Safir 7 Tent Review

Winter tents with wood burning stoves are becoming incresingly popular ways to get away during the pandemic but can they really cope in severe conditions? In this video I test out Tentipi's Safir 7 to see it it can stand up to a real winter in the Scottish Highlands.

What size are u wearing and what are your weight height?
Just finished your Hot Tent Diaries book John, enjoyed it very much! Funny as well I have to say. Perhaps I’m easily amused. Have also read your Bothy Tales book, also a great read, onto the others…Cheers 👍
Just came across your channel John! My mate has lent me his hot tent to try out. Your video was very useful cheers! ATB Cat
Great. Let me know how you get on.
Great tour, John. I've just started on your 'Hot Tent Diaries' so now have a better idea of what they look like and how they work.
Lol the fire got so hot it melted the tarp! 😆
O_o
More like, leave a little trace.
lmao
haha not what I was expecting!!! XD
John: "Dr., I can't pronounce y F's, or my TH's"....Dr: "Well Mr. Burns, you can't say fairer than that!"
I have the same tent & it always amazes me how quickly I can pitch & be undercover in less than 5 minutes. Installing the stove & any further adjustments can follow, but at least am out of the weather very quickly. My stove can run all night if need be. Thanks for posting.
How do you get the stove to run all night? Never managed that.
@@Zeroclimber Sorry for late reply. I use compressed peat briquettes & as a gentleman of a certain age, I expect to be up at least once during the night & add extra ones then. Peat smoulders slowly, for hours, then adding fresh wood on the morning, it revs up again. Unfortunately, the peat briquettes are quite heavy, but widely available. I'm using a cheap stove, but need to contact you regarding swapping to an eldfell for my Safir 7.
Hilltrek...
Comfy winter camping at last! Also, don't forget your local independent bookshops when purchasing your copy!!
Great little hot-tent adventure JB! I recently found 'Wild Winter' in Watermill bookshop, Aberfeldy; it's a thoroughly enjoyable mix of exploration, natural history, pictorial descriptions, outdoor bushcraft and wit! I'll be getting your other titles soon! How and how far do you transport the hot-tent to your camping desinations? Also, are bothies all reopen to the public now please? Roll-on another winter❄️ and more chilly tales!
Looks nice and cozy!

