An early fall trip to Algonquin where I managed to beat the crowds and enjoy some beautiful fall colours and night skies. Miigwech, as always.

I love Pukaskwa! Absolutely magical country, I did the Coastal Trail last time and can't wait to get back with a canoe so my knees can get their VENGEANCE for all that up and down on the trail lol
The little bits of the trail that I walked were intense so I can imagine how hard that must have been. Beautiful, but RUGGED country!
are you on a sea? If not, then those are Gulls -
Riiiight. Thanks for that insight
I saw this back when you first uploaded it and went searching for it again. For the second (or third) time, I'm still floored watching you drag through that chest deep mud. Especially solo... and while a thunderstorm is rolling in no less. Can just imagine your state of mind at that moment! Great video and epic trip. Cheers
Thank you, I just wish I'd had the thought to change the camera batteries and capture the full extraction! But the mud is something I never hope to repeat, haha. Fool me once...
Great review
Thank you
What an epic trip - u was taking notes as end of May 2025 I’m going from gamble to Florence - south and north lady Evelyn down to Diamond to Wakimika and finish at emerald lake +- 155 km and +15 km portages. This trip was motivation to keep planning and staying in shape… I swear last time I did lady Evelyn portages I said never again… but that never lasts😂. The mud smog was insane!!!! Thanks for sharing this incredible adventure 💪🏽
So glad you got something out of it! Yes, those Lady Evelyn portages can be brutal but that's going to be an incredible trip taking you basically through the best of Temagami. Jealous!
@@WindWaterandPine I may bail out at Sandy inlet but that’s only if I spend more days in Florence and lady Evelyn. Somewhat worries about taking the Swift and considered a more durable canoe for rapids and rocks. Yours seemed to hold up through some good knocks though!! Any insights? :)
@@NotSoEpicAdventurer I find it really helps if you just don't care about bashing the hell out of your canoe :)
@@WindWaterandPine good advice :)
I did my latest trip ever on that last heatwave...October heatwave. Really nice being in there late but those leaves everywhere comes at a cost...I went down too, into a hole filled with leaves and lucky I didn't do some damage solo. No one around then in Algonquin and no phone reception at that spot. Incredible being in there that late though!!
When you get that sweet weather window so late in the season it's really special, isn't it?
We were in Algonquin (off Kiosk lake) that same week! What awesome weather other than that one evening that rained and got windy. We got some great footage you can check out on my channel for ideas for your next trip if you haven't been to that area!!! Great video, and... until next year!!
I've been up there and it's a great place to access from since it's a lot quieter. It was a nice week to be up, glad you were there too!
Nicely shot video, keep it up!
Thank you, good sir. Trying to keep improving here
Really top level image quality in this one, I love it. I have no idea what you're talking about but you might enjoy reading Alan Watts The Way of Zen while in the woods.
I barely have any idea what I'm talking about either most of the time, haha. Thanks for the recommend!
Excellent! Loved this one. Great editing!
Thanks, Todd! We try to improve one video at a time here!
What a lovely and beautiful Video, reminds me I should come here more often and watch your videos. Thank you for sharing!
Feel free to stop by any time :)
Grateful for your channel more than ever. So mesmerizing and peaceful
Thank you, I'm really happy you're getting something out of it
That fall looked painful. I did the same on wet rock one time on the Larder River. I went one way and my canoe went the other. I was more worried about the canoe even though I was slightly hurt and bruised. But it wasn't serious and makes for good stories so that's all that matters. Like you said; happens to the best of us. And I agree, solo trips you definitely have a lot of time to think about stuff although one reason I enjoy solo trips is to forget about the worries of the world. Nature therapy is the best.
You said it, Darren. And stuff like that happens all the time, I just rarely capture it on camera, haha. It's nice to get out there and forget about it all, that's for sure 👍
What an amazing short jaunt - quite envious! P.S. Prospector 15?
It was a lot of fun... and it's a prospector 16 tandem canoe that I just use for soloing.
Oh no, not another film about a guy paddling Temagami in a canoe.... that i HAVE to watch and then go binge watch all his other films and subscribe and stuff! ... .because I'm addicted to these kind of journeys and adventures. Damn.... when am i supposed to get any work done?? Seriously though, great film, great adventure in this beautiful landscape. And RESPECT to you and all who do this, its amazing, often gruelling, always something new to learn. Oh...and the mud!... jeeeeez! Best wishes to you from me in 🇬🇧. 🛶
Ha! I'm sorry about your addiction but I don't know how to help you. Thanks for tuning in from across the Atlantic ✌️
