Thank you for this nice video. I painted some old cigar boxes with Ben Moore paint (some are wood, some a heavy cardboard)..I painted and waxed all of it except one side of the lids. Then I put a wax finish on them. About a month later I took them out for part 2 of my project, which is painting watercolors and gluing them onto the lid. However, I found that I must have put on too much wax because they have a sticky feel. I'm going to try Your method before gluing the paintings on. I used Jacquard Dorland's Wax medium, which is supposed to be used for paintings. Should I use another kind to apply the final coat of wax? Will it be a problem to have two types of wax on these boxes? Thanks so much!
It sounds like too much wax, yes. Putting wax over a latex acrylic paint needs to be an extra thin coat because it isn’t absorbing in. I’m not familiar with that brand. You will want to contact them directly for specific information about the nuances of their product. Many waxes would be fine to use in combination with each other but without knowing the solvents used in a particular brand, I am not comfortable saying for sure.
Happened to see your video. Lots of cute items. How would we get more information if interested in a particular item? Thanks!
Wonderful! You can visit our website www.FleurishHome.com or you can text or call me at the shop at 513-295-2675 Monday-Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 12-4

Yes you can shop with us online and both the paint and wax are low voc. We are located in Hamilton Ohio. www.FleurishHome.com
What kind (Brand) of paint and finish are you using?
Jolie Home is the brand name for this product. You can order directly from us at www.FleurishHome.com
What is diy aging dust
It is an organic material used to create aging effects.
Can you paint metal kitchen cabinets with Fusion mineral paint?
I'm not personal a user of that brand but you can recommend Jolie paint for metal kitchen cabinets. I've had long-term success with them holding up beautifully with Jolie.
Why does the chalk paint on my cabinets scuff off easily
Without knowing more about your products and process I can't give you an accurate answer. But I can tell you this: Good prep work is key to every project no matter what materials are being used. That means the surface should be clean (be sure not to use harsh chemicals or leave any cleaner behind on the surface), dry and stable (meaning no loose or chipping paint). Then using a quality product is important. Not all so called "chalk paint" is created equal. Many brands are very poor quality which is why Jolie changed their name to Jolie Matte Finish Paint. Too many brands using inferior ingredients are on the market using the term chalk paint now.
Have you stopped your channel???

I have oil base stain cabinets
Clean them thoroughly with a scotchbrite sponge (the green kind) so they will be cleaned and scuffed up a bit to help speed adhesion/curing. It will be fabulous! No priming needed :)
Can you wax water base paint cabinets?
What kind of base paint is on your cabinets? If you have a type, brand and finish/sheen all of that would be helpful to answer your question.
Did you mention the brand?
Jolie is the brand I use.
Is the wax easy to clean, I asked to soon haha thank you!
As you saw further in the video--yes! It is easy to clean waxed cabinets and maintain them as well as easy clean up of the tools!

hi, my kitchen is mostly real wood but in a small area it is melamine will the chalk and wax work on this type of surface too?
It sure will! I always recommend scuffing the melamine a little bit first and allowing a little extra dry time between coats. It works great!
Deborah, do you ever cover overly-waxed jackets?
I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean.
I'm doing a concrete project. I'm painting over old paint though.
Old paint on concrete needs to be powerwashed to not only clean the surface but remove as much of the old latex paint as possible before repainting as latex paint will continue to chip over time even if covered over as the issue of adhesion only increases with time and weather. Good news though is if you use Jolie to paint next time it won't chip off. Over the coarse of years of sun and weather it will only fade making redoing easier next time.
What kind of paint are you using?
Jolie Home Matte Finish Paint. It is not latex so it soaks into the concrete much like a concrete stain would so it won't chip off. You can purchase it here and use discount code SHOPBONUS! to save 15% until Dec 31, 2022: www.fleurishhome.com/shop/paint-supplies/jolie-matte-finish-paint/

