The Red Door Garage
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 ก.พ. 2022
This will be a series of home/how-to videos to show what can be done inside a small two-car garage with a minimum of affordable hand and power tools. I am by no means an expert or professional, I am merely relying on many years of experience in personal vehicle and equipment maintenance. The results have saved me money over dealership fees and replacement costs throughout the years. I do this because I am cheap, but mainly so that I can keep an eye out for problems that might arise due to poor maintenance practices. Please do not take what I say or do as the best or only way do do these operations. Many of you watching might feel that your methods and procedures are better than mine, and they might very well be. I am only trying to showcase what can be done with a minimum of investment, and a lot of interest and curiosity.

Thanks for the video, very helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Commenting from England 🇬🇧 I just wanted to praise your professional, almost studio quality, video. I am doing the opposite to my 2017, 1.5, simply hoping to add an induction roar! Each to his own, I suppose. Regards. Alan.
Thanks for the comments. I started this channel as a form of therapy to help me work through some things. What you are doing is quite common...a lot of people like the extra engine noise. Enjoy your MX-5. Only a few weeks until I put mine to bed for the winter.
At what mileage did you do this? Also do you have a video on the transmission fluid? I would like to see that, I like how you present your contentz
The odometer read 17,500 miles. Too early for most people, but I treat this car differently than all my other cars. I did the transmission fluid change at the same time, but have not edited the film yet...coming soon. Thanks for the comments, and thanks for watching.
@@thereddoorgarage8606 thanks!
Old oil is good, not black
I did the fluid change very early, so it was probably still good. I was curious to see how much metal was stuck to the magnet. This fluid doesn't usually turn black like engine oil, if it is then something is wrong.
@@thereddoorgarage8606 i changing oil in my rear diffrential at 120K and oil looks like yours clean
Where I can find the quick jack that you used? Thanks
Most auto parts and maintenance stores carry them...hobo freight, O'Reilly, that type should carry them, or princess auto, Canadian Tire if you live north of the border. Sometimes quick jack themselves have sales through their website. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for this video! I got brakes and rotors done on my mazda cx3 today. Apparently they said they need a scan tool for the rear ones and wasn't able to do them. Plus they couldn't get the car out of brake maintenance so I watched the video and went out and tried it! It worked! Thank you!
I'm so glad that this helped. Thanks for watching.
He didn't change the transmission filter. Is the same thing when you change the motor oil. The transmission pan have magnets that receive debris from the transmission. It's supposed to clean the transmission pan, the magnets and change the transmission filter. Is a big blooper.
Not necessarily... changing the fluid at this low mileage will help reduce internal dirt buildup, as well as replenishing the cleaning properties of the lubricant. As I have mentioned in the video I will be changing the filter on my next transmission service, still well before the recommended fluid change interval. It is possible to safely change engine oil without the filter after only a small amount of mileage , again before the recommended interval.
Thank you for this video. I did the same thing. As it turns out, putting the new rack in was easier than I thought. I noticed the mounting hole on the passenger side was slotted (oblong). With one bolt installed loosely in this oblong hole, the other end can be rotated into position, aligning the input shaft at the same time. A one person job. I hope this helps someone as your video has.
Thanks for helpful tips, and thanks for watching.
Oof… watching this Boomer spray his bare hands with brake cleaner isn’t a great feeling. Perchloroethylene (Perc), methylene chloride (MeCl), and trichloroethylene (TCE) are sure to cause issues later in life. Even if he’s 67 at this point, you’d think he’d care about what this is going to do to him in 20 years. 😢
How often should the transmission fluid be changed? Right now our cx3 has 33k miles and i was thinking of changing it. Also, should transfer case and rear differential fluid be changed at the same frequency as transmission? We do not tow with the cx3 at all. Just a daily driver.
The dealership will tell you that mazda has a lifetime fluid in both the transmission and transfer/differential cases. Lifetime for them is just until the drivetrain warranty expires. It is never a bad decision to change these fluids early, or often. Some would say it is a waste of money, but I would say that maintaining your vehicle will let it last longer, as well as give you an opportunity to check for, and address any issues you see. As far as the transmission fluid is concerned, draining and refilling will never get all of the fluid out. A transmission flush and refill is needed for that (as well as a trip to the mechanic who has the machine to perform this service). By dumping and filling you can extend the life of the fluid by continuously diluting old fluid with new, and no trip to the shop is needed. I will be changing the filter on my next service but did not on my first service. Sorry about the long reply, but thanks for watching.
Hello I'm also going to start an oil change of my CX3. I didn't notice if there is a gasket to change on the drain plug. Can you enlighten me on this point? Congratulations for your videos, they are very informative.