@WindWaterandPine 😁 just keep doing what you do, it inspires others , like me, to get off our a****s and get out there too. Some addictions are not so bad 😊 thank you.
Can't wait to do this, hoping next year. That Rollway section was crazy, we thought for sure you were going to dump after taking in so much water but you made it all the way. The Natch looks stunning!
Rollway is a meaty rapid and I don't know what kind of luck we had on our side making it down there but it was pretty memorable to say the least! The Petawawa is gorgeous and the Natch is a real highlight. Recommend it!
Loved the route choice. We wanted to check out some of these lakes including Florence which weve heard so much about so it was so nice getting a sneak peak. That mud was insane, we seriously thought it was going to swallow you entirely!
So there's a lot of ways to get into Florence Lake that don't involve that muddy one, haha. It is so worth the work to get in there though. Thanks so much for watching.
For that nightmare marshy bit, wouldn't it have been possible to tie a thinnish long rope to the canoe then crawled over the mud unhindered until you got to firm ground and could pull the canoe out?
That's essentially exactly what I ended up doing in the end, which wasn't without its complications because the rope was so stretchy and the mud so soft, but yes, that's eventually how I got to solid ground and pulled the canoe across 👍
Loved the adventure, thanks so much for sharing. We did this route a couple years ago but weren't up to running those rapids and skipped most of them. We really want to go back though and try more of them next time, loved watching you run them. Quick question, how did your gel coat canoe fare? We also have a gel coat canoe, Nova Craft Tuff Stuff. Just wondering if you had to do a ton of repairs after? Anything major?
So my canoe I bought well used and it's had some issues with the gel coat cracking constantly (probably due to UV and that it was originally a rental boat) so yes, I had to do some repairs but that's because it chips really easily on my particular boat. Also, it's a Swift and I imagine the Tuff Stuff material of the NC would be a little more suited to whitewater, although some of the rapids were bigger than I expected for August! Really depends on how kind you are to your boat, haha.
I'm a novice. Don't know how you made that decision to get into that mud. I wouldn't have thought it possible. I would have gone to shore somehow and hiked somehow. Still think it was the only way? Also wonder why no long rope attached to bow to pull it.. not a good idea there?
At that point there wasn't much way to make it to shore or I wouldn't have gone through the mud! I did have a long rope which I eventually ended up using (camera died so I don't think I captured my full extraction) although there were all kinds of problems with that too... all in all an experience I never hope to repeat.
Hey Chris! Met you on the portage at Pickerel Bay Sept 5th we helped each other carry our equipment. Thanks again! Just realized I watched this video before I left for my trip and didn’t recognize you on the trail, lol! Amazing trip in this video, you are a beast! Great meeting you!
That's hilarious, man! It was awesome running into you too. See you back in Temagami soon, I hope.
It was great to see another view of Temagami through your lens and the beautiful solitude there. I love the droan shots. Thanks for all the hard work filming this and taking us along to see more of this amazing park. Really appreciate this backcountry especially while currently stuck in the urban landscape of southeast Michigan.
I understand the urban blues all too well. Thanks so much for watching
another cracking trip thanks for the upload love the green shade of the tent what make is it brilliant as usual hats off classssssssssss
Thanks mate!
Ya know, when I looked at a map of Quebec and saw all these massive parks, I wondered why I never saw any of the Ontario guys or even Quebec guys do videos of them....again you are thinking. love your develop shots of the storm building on day 2..well thought out. love that evening on day 5 and the pike jumping :)
Thanks for the kind feedback, and yes, it is a big region up there!
Another great trip my friend 😊. Thanks for bringing us along - my favourite was the footage of the birds of prey.
Thank you. For once they stood still and let me capture them :)
I called it! I almost went there last week! But it was gonna cost me $800+ with fishing right of access, license, campsite fees, gas from Nova Scotia, etc. Another time! Gotta make a longer road trip out of it to justify the cost.
Yeah, the fishing fees are pretty ridiculous and I'd be shocked if all the people pulling in with their little tin boats are paying any of it. It's a nice place though! Thanks for watching.
I have a trip planned at La Vérendrye next year! It gives me a better idea of what to expect! Seems like a pretty nice place! Great video!
Glad it was helpful for you!
With that head wrap on I was getting vibes of Mike Reno! Lol you gotta be older gen x to get that one….he was Canadian though!
I'm early millennial so I may have to look that one up...