Thanks for this video! I painted a month ago, followed by two coats of wax that I wiped off. It still feels sticky and I can’t seem to buff it to shine. I tried 400 grit, then lightly a 220 grit, and now it looks all scratched up ☹️ suggestions on what to use to fix?
If it feels sticky then there is too much wax. Since you've already tried sanding, I'd suggest taking off some of the excess wax with low odor mineral spirits and some bleached cotton towels or rags in a box. The mineral spirits will only remove the wax and not the paint. After wiping it down, let it dry and see if you need to do a bit more. If you like a bit of shine you can finish it off with buffing it out with #0000 steel wool which will help even out the wax by removing some in the heavier areas and make everything shiny. If you take off too much wax you can always apply a super thin quick coat to even it back out. Let me know how it turns out! Message back if you need any more help--always happy to assist! -Debra
House was built in 1953 with great maple cabinets that have several coats of paint. Some have alligatored paint at corners over the years. Should I sand and prime or just sand before chalk painting? The last coat was latex gloss.
I recommend just sanding if you are using Jolie.
Thanks for your video. We have a kitchen with thermofoil cabinets that looked lovely when we bought our home. About a year ago several doors had the thermofoil peel off. It looks like some sort of pressboard or something like that underneath. Can that be painted with the chalk paints you mentioned? Do I need to seal the cupboards so they don't warp prior to painting? My apologies for all the nervous questions. Warmest thanks :)
Great questions! You should remove all the thermafoil which can be done with a heat gun on low to warm it and it will peel off. The wooden surface that remains is MDF which paints beautifully! Use the Jolie Matte Finish Paint directly on the MDF and seal the paint with wax as shown in the video. They will be beautiful! great video, how often do you rewax as regular maintenance
On kitchen cabinets typically every 2-3 years. If you are more aggressive at washing them down regular once a year tops! If you are the barely cook in my kitchen camp probably never needed!

