maar wat ik probeer te zeggen je rotterdams acc is voor mij totaal niet herken baar als mensen zo praten in rotterdam dan zijn dat meestal oude mensen rond de 50 60 dus ik vraag me af dat je mischien rotterdamse accent kan doen zoals het nu is?

Even though in the video it was Dutch with different accents, most of the Dutch-based languages referred to as dialects are in fact different languages, not dialects, including Limburgish and West-Vlaamse and Twents and the 3 Frisian languages and Afrikaans etc! I am learning them all, and I got to an advanced level in Dutch (over 8.000 base words) after only about 3 months of focusing on Dutch, and am intermediate level in Norwegian / German / Swedish, and beginner level in most other Germanic languages, and I could understand it without the English subs, only with the Dutch subs, and there were less than ten new Dutch words in the video! Dutch is so fun to learn, because almost all words are super pretty and easy to remember!

I'm sorry to hear about your oma. But what a sweet way to get in touch with her again! And yeah, the hard guttural G sound in Dutch is actually a relatively recent development. In the south of the Netherlands, in Flanders, and in Suriname, too, G sounds are still pronounced much more softly, more like they used to in the Holland region as well up until a few centuries back. My knowledge of Indonesian-Dutch accents is rather limited, but you might want to get in touch with @ky.kale on Instagram. He's a Dutch guy of Indonesian descent I know who is quite the expert on Indo accents and Indonesian-Dutch history! Terima kasih!

The pronunciation of the G as a H is very typical for the West- Flemish accent. If your oma came from the Netherlands, she came most likely from Zeeland. The Zeelands dialect is either considered to be a variant of West-Flemish or closely related to it (depending from where you are in Zeeland). I put a small video in West Flemish as an example. Oh je comment doet me veel plezier, Nina! Ik voel me ook vaak ontmoedigd, want er zijn weinig situaties in het leven waarin veel accenten kunnen imiteren écht waardevol lijkt. Maar als ik er mensen online of in het echt mee kan doen lachen, mee kan vermaken en zelfs inspireren dan geeft dat toch weer voldoening! Hi Juan Carlos, I've had comments from Surinamese folks either telling me it was rather accurate or writing it wasn't accurate at all. A few people said they appreciated my attempt anyway and I know of one comment from someone stating they felt offended by my imitation. The Surinamese accent was the one I felt the least confident about in terms of accuracy as it is one I, as a Belgian, am not as frequently exposed to. That's why I considered not including it so as not to do it an injustice and offend the Surinamese people. But then I figured I might do them a disservice by leaving them out. A few of my European Dutch accents aren't 100 percent accurate either after all. I can genuinely understand why some Surinamese people would find my imitation offensive. Embarrassingly, my take on the accent is a little stereotypical. So I can assure you that if I were to make this video now, I would consult a Surinamese person before uploading and I'd do the accent differently or refrain from doing it altogether.

I am currently doing some research on The situation of Dutch Language in the ABC - SSS islands and Suriname to understand better how Dutch coexists with in Sranang (in Suriname), Papiamento (in the ABC islands) and English (in the SSS islands) and I was trying to understand if your imitation of the accent was actually accurate, since I know little about the difference between European and South American Dutch. Yeah, I think before uploading these kind of videos it’s always better to back up things with good research. Perhaps understanding what the features of Surinamese Dutch exactly are. I think they pronounce there w’s like normal w’s unlike what the Dutch/Belgians do pronouncing them as v’s, etcetera. Good job anyway as far as I can tell! (I don’t speak Dutch)

Belgians and people in the south of the Netherlands pronounce their w's like they do in English as well. People in the rest of the Netherlands do indeed pronounce them more like v's. And I'm pretty well acquainted with the differing features of Surinamese Dutch. It's just that there's also a distinctive melodious intonation to it, as well as a distinctive nasality that we don't have in European Dutch, which makes it particularly challenging to mimic and can make you sound as if you're making fun of them if you're doing it in a slightly exaggerated way.

Cités is een straattaal uit Belgisch Limburg. En Maaseikers is het dialect dat in de stad Maaseik wordt gesproken.
