The Tolka River in Dublin, by kayak.
November 2024. The video shows the navigable parts of the river. Starting at Weir House at high tide. The minimum draft on this kayak with just me and no extra gear is approximately 30cm. That was the depth of the water at Weir House. The boat bottomed out at that point.

One of the reasons I got a SOF was because of the light weight and ease of carrying. When you've been on the water for a few hours, every kilogram makes a difference. At this location there are very tricky and sharp boulders on one side of the portage. It wouldn't have been possible in a plastic sea kayak to carry the boat over my shoulder and still navigate those rocks. Kayak built by Valkyrie...

    The NTA are another poor NGO. Cyclistists need to avoid lights which are only there because of cars. They solution of putting a light for cyclists could work if only the cars were stopped and all cyclists could cross over each other. The lights slow you down so much that you might as well be in a car.

      There are lots of studies of the negative health effects due to air pollution, including that caused by internal combustion engines and tire and brake dust. Approximately 1.5K people die in Ireland every year due to air pollution. Tens of thousands of people die in the UK each year due to air pollution caused by vehicles alone. And that's not even including the negative health impacts from air pollution, even if it doesn't kill you. Cardiovascular disease is liked with air pollution. Degenerative brain disorders (eg alzheimers) is linked to air pollution. Reporductive health is negative impacted by air pollution. Growth in children is stunted by air pollution. Brain development in children is stunted by air pollution... and the lists go on and on and on. AND... there are yet even more negative effects due to car-culture outside those of air pollution.

    Hi there, I'm curious how the kayak has held up for you as I'm trying to compare Nautiraid to Nortik. Have you had any issues with the frame specifically the various connectors? Some of the wood pieces look rather thin to me from the videos I have been able to find, have any split in half for you? And what about the skin, is it durable? Anything else you can tell me about the kayak would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    • @citizenwolf8720
      @citizenwolf8720 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Skin-on-frame kayaks are 100% seaworthy. Remember the original users of these types of boats depended on them for their lives. I've had no issues with the framing pieces on the nautiraid. You do have to take care of this type of boat more than a rigid-construction boat made from fiber-glass, plastic or carbon, to ensure that it dries out properly and that you store it properly. But as far as performance is concerned, these boats are totally capable. But it all depends on your needs and what type of boat you want, what type of conditions you'll be using the boat in, how far you might need to carry the boat (weight), etc. Skin-on-frame boats flex in the water, whereas rigid boats don't. The slight flexing in skin-on-frame makes these types of boat feel different to rigid boats, and I prefer skin-on-frames because of that. But... everyone has different preferences.

    • @itotallycare
      @itotallycare 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@citizenwolf8720 Much appreciated! So you haven't had to replace any pieces or tighten anything? Sounds like there is no maintenance necessary is that right? What about setting up, I understand that the first time(s) can take a while but having owned the kayak for a couple of years now how fast would you say you go from bag to ready for launch without actually rushing?

    • @citizenwolf8720
      @citizenwolf8720 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you care for it properly, then the wooden elements will last a long time. I haven't replaced anything. And if somehow you did manage to beak a segment, you could just replace it with a suitable piece of wood. How fast is the set-up? I can't actually answer because there are lots of elements involved in each launch-point. Remember, even with a plastic boat, there's always time taken up faffing about with other things, and those other things that need to be done get mixed up in the process of getting the boat on the water. So I can't say how long it takes just to assemble the boat. If that's something that'll bother you, then just go with a rigid boat with no assembly required. A folding boat like the Nautiraid is sometimes the only option if you need to transport the boat via a train, or plane or if you have very limited storage at home. If these things aren't a consideration, then you may as well look at a non-folder. My needs have changed sinceI got the Nautiraid and now I have more storage available than I did, so I also have a non-foldable skin-on-frame. The frame on my new boat is also wooden and I have no concerns about durability. @@itotallycare

    • @itotallycare
      @itotallycare 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@citizenwolf8720 Alright I really appreciate the information. I am indeed in a position where I need a foldable kayak as I don't have the space to keep a hard shell. It's not entirely clear to me that I wouldn't want a foldable/skin on frame kayak even if I did have the space for a hard shell actually as I would still appreciate being able to travel with it and store it out of the way, it will have to depend on how well the foldable/skin on frame paddles in comparison to a hard shell. I was going to say that I would subscribe for more and longer footage of you using this kayak but I guess you have moved on from it for the most part.

    • @citizenwolf8720
      @citizenwolf8720 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As for performance: There are many other considerations aside from just whether a kayak is foldable or not that determine the performance characteristics. Nautiraid kayaks have good performance characteristics for sea-kayaking. But again it depends on your particular kayaking circumstances as to which type of boat is most suitable. Because I now have more storage space, I can have a non-foldable boat, and so I decided to stick with a skin-on-frame construction because it allowed me to have a new sea-kayak that weighs only 14.5kg. The light weight means that I'm more likely to use it on a random basis becuse it's easier to lift and carry etc. @@itotallycare

      I've used it in an outer fly only configuration a couple of times, and the condensation is unholy. And this was with a footprint. One trip I stayed in the same spot 2 nights in a row to compare it outer fly only vs with inner fly. It was the same conditions both nights, and the difference in condensation on the outer fly was unreal to behold. With the inner tent up, there was essentially no condensation on the inside of the outer fly. But without the inner tent it was just like in the video above. And just to point out that in the video above, the door was half open the whole night, and still the condensation gathered. I've seen a video from a German guy who has used the Unna a lot, high in the mountains over there, and he's used it in an outer fly only configuration, and he didn't complain about condensation. Maybe it's just an Ireland thing.

    • @citizenwolf8720
      @citizenwolf8720 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what sort of trailer you have. You can get one that goes in the boat. Otherwise pick areas that you can stash the trailer out of sight. I have 2 types of trailer: one of them will break apart and can go in/on the boat; the other trailer is more sturdy and suitable for long distances. This bigger one also packs down flat, albeit too big for the boat, so it gets hidden out of sight. I've never had any issues. Just be sensible and be aware of the social environment. As for the bike, it's not any different than when you cycle anywhere - lock it securely. I don't use an e-bike. It's just a regular bike.
