Four of Cups - Tarot Card Deep Dive
Day 32 - Four of Cups
#dropm78 #tarotchallenge by @mindful.tarot
Definition:
This is the card of dissatisfaction. It’s about letting an opportunity pass you by. I also see it as introspection and contemplation. On a more personal level I may also read this as disappointment or even depression.
Detail:
The detail that caught my attention. Today is the crossed arms of the figure in the card. It’s a protective pose. He’s closed off, not willing or able to be open to new ideas, to seeing that this 4th cup is different.
Discovery:
When it comes to writing fiction, the first thing I thought about when I saw this card was a grumpy sunshine novel. This is a type of romance novel, where one of the characters is a grumpy person, and the other one is an eternal optimist. Another way to look at this is that your character is a pessimist.
he or she could also be an extreme introvert, or a bit of a recluse. Or how about a hurt character who is afraid to open up to the possibility of finding their happily ever after.
When fleshing out an outline or working on a new chapter, the four of cups could represent an opportunity or an easy way to fix the problem but our characters either don’t see it or they think it’s too good to be true.
I could also use this card as inspiration to create a benevolent side character who offers a helping hand.
Or how about having my characters take time to think through options before making a choice?
I could also see this as an opportunity to have my characters talk about past relationships and how that might affect their future together.

Hi Sam! I am also Sam. 😂 Nice to meet you! I really enjoyed this wonderful video -- it was exactly what I was looking for! You answered all the questions I had, and you provided insightful comments and interesting anecdotes. And your pacing was perfect -- not too fast, not too slow; just right. Thank you so much for sharing an excellent comparison of the two sizes. Much appreciated! 🎉💛
Hi Sam! Thanks so much for the feedback. Glad it was helpful!
Barbara walker tarot, very good choice. I just discovered a new tarot. Thank you for this review.
You’re very welcome
Thank you so much for picking up my VR!!! I like your choices, especially the Barbara Walker for the Grim Reaper, that deck is mean lol!
You’re very welcome. I had so much fun picking decks for this. It’s my first VR. I hope I did it justice. Still trying to figure this TH-cam thing out.
Its so interesting that you talked about the possibility of a promotion and a move for this character. That is exactly what is happening in my life right now. I just got promoted and will be moving across the country to run the corporate office for my company. I am reminded of how life opens up when we do the hard work, and even though I am sad to leave my home town, I am also counting my blessings and feeling the gift of prosperity and abundance that I am welcoming into my life. Great video!
Thank you for sharing that. Congratulations on the promotion and good luck with the move.
Hi Samantha. In the dark wood tarot, which is the deck I am using for this challenge, the figure in the card is the devil. He stands in front of twin girls. He gives one girl a few coins, while the other girl has to sign a contract in her own blood. It is a more eerie/negative image than in the traditional RWS card, but for me it’s perfect. It was married for 20 years to a man who refused to work. Even though I was the one worked 3 jobs, I no control of how we spent our money. Even today, 8 years after our divorce, he still calls and tries to manipulate me for money. ThankFully I am a more clear-minded and stronger woman now. Also, I love the idea of using Tarot to create fictional writing! Great video!
Interesting take. I’m going to go look for that card in my DW deck. It’s a deck I want to dig into and study more. I haven’t spent a lot of time with the guide book yet, but from what I’ve read, it’s definitely something worth digging into. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hi Samantha. I don’t suffer from depression, but I do suffer from internal negative talk. I can easily become consumed by my own negative thinking when something is not going my way. I also tend to ignore the answers or the help that might be right in front of me. Again being too consumed by my own suffering. But I love when you said that hardship can be a good thing. It forces us to go through the suffering/struggling that is needed for us to grow, push us out of our comfort zone, and develop a new perspective. Loving your video series on this tag!
Ha! I hear you on the ignoring the answers right in front of me. I always know I’m in trouble when the same tarot card keeps popping up in readings. Thanks so much for chiming in and letting me know you’re enjoying these videos. I was starting to feel like I’m talking into the void.
@@tarotforwriting I have been thinking about starting my own channel for the past two years, but I have not done it yet. Fear of “talking into the void“, fear of Imposter syndrome. Fear of not having anything of value to add to the conversation. Again, all the negative talk. I am slowly moving closer to becoming a content creator. When I see new channels like yours, it serves as inspiration for me. I love the community here. I’d love the opportunity to make some friends on tarottube. I’ll keep you posted.
