
Stranger, heavy-hearted,
Longing for someone to know
May you find a light
May you find a light
May you find a light to guide you home.
There are weary travelers,
Searching everywhere you go
Strangers who are searching,
Longing deeply to be known.
Thanks, once again, lending your ear. Peace.
Lost and weary traveler,
Searching for the way to go
Stranger, heavy-hearted,
Longing for someone to know
May you find a light
May you find a light
May you find a light to guide you home.
There are weary travelers,
Searching everywhere you go
Strangers who are searching,
Longing deeply to be known.

Beautiful - Tim O'Keefe

I spent last week with our grandson, Jack. One of the best weeks of my life. Truly. Feeding, naps, walks, diapers-all of it. I love that new little human more than I can express. Since I’ve been back home, I’ve had dreams about him and look forward to the pictures his folks graciously send almost every day. Here is the song I wrote when he was still fresh. It’s called “Beautiful.” I posted it j...
Father to Son - Phil Collins
มุมมอง 21หลายเดือนก่อน
When I first learned “Father to Son” by Phil Collins a few weeks ago, I thought about the heartache our sons have gone through from time to time. If you get to be in your early 30s it’s going to happen. Your heart is broken for them. It happens to us all. Lately, I think about our new grandson-Jack. When I look into his eyes I see such potential. For everything. Love, laughter, plenty of good t...
Never Apart The Avett Brothers
มุมมอง 2หลายเดือนก่อน
I’m not sure what “Never Apart” from the Avett Brothers’ new album is about. I suspect it connects to losing someone close, maybe to death, maybe (metaphorically) to a broken heart. It’s a song about farewells, departures, probably final ones. It reminds me of saying goodbye to my mom, my sister Ruth and me holding her hand, loving her out. It’s a signal to live life to the fullest and to take ...
Moe David Wilcox

I admit that I’m drawn to more sobersided songs. Break up songs, introspective songs, loss, longing. Here’s a David Wilcox song that’s just fun. You must be a certain age to relate to it. If you have no knowledge of THE THREE STOOGES, the lyrics might be lost on you. But if you do… Thanks for listening. Always appreciated. “Moe” Back in Brooklyn when I was ten As if to prove that we were men My...
Love That Boy Blues - Walter Dean Meyers

I posted this one a few weeks ago on guitar. Here it is again on the 6-string banjo. "Love That Boy" is from a poem by Walter Dean Meyers. Hope you like it. Love that boy like a rabbit loves to run Said I love that boy like a rabbit loves to run Love to call him in the morning Love to call him, “Hey there, son” He walks like his grandpa, grins like his Uncle Ben I said he walks like his grandpa...

Love That Boy - by Walter Dean Meyers

“Love That Boy” is a poem by Walter Dean Meyers from a beautiful picture book called BROWN ANGELS. It sounded a lot like 12-bar blues, so I put it in the key of E. This has always been one of students’ favorites. Hope you like it too. Love that boy like a rabbit loves to run Said I love that boy like a rabbit loves to run Love to call him in the morning Love to call him, “Hey there, son” He wal...
Danny's Song - Kenny Loggins
มุมมอง 103 หลายเดือนก่อน
Thinking about the birth of our grandson, Jack, I thought I’d try “Danny’s Song” from Loggins and Messina’s first album Sittin’ In. It was written by Kenny Loggins for his brother Danny at the birth of his first child. It’s about a young man rejoicing about the changes in his new family. Hard to believe it was written in 1970 (that simply makes me feel ancient), but the emotions are just as rea...
Twenty Six - by Tim O'Keefe
มุมมอง 23 หลายเดือนก่อน
I wrote most of “Twenty-Six” in the Albuquerque airport, and on my flight home to South Carolina. I was sharing space in the terminal with a man reading the local newspaper, when he closed the paper, put his head in his hands and cried. I don’t know what upset him, but it made me consider the many ways that the twenty-six letters of our alphabet, and by extension, all alphabets, record the best...
It Moves Me - by David Wilcox
มุมมอง 13 หลายเดือนก่อน
One of my favorite songwriters for the past 25 or 30 years is David Wilcox. He is an amazing guitarist and singer as well. If you don’t know his music, he’s worth a deep dive. This is one you won’t find on any recording. I saw this on his FB feed and learned it. “It Moves Me” is a song about wanderlust, about being a kid in Ohio and dreaming of hopping a train to Santa Fe, where he meets a fell...
Casey's Last Ride - Kris Kristofferson
มุมมอง 193 หลายเดือนก่อน
“Casey’s Last Ride” is a country ballad by Kris Kristofferson. But it’s so much more. After reading of his death last week, I searched my archives and found a bunch of his old songs. “You Show Me Yours,” Sunday Morning Coming Down,” “Me and Bobby McGhee,” and a few others. But this one stands out. It’s a marvel. I learned it when I was just starting to play and sing. I was moved by this one and...
Beautiful - For Jack. by Tim O'Keefe

Here’s some exciting news. Our son Devin and his wife Shae are the proud parents of Jack David O’Keefe. He’s a beautiful blessing for all of us. As some of you know, seeing your child with children of their own, reveals essential strength and goodness, grace and divinity. Holding Jack has been some of the most exquisite, spiritual time of my life. We couldn’t be happier. Here is a little song I...