I love this look with the dark wax. Did you use a brown or black over the gray?
Thank you! I used the brown in this video but both look really pretty over the grey. I opted to warm it slightly with the brown.
Thanks for the reply! So i did this and I'm not into the dark wax, can i just paint right over it and then wax again it will the wax under the chalk paint not work? I'm assuming from what I've heard on this video that i can do that but just making sure there aren't any extra steps i should take
Hi! I've prepped my kitchen cabinets by cleaning them thoroughly and even sanding them lightly. But when I tested out my Annie Sloan chalk paint on a door, painting two coats, I noticed some spots coming through and some of the grain/dark steaks coming through. I'm bummed, because I was hoping to do this project without a primer... But now I think I might have to. Any advice?
What kind of wood is it and what color are you using?
@@FleurishHome They are oak, and I wanted to paint them Annie Sloan Chateau Gray (which is more of a green-gray)
Ok so the oak is probably giving you some tannin bleed through. Priming does not stop that. The only thing that stops it is shellac. I would recommend clear since you are using a mid-tone color. Also when Annie Sloan changed her formula and manufacture we were not happy with her new product so we stayed with the US manufacture that had been paying her a license fee to use her name on their product. That product is now labeled as Jolie Home and is my recommended product. Most of the videos showing AS are using that US formula so if it’s still giving you some troubles after using the shellac I’d recommend trying the Jolie brand instead.
WAY over waxed my first chalk painted upholstered chair. It’s been curing 24 hours inside (65-70 degrees) and still sticky. Should I try the buffing brush or go straight to mineral spirits? I’m afraid I’ll remove the paint-we got the look we wanted with just 1 coat, and used up all of our custom-mixed color! Thank you for your help!
Used Trewax clear paste wax
No worries! This is fixable! I’m not familiar with that brand but the solution is the same regardless of brand. It sounds like you didn’t remove the excess wax as you were going and have too much wax for sure. Gently wipe off the excess wax using several dye free cotton cloths and mineral spirits. Mineral spirits will not remove the paint. The paint is water based so mineral spirits does not affect it. After a few swipes to remove the wax let it rest for 15-20 minutes and check to see how it feels. If barely sticky then buffing it should do the trick to help it cure. If it’s still too sticky then remove some more with the towels and mineral spirits. If you removed too much a quick coat removing the excess immediately with solve that. Some waxes are definitely more compatible than others and easier to work with. I’d recommend trying Jolie next time as I’ve found it to be the most forgiving. Good luck-you’ve got this!
Hello from Louisiana!! I painted my kitchen cabinets with French Linen but I know I used too much paint. Do I need to sand them again and start over. I’m so exhausted and disappointed with myself. I spent all weekend painting them and they are not right. Any information would be appreciated!! Thank You
You will not need to start over! I’d be happy to help guide you to the best solution to get them to where you love them. Can you send me some photos so i can see what you aren’t likening so i can best advise? My email is debra@fleurishhome.com
I have golden oak kitchen cabinets. I would love to make them a light cream color with chalk paint. After watching your video I see that you did not sand the finish before painting. Will the paint hold up over time?
Prep work is key. Making sure they are super clean and dry is truly all that is needed of you use Jolie. Keep in mind not all “chalk paint” is created equal. The big box store brands are very poor quality and will not hold up over time. I have cabinets that i painted 10 years ago that are still holding up beautifully.
Howdy, great video! I am getting ready to do my kitchen cabinets. Have some practice ones and trying different techniques. I am torn between glazing and waxing. Seems that the waxing is way more work? Also do you not use a top coat that's recommended for the chalk paint?
Great questions. Keep in mind not all “chalk paint” is the same. Many so called chalk paints are just poor quality latex paint with lots of chalk in them to make them matte and to get more yield from the product but they will not last. I recommend Jolie as that is what I’ve found to have the best longest lasting results. For kitchen cabinets if you want a glazed finish i personally recommend using a paint wash instead of a glaze because it is easier to do and more forgiving (i have another video on that specifically if you’re interested here on our TH-cam channel) and then sealing with clear wax. That will hold up the best long term with very little to no maintenance and be easy to repair should any mishaps happen to them. You certainly can use a glaze but will then need to use a clear coat varnish over the glaze. I never recommend a poly which is not compatible with matte finish paints and can also yellow over time. Varnish is similar but different and a much better choice. You will still need to watch for drips and runs and should sand in between coats for the smoothest finish. I personally love the look and feel of wax and the ease and speed at which you can apply the wax. It is sooo much faster and easier but it really is a personal choice.
Great video! We are going to try and chalk paint Some metal kitchen cabinets. Anything we need to do differently because of the metal compared to wood?