Based on the comments you’ve shared, I d say you definitely have something of value to share and I would love to watch your channel. Count me in as your first subscriber 😀. Problem solved. When are you starting your channel?
Hi Samantha. I completely agree with what you said about the interpretation of this “miser card“. I think the definition of a miser is too limited in this context of the four of pentacles. It focuses on the hoarding of wealth which I do not necessarily agree with. It is necessary to use your resources wisely to care for yourself. And if that means saving money for a house or to help family members, so be it. Myself, I have the opposite problem. I am an overspender. I would benefit from being a little more miserly. Lol.
I definitely have times when I overspent too and there are definitely tarot decks that tempt me 😁
I share a lot of the same feelings when it comes to the traditional meaning of this card, and after listening to your video I went back and took another look at the figure in the Dark Wood, because the detail that stood out to me today was the softness in his expression. Through that invitation to softness, I started to consider the placement of the apple slices / pentacles, which Sasha Graham also outlines in the guidebook -- one atop his head, one in his hands held at his heart and two beneath his feet. This made me think about how important it is for us to be sufficiently resourced (mind, heart, hands (to build and make with) and feet (foundation)) in order to show up as the best version of ourselves for our lives and the lives of those we love -- just like Maslow's pyramid suggests. 👍
Love this. I’m going to grab my Dark Wood tarot to look at her version of this card. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hi Tanya. I am also using the dark wood tarot for this challenge. I like how you said “an invitation to softness”, and the need for us to be sufficiently resourced. I’m also struck by how the mandrake represents grounding and stability. It also can represent fortune and good luck. So like you and Samantha, my interpretation of this being “the miser card“ focuses less on the hoarding of wealth, and more on the necessity of spending where needed in order to take care of yourself. I’m going to continue watching Samantha‘s daily videos on this challenge, so I look forward to seeing your comments as well.
@@tarotforwriting My pleasure, Samantha! I was chatting with my husband about the card a little as well, and he came up with a phrase I think I’ll include in my my readings going forward -- seeing this card as an invitation to be “wise with our wealth”. (He knows I’m a sucker for alliteration. ☺)
@@megadele65 Those are excellent points about the mandrake, Megan! I love how the two sets of characteristics you mentioned really balance each other out - grounding & stability give me all those safe, earthy vibes, while fortune & good luck add a flutter of air (or maybe an unexpected wash of rain?) to the mix. (I’m super new to the elemental side of tarot, so I hope that makes sense. 😉) And hooray for another #dropm78 participant!!! I’m excited to see what other insights we'll share on this journey through the Dark Wood. 🌙😊
Hello Samantha! So happy to see a new content creator who does Tarot! I just subscribed to your new channel. I am also doing the #dropm78 so this is perfect! I am not a content creator but I have been thinking about starting my own channel for YEARS. So far, I'm loving this tag. I am relatively new to tarot so this is a great way for me to learn. Looking forward to following your channel!
Yay! Thanks so much for subscribing. I’m having a lot of fun with this and am gaining some awesome insights into the cards. It is definitely a great way to learn, and I love that we started with the minors, leaving the majors for last. Thanks for following along and feel free to chime in with your takes on the cards.
Today certainly felt like a hands full, rolling with the choppy waves, learning on fast-forward kind of day in my neck of the woods! 😆 Hope it was smoother sailing where you are. 😊
What a great idea for the Discovery prompt! I'm working with the Dark Wood Tarot, by Sasha Graham, and the depiction of the pentacle as a slice of an apple -- plus the detail of the pumpkins that I noticed -- are helping me to reframe the pentacles/coins as seeds. It keeps them in that earthly realm, but makes them a lot more approachable for me as someone who tends to struggle with this particular suit.
I adore the Dark Wood Tarot. Such a great deck and I learned a lot from the guidebook too. You’re right. It’s full of great details in each card to tap into. I’m glad it’s reframing the coins for you. What a great way to start this mindful tarot journey.
@@tarotforwriting Thank you, Samantha! This is my first time working with her, but these first few readings have already been so incredible that I'm wondering if I might have a new home deck on my hands. 💛 This challenge will definitely be a good way to find out! Excited for your Day 2 insights!
This is cool! I might try doing this too!
