My dad was a fighter pilot and then a bush pilot this tradition among pilots keeps them alive. Quite frankly the ones that made excuses didn’t survive. I love the camera angle during the rapids and how you told yourself to slow down for the big drops, after all, you’re driving a vehicle with no breaks. I was a bit surprised no painter lines on the canoe. I’ve always tied the canoe right after I land for the night. Thanks for sharing your adventure. As canoeists we all would have a longer winter without it.

I honestly was having so much trouble finding info about what the sets would be like in late August, and figured I probably wouldn't be able to run much of anything, and was very wrong! Also, those little canyons made some of the scouting really tough, and I felt like an idiot for not packing my helmet. So all sound advice you have here. Your channel was one of the first I discovered when I was just getting into canoe tripping and your Superior trip blew me away and inspired me for years until this past summer when I finally made the dream come true and did it myself. The Magnetawan river is my hometown river. Born & raised in the the village of the Mag. Paddled this river many many times in all water levels and so I'm a little biased towards it. I enjoy seeing others paddle it and the area and get their take on the experience. My losing a canoe story was at the beginning of a portage around a rapid. Unloaded for the portage, got distracted by the fact I had to pee like a race horse and well...turned and saw my canoe start drifting towards the rapids. So literally got caught with my **** in my hand. Ran, dove in and caught the canoe luckily but ya. Complete rookie, stupid move. Now I over compensate and pull the canoe well out of the water. Had nightmares about it for weeks LOL! So I know the feeling you had there. Great trip! Great video! All the best and safe tripping always! Cheers, Chris
Haha, great story! And yeah, as long as you manage to come out in one piece and learn a valuable lesson it's all right in the end. The only way you really learn is through the mistakes you make, in my opinion, and when you're tired or trying to save time it's easy to let your guard down for a minute and sometimes put yourself in a tricky spot! Great video! Cool to see what it takes to maneuver the rapids. I’ve been backpacking and camping most weekends for months but I’m becoming obsessed with canoe camping videos. Plan to rent a canoe on a lake for the first time this summer to see if I like it.
You'll love it! Of course, running rapids is very different from flatwater paddling on calm lakes (flatwater you can kind of learn on your own, whitewater it's good if someone teaches you!) but it's a great way to get out and enjoy nature.
It's very important to wear a helmet in whitewater and I forgot to bring mine that trip. And to be honest, I thought the rapids were going to be a lot smaller, possibly not runnable. Won't forget it next time.

Funny you should say those potatoes with oil are so good after a day of hard work because as a runner, I just learned the other day that potatoes with salt and oil (aka potato chips) are one of the best ways to replace electrolytes and calories post/during run on a daily budget. Maybe the term "couch potato" is just portraying a big common misconception 😂
You're not far off the mark. My family friend just ran the Toronto Waterfront marathon and was eating potato chips as soon as she finished so it's not just that they taste good!
I grew up in Ontario canoe country, but never got the chance to actually go on a canoe trip. So, I take trips vicariously through videos like this one. I really enjoyed watching it! Glad your mishap with the canoe floating away turned into a non-event. That is one mistake that I would safely bet on you never making again!
It makes me really happy to hear that. Being able to take people on the journey and share in some beautiful nature when they might not otherwise be able to was one of my main motivations for starting this channel. And yes, the canoe float was a dumb mistake that didn't end up being too costly, and that's how you learn out there.

We really want to go back though and try more of them next time, loved watching you run them. Quick question, how did your gel coat canoe fare? We also have a gel coat canoe, Nova Craft Tuff Stuff. Just wondering if you had to do a ton of repairs after? Anything major?
So my canoe I bought well used and it's had some issues with the gel coat cracking constantly (probably due to UV and that it was originally a rental boat) so yes, I had to do some repairs but that's because it chips really easily on my particular boat. Also, it's a Swift and I imagine the Tuff Stuff material of the NC would be a little more suited to whitewater, although some of the rapids were bigger than I expected for August! Really depends on how kind you are to your boat, haha.

I actually brought a small rod but I forgot my tackle box in the car 🤦♂️ The whitewater was challenging if for no other reason than the way the river narrows into those high walled canyons that make scouting and portaging individual drops difficult. I couldn't believe how few paddlers I saw.

You had me on the edge of my seat a couple times when you were hitting the rapids but you came through unscathed! lol Glad you showed your float away canoe. Very cool ! I’m just curious, I noticed the skid strips on the bow and stern of your Swift, I have a Placidboatworks Rapidfire and have considered adding some, may I ask where you got them from ? And did you apply them you’re self ? Thanks man !
I did not add them myself. Bought the canoe used and they came with it. Swift has them for sale, but I imagine most paddling shops would have them or be able to get them for you.
You don't seem to have a lot of out-door experience. Not tying up a canoe is not very smart. I don't see a line/rope on the canoe either for a quick retrieve or tie up. You wouldn't last long in a sailboat.
I have my share of experience when it comes to general canoe tripping, and I do have a throw rope clipped to the bow or stern that I usually tie the boat up with, but as I explained in the video, it was a bit of careless oversight due to fatigue at the end of a day. As for sailing, I don't think I have the sea legs anyways!

It would be a lot more fun to watch what's in front of you when running rapids, to see what you see... but that's just my opinion.