Great review! How is the jacket holding up?
Still great. Very durable. No real change from when I first got it.
I have my Brede 1 since 2011...almost like new 2022
This sounds very good.
This is the stupidest thing I've seen all week and I absolutely love it
Just switched from camper van to Safir 7! Enjoyed the video!
Glad you liked it. The tent is a different world
Love the books John, great reading. I hear Lord Purdey isn't so keen on them though. 😃
Thanks so glad you have enjoyed them. I doubt I'm his lordships favourite author.
Buy?korea!
Wonderful images John. Can't wait for my annual pilgrimage to Scotland. Skye this year 😃
Nice one John. Cannae beat it. 😎👌
Super tent👍 seen a few hot tent films but this one is epic 🙏🏼 wheeling the kit to the pitch 👍🙏🏼 enjoyed best wishes Simon 👍🙏🏼
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it hoping to get out again soon when the weather calms down a little.
@@Zeroclimber totally agree there roll on the longer nights best wishes Simon 👍
Great video. Would love to see the 1 year follow up :)
Thanks for a great review! Do you have any thoughts about what it would be like to use the jacket in the warmer seasons (not only winter)?
I'd see the jacket as primarily suitable for cooler weather. It might be too hot in warmer weather although I have used it in wet summer conditions and found the ventilation system works well to help you stay cool.
@@Zeroclimber Thanks a lot for your answer! :-)
Awesome set up do you mind if I ask do you think you could fit three cots in there and the stove? I do a lot of solo hunting but then I also take a long my brothers and the three of us have cots for sleeping. We also plan to utilize the stove so I’m worried the seven might take up too much room or may not have enough room we initially thought we’d get the nine but due to the size of the footprint it would be harder to pitch in hunting situations just wondering your two cents love the content thank you very much
I think you could set up three cots in there. It would be tight but it could be done. If you just set them up at night and took them down when you wanted to sit or cook. The other thing you could do is get a different stove to maximise space. Mine is quite long but you could probably use a small more compact stove.
Hi John, how is your Klattermusen Brede 2.0 jacket holding up? Would you recommend it and does it still hold its durability? I am in two minds between the Brede 2.0 and a Gore-tex pro. Any advice would be appreciated.
Sorry not to have got back to you quicker. In terms of durability I'd say the Brede 2 is as close to indestructible as a jacket can get. I normally get about 4 years out of a Paramo I expect to get at least 10 out of the Brede. At that rate it justifies the cost. I've never used a Gore-tex pro, so can't compare. I don't think you'll be disappointed by the Klattermusen.
@@Zeroclimber Thanks very much John your word means a lot. Klattermusen is a lot more sustainably produced than others, their team focuses massively on sustainable materials. To develop a jacket that is highly durable as well as being a blue design approved fabric. Is a massive achievement.
@@forwhoyou8651 That's a very important point. Durable clothing that is produced in a way that reduces its impact on the environment is the way to go.
Warning: This is what you HAVE to do if you own a Tentipi - just random camping for no other reason than that the weather is bad.
Very true. Camping in bad weather is good for the soul. I also live in the Highlands. if I waited for good weather I'd never go anywhere.
@@Zeroclimber Good point!
How do you dry your tent out before storing, ive just got the safir 9, cheers.
It's difficult to dry and you are very unlikely to get it down dry in Highlands in winter. I live in a flat so open it out in a spare bedroom. Takes about 3 days to dry.
@@Zeroclimber being from the westcoast of Scotland you don't get many dry day's in a row, probably put it over the banister in the house or try and fit it in the garage, just one more question, I've got the outbacker stove and my flue pipe will protrude 23 inches from the top of the tent, will this be enough clearance to allow sparks not to be a problem..
@@marleymac370 60cm is the most I've seen suggested by a stove manufacturer, make sure you have a mesh style spark arrester too. Poor quality or damp wood will give you sooty spots on the tent. Nikwax Tent & Gear Solar Wash is Recommended by Tentipi for cleaning.
@@Proadventure Do you know if there are any instruction videos on how to clean a tent?
@@Zeroclimber probably, but I just follow the instructions on the Nikwax products. Pete
Thanks John, I've had many Klättermusen gear and love it. Service team are great too. Came from Arcteryx usage to Klättermusen and it's the length of product life scan, repair and functional details. Gave up weight counting to long term field use and feel. Please give me a link to your book? Oh I now live in Sweden so.....
Hi Glen. I am pretty impressed with the jacket. Here's a link to some of my books. www.v-publishing.co.uk/books/bundles_3/bundles-3-john-d-burns-bundle/
Wow
fab wee video, thanks mate
Evening, any updates on the jacket at all?
Video up date on it's way.
Good stuff John, didnae ken you had à you tube channel.Have now subscribed (algorithim)👍
Thanks for subscribing. Hope you enjoy the videos.
It blends in well, I like to the functional trolley cart. The vents do look indeed to regulate the air flow and temp in these hot conditions, yet can appreciate that it will come into its own as a very cosy shelter during the shoulder months and into winter time. Cleggs, midges, ticks, nah thanks. Quite a portable 'bothy'.
It's even better in the winter when I can get the stove going and their are no clegs.
I thought the pine martin was insatiable?how did the martin know not to mess with badger?the kill and eat every thing else?
Pine martin are pretty voracious but the badger is much bigger and heavier. Not worth risking injury which might stop the marten from hunting.
Because badgers are related to martens except they are even more insatiable and much stronger
Badger never stop eating...
Thanks mate, I did enjoy the video.

Brothers from another mother
Can i just check if it was the 7 you were in. Just looking at that size for a family of four. What are your thoughts, it would be a weekend tent?
You would perhaps be a bit tight for a family of 4 if you are using the stove. I wouldn't want to have that stove burning with small children around. It gets very hot and there's a real danger of someone getting burnt. You might be better off with the Safir 9.
Just bought Wild Winter and really looking forward to reading it as I loved your other books.
Did you put some food in that cleft in the tree? Is that what attracted them? Good idea!
Yes, peanut butter, honey and eggs. James Roddie's hide.
Looking forwards to reading Wild Winter. Really enjoyed your first 2 books. Living in Devon, the highlands are alas as far away from me in the UK as they can be, although we are lucky to have Dartmoor, no bothies or heights but isolation and wild camping aplenty. Read bothy tales first and it really was excellent in evoking the spirit of why people enjoy spending simple nights together with a friend or alone being present and mindful watching a warming fire in the grate if youre lucky enough and you wanted to lug the fuel with you, telling tales and a bite to eat and a dram or two, taking us back to a simpler time throughout the ages when tales and friendship were shared in much the same way. Also Sky dance was an excellent introduction for me to highlight the problems that I was ignorant of, being the destruction of natural habitat in the Scottish highlands for the benefit a few and with so many rare species being collateral damage. Thanks John for both books.
Just seen this. So glad you enjoyed my books. Never been to Dartmoor. I'd really like to go there one day, maybe in my hot tent.
I enjoyed your other books John, ordered Wild Winter from Vertebrate a while ago, so its good to hear it will be out in April. Good luck with it.
Just seen your comment. Did you enjoy Wild Winter?
@@Zeroclimber Yes I did John, one of the main points I took from it is how denuded of wildlife our countryside is. Not only the Highlands but also when I think of the artificial construct that has become the Lake District with its acres of sheep ridden fells. Luckily we have people who without the backing of organisations quietly go about helping wildlife and the landscapes recover. More Glen Feshie less Loch Lomond national Park I say. Just rereading bothy tales at the moment and aching to get back into the hills once my imminent knee replacement let's me. Good luck with the next book
@@roughyed74 I really is sad that places like the Lakes are considered national parks when they really are desolate places.