Very cool. I still have Wolf Lake on my bucket list. Maybe even the Sturgeon River. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Darren! I would definitely recommend checking out both those places :)
What an incredible way to pass an hour, watching this - wow. Thank you so much for posting this on youtube so others can benefit from your labor of love. Your dedication and appreciation for where you're at and what you're able to do is evident in your film making skills and storytelling abilities. The views and subs should be at least a million times what they are, wth. Keep on keeping on, you rock!
I'm very happy you enjoyed it so much, it's fun to be out there filming in a place that inspires you. Thanks for the kind words 🙏
Absolutely love the big bag of spaghetti! What a wonderful trip. Temagami is on my very long bucket list. :) The water in some areas is brownish from tannin in the water. It is produced from run off that is draining into the water from decaying vegetation or peaty soil. :) I am in Nova Scotia and we have a lot of rivers and lakes that contain tannin. Gratefulness for wild places, it is nice to know there are others that feel that way. :) Nothing like an after trip poutine, yum! Thanks for sharing your adventure. :) :)
Thanks for watching. Now if only those tannins made the Sturgeon water taste like wine...
@@WindWaterandPine hahahaha! Would have helped on those long portages! :)
Good stuff man, really enjoy all of your videos. Thanks for taking us on the ride!
My pleasure, thanks for the support.
Great filming and storytelling! I’m looking forward to exploring this part of the province myself. Cheers.
Thanks for the kind words, and yes, I encourage you to get out there!

My pleasure. Hopefully some more coming down the pipe soon.
Just fantastic ! Very well done my friend. Your canoe tripping videos are an inspiration for sure ! Peace ✌️
Thank you so much! Positive responses like these keep me inspired to make them. Really appreciate the support.
I enjoyed your video until you started talking about mining. Mining started in that area over 120 years ago during the building of the railway when Fred La Rose threw his hammer at a fox and missed exposing silver at the town of Cobalt. Northern Ontario has thrived on mining ever since.
You make mining sound so noble, but it isn't so black and white. The industry has done good for the economy and done lasting harm to the land which cannot be ignored. The value of minerals must be weighed against the value of fish and game, recreation, and environmental productivity over thousands of years.
I'm aware that mining has a long history in Northern Ontario and has been a valuable source of income for many people but it's environmental impact cannot be denied. I'm not saying there should be no mining done ever, but I'm very grateful that truly special areas like Wolf Lake and the surrounding Temagami country have had people willing to stand up to those forces of industry and demand they be protected.
Lovely trip, so peaceful 😊. Looks like your weather was spectacular. Thank you for capturing this and sharing.
And thanks for watching. Other than the first day couldn't have really asked for better weather.
A meditative journey through just a gorgeous part of the world with a knowledgeable and endearing guide. Top notch imagery, truly!
Glad you enjoyed it, mate! It was an excellent trip.
P.P.S. What put-in did you use? I've been trying to find your route on the planning map and cannot find it!
Matamagasi Lake has a public launch at the end of the lake road and that's where I put in.
@@WindWaterandPine Thanks!
Just got back from Chiniguchi Lake trip yesterday. Fantastic area!!
Very underrated area, isn't it? Glad you enjoyed it.
P.S. SO envious! Temagami is stunning - like Algonquin or St. Regis on steroids!
It's a really special place, eh.
Problem with burning socks is that they nearly always have plastics or elastics of some type - but how gross that they were left in such a beautiful place...
Yeah, I definitely don't like burning non organic things but also don't want to carry out ten pounds of other people's nasty stinking socks...

Don't avoid any of it (except the mud on Skooztagan, haha), it's all beautiful! I love Florence Lake myself if you can get out that far.

A fine canoeing adventure and video. Well done and look forward to watching the second half of the trip.
Thanks for checking it out, it was a special trip :)
That mud crawl was epic!
Epic and one I don't hope to repeat anytime soon :)
It would be a lot more fun to watch what's in front of you when running rapids, to see what you see... but that's just my opinion.