Thanks for the nice comments. I always change the drain plug seal...pick them up when I get the filters from the dealership. I've been told that it is not necessary every time as long as the seal is in good shape. For a few bucks every year I have peace of mind. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for posting this. I have been religiously rewatching this. I did the same exact thing. Getting the tie rod ends off was a PITA. Mine is broken in the same exact way as yours, down to the mount point being broken. I just ordered the rack as everything else looks fine. Fingers crossed it works.
Thanks for watching, and thanks for the confidence you give my video. I felt devastated when this happened, and after I calmed down I just started to take things apart and figure out how to repair the damage. At the time there was not a lot of information on you tube, but the guys at the dealership helped a lot. Go slowly and you can do this. Heed the advice about the anti-seize on the tie rods, that helped greatly. Good luck
So you used 4 L of fluid or 8 L of new trans fluid?
I only added 4 litres of new fluid because that is all that came out. In the future when I drop the pan and change the filter I will catch and measure the fluid in the same manner, and replace what comes out. Impossible to get all of it out of the torque converter, but the cleaner the fluid the better to help prolong the life . That is the hope anyway. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video and the time you spend on it!. It would be good to see a video where you change transfer and rear diff fluids on this car.
This car is not an AWD, but my daughter's is, and I will perform these items when she gets some time...thanks for watching.
Great details, nice to see am not the only person that take those extra steps.
Most people won't. Certainly not the dealership. Thanks for watching.
Thanks. I deleted the sound tube from my ND3 today. I could not tell any difference in the cabin sound whatsoever. As far as I can see all I did was remove some ugly and unnecessary plumbing from under the bonnet. It was a very simple process. Word of advice I would give though, is do not drop anything in the engine bay while you are undertaking this delete as you will never be able to recover it and I'm certain it would create a forever rattle 😁.
Thanks for the tip, and thanks for watching.
@@thereddoorgarage8606 When I was deleting the sound tube, I thought I better not drop one of the bolts or the plug as I will never be able to recover from the engine bay. I also have a MGA (interesting comparison to drive back to back) and drop anything in the A's engine back it falls straight to the garage floor.
thanks for the video It would be good to show the old fluid even running a finger through it so we can get an idea roughly what the fluid looks like at various mileage intervals
Good point. I didn't think of that at the time. I was surprised at how dark the fluid was for how little the mileage was. Thanks for the tip, I will use that suggestion on my next fluid change video coming soon. Thanks for watching.
Great video! I am planning to do my very first winter storage for my Miata
Thanks for the comments. It is a shame to put them to bed for such a long time, but hopefully they will hold more value if not driven in winter salt and snow. Cheers.
@@thereddoorgarage8606 Yes, I'm living in Canada where has long and cold winter here. October probably is the last and best time to put them to bed. I am still learning about Miata. Thanks a lot🤝
Great video, what size of extension wrench do you recommend for this job?
I just used my 3/8 drive with two 10" long extensions. Worked well because the airbox was removed.
Excellent!
Many thanks!
Well done, and you even filled your oil filter before installing it. Watching because I might buy a new Mazda, they all seem similar to maintain. Thanks!
My last vehicle was a Golf mark 5. Not easy to work on, expensive fluids and parts, and special tools needed. Both of my Mazdas are easy to work on, use regular tools, and parts aren't an arm and a lung. It also helps that they drive great ( MX-5 is a blast) Thanks for watching.
I recommend beefing up the connection where the wires attach to the LED strip with RTV or something. Mine worked apart after a year.
That sounds like a great idea...thanks for the tip.
👊😎👌
🙂🤘🙂
Very helpful video! I own a 2021 mazda cx3 CVT. I wanted to be sure I had a good understanding of where the filler and drain bolts were located. Thank you!!
Subscribed and liked!
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
I don't believe the Mazda has a CVT, automatic transmission
Yes they come in a CVT and 6 speed manua @megaman4201
Thanks for watching.
Very good info. Good editing. Keep up your work ^_^ I've been using the Cx-3, and I will definitely follow your instruction.

Wow!! Those Quick Jacks are very handy! This video was a big help, Thank you for sharing 😁
I should have bought my quickies years ago... I am glad this helped. Thanks for watching.
Amazing job, thanks!
Glad you liked it! Regular maintenance keeps them running...thanks for the positive feedback.
Worked a treat, great video, thanks.
Glad it helped. Thanks for the positive feedback...
can you please show me where to find this sound tube delete kit ?? a link maybe. Thanks so much. I can't find it in amazon or ebay.
I picked up mine at the Mazda dealership. I paid less for the kit ( tube cap , new intake hose, and nd firewall plug) for less than the cap alone
What a lucky daughter! Great video ◡̈ I loved the attention to detail!