Keep in mind not all “chalk paint” is the same. Stay away from the brands at the big box stores-they are not good quality paints. I’ve had amazing long term success using Jolie on metal. For best results give yourself a little extra time to complete the project. Keep your paint nice and thin and let each coat dry fully overnight before applying the next. You will need 2-3 THIN coats over the metal. Let the final coat dry overnight before waxing. Do 2-3 thin coats of wax to ensure even coverage keeping in mind you don’t want to leave a waxy build up just good even coverage soaked into the paint. Be gentle with them for the first couple of weeks while they finish curing.
I've just finished the video. It was wonderful and very instructive. I already used chalk paint in my bathroom cabinets and they look nice. I am planning to paint my kitchen cabinets. I would like to know what can use to paint the sides. They are made of laminate wood. Not real wood.
Keep in mind that not all chalk paint is created the same. Many of the brands use a lot of chalk in their paint to make it go further and give it a matte finish but that also leads to poor bonding qualities meaning it either won’t stick to the laminate or won’t last. The Jolie brand we use will adhere and create a strong long lasting bond. Here are my pro tips for painting laminate: Keep your paint nice and thin-your first coat will barely cover and will be uneven and that’s ok. If the paint wants to separate (like a lacey oil in water look reach back out and I’ll give you some additional tips. This is rare but can happen with some surfaces) Let your first coat dry overnight to give it cure time to bond properly to the surface. Paint your second coat and let it dry a minimum of 4 hours if you need a third coat of paint and overnight before you wax it.
Lovely, but quick and easy, maybe not. Seems very time consuming.
Kitchen cabinets are a big project however using Jolie paint and wax compared to any other refinishing method will cut your time in half at minimum! And it is also much much easier and more forgiving than any other products on the market.
I believe I over waxed, but before I was able to fix it some lint or dust stuck to my project. How can I remove the dust? It's a dark blue color so it's pretty noticeable.Thank you.
Yes it does sound like a little over waxing if lint is in your wax. This is very fixable though so no worries! Using a lint free cotton towel or a rag-in-box (not a paper towel) you can do one of two things: 1. If the wax is only a little heavy you can put a little fresh wax on the towel and rub in the surface to “wake up” the dried wax. Fresh wax will soften and remove some of the dried wax and your wiping motion will be able to remove the lint. Immediately use a fresh dry cloth to wipe off the excess wax leaving your surface dry right away. Remember to work in small areas to avoid over waxing. 2. If you can scratch the wax with your finger nail and pull any wax off you’ll want to use some rags in a box (again not paper towels) with some low odor mineral spirits. The mineral spirits will remove the wax but will not harm the paint at all. This can take a couple or several towels to do depending on how heavy the wax or big the area. That will quickly remove anything trapped. Dark colors show every little imperfection. It’s just the opposite for furniture than our clothing. Lol. You’ve got this! If you need more help please don’t hesitate to call the shop.
First-time I have every heard wax your cabinets
This paint is very different than latex though so that’s not surprising. It was a game changer for me when i had my professional refinishing business-faster and easier application, easier to repair any damage/wear down the road, just as durable as factory finish, higher end look and feel than latex but more durable-just a few reasons why i sold my top of the line sprayer and went back to hand painting when i started using Jolie.
How do you clean your cabinet from spills of food that gets on cabinet after waxing?
Just warm soapy water cleans most everything. They really do hold up as well as a varnish. The difference is once varnish starts to wear down you have to strip the finish and completely redo. With wax you can just touch up the wax and you are good as new with a fraction of the time and effort.
You are totally the best 💯👍💯
Aww thank you 🥰
Do you prime the cabinets before painting with chalk paint?
It depends on the brand. If you are using Jolie no primer is needed. Jolie bonds to wax and there are no primers on the market anywhere that bond to wax!
Hello, I just watched one of your video’s on doing kitchen doors with the chalk paint. I have painted glazed cabinets that are from the Kraftmaid Company. They are a light ivory in color. There about 14 years old. I do a lot of cooking. I have a gas and a electric stove. I want to redo them but my husband is telling me I have to have them sprayed because of the lacquered on them. Can you advise me please. I have about 30 cabinets total to do. Can this chalk paint be mixed into a color I would want as other paint can or is there just a few standard colors it comes in? Thank You Linda
Hi Linda! Yes this will absolutely adhere perfectly to your current substrate. You will need to clean them very thoroughly using the method in the video. We can do custom gallons in any color you’d like! We can color match to any other paint company or match a fabric swatch-whatever you’d like.
Hola. La formaica. Se puede pintar
¡Sí tu puedes! Pinta 2-3 capas manteniéndolas muy delgadas y deja secar cada capa 6-8 horas antes de aplicar la siguiente.
What a great video! Thank you!

This video is so helpful. Getting ready to chalk paint for the first time. Can you recommend a color by Jolie Paints - I am looking for a light grayish blue color.
For a light greyish blue that would be French Blue. Super pretty! If you want more of a grey with a blue undertone then French Grey would be your color.
What if my cabinet doors are oak with faux wood insert?
Totally fine! The Jolie brand will adhere better than primer and it truly holds up using just the clear wax to seal it.

Great question! Just warm soapy water does a great job.