Decent enough tutorial video, but that music level is awful. Knock it down a good bit and it would be far better.😊
Thanks for the input...I edit using headphones and still quite haven't got the audio levels down. This feedback helps me to improve future videos. Thanks as well for watching.
@@thereddoorgarage8606 That's interesting. The music itself wasn't that bad, just the level. I liked the vision editing. Keep on keeping on. 👍
Fantastic video! Very helpful! ◡̈
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching...
Same exact accident happened to me. Jack punched a hole trough the bottom and steering rack is busted. Mazda oem part was quoted at 3400€. Expensive lesson indeed for such an easily avoidable mistake. By the looks of it, the module doesn’t require reprogramming right?
Since I was able to use the original electric motor, no reprogramming was needed. If a new motor is needed then I believe that a learn program will be necessary ( don't quote me on this, the dealership will know for sure.) Good luck with the repair, and thanks for watching...
I am not a brain surgeon..one thing I do is put a towel or blanket in the area where I am working in case I drop the clips ....that way they dont fall into the engine area whete they dissappear forever.
That sounds like a great idea for whatever I am doing...I learn more and more from the comments that you guys write. Thanks for the tip, and thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing this video. Looks like a mistake I would do but I wouldn't have the skills to repair it. I assume you had the jack lift on the center front jack point? If so, when the wood block broke, wouldn't the jack point land on the lift and thus not cause any damage? Unless you weren't on center? Thanks
I must have been slightly forward of the crossmember, when the block split, it rolled out, and the car fell on the raised jack. It seems that my depth perception is out. You say you wouldn't have the skills, but armed with the correct information, and a few hours you might be surprised by how much you can actually do. Thanks for watching...
It's nice to see good quality and informative videos like yours. Nice to meet you today in the parking lot at Napa. I'll be following your channel.
Thanks for the nice comments, and it was good to meet you as well...
No one should be laughing. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Please kindly continue posting videos so we could learn more. 🙏
Thanks for the comments. Plans for more vids soon, just got it back on the road after winter and putting miles on it now. Cheers.
Nice video mate
Thanks for watching...
The usual symptom to look for if this is needed is rough idle. Might want to wear gloves to protect your skin from absorbing any of the sensor cleaner. Yea, I don't either but I should. Presentation on your videos is very professional for a typical backyard mechanic. Well done sir. Way better than most.
You bring up a good point about the idle... and the gloves ( I don't even wear them when using brake cleaner) Thanks for the kind comments
Great video! Thank you. Your videos are thorough, clear, and offer great protips for durability of the vehicle. The application of Permatex and shrinkwrap is very smart!
Thanks for the comments, and for watching...
my jack slipped last night when raising the car, punching a hole in the under cover and coming to rest on the steering rack motor mount. everything feels ok in the steering, but I suspect I need to pull the cover off and make sure nothing is cracked. thanks for posting the video.
I hope all will be OK. I know how you feel...
Not only are your videos technically excellent, your voiceover is superb!
Thanks for the nice comments...I started doing these as a form of therapy to help me work through some things...
What's the part number for the kit?
Got the kit at the dealership... hose kit number PEFA-13-220, and grommet number P51B-13-252. My dealership carries these parts as regular stock. ..
I ask you because you installed both the led strip in the trunk and also the led sequential turn signals like me. I follow every instructions but the right blinker flashes super fast. I replaced the resistance, the wire and also the led strip but it still flashing super fast! The left one flashes right. What could be the problem? I don’t know what to do at this point 😢
You have tried everything that I would check... are any other bulbs in the circuit out? It might be time to contact the manufacturer. I hope you get this worked out. Maybe other comenters can help.
where I can find the kit?
This one was from Flyin miata... but there are other companies that supply the kit as well (Amazon has some others). Install should be very similar. Thanks for watching...good luck with the Install.
It’s don’t have time to worry about it
Most people don't...I just like working on this car. Thanks for watching.
Support comment for the great production on the vid!
Thanks for the nice comments...I started the channel as a form of therapy.
I dont do any of that junk and my mx5 starts up just fine in the spring. 😀
Most people do the same as you , and I know that what I do is overkill, but it is the one time of the year that I get to detail the car. Somehow I hope that the next owner of this car will appreciate the work I am doing. Thanks for the comment.
hey could you explain how to remove the red and black wires if it’s already locked in kinda rushed to put it on and got confused with the orientation now i can’t get them off 😅
Unclipping this style of connector requires a very small ( jeweler's) flat bladed screw driver... you need to insert the blade into the clip, underneath each of the pins. This action will unlock the pins, and while gently pulling on the leads, they will separate. Hope this helps...
Hi. Great video as usual. Would you have a link to where i might get this item? Thank you
I got mine at MX-5 things, but they are available from other vendors as well ( flyin miata etc...) Thanks for watching and for the comment...
