The way Risk Calculates Rankings in caps is the person with more troops at the end gets the higher placement. If you'd moved your 40 troops off cap that last turn, when black took your cap, you'd have 40 troops to purple's 6, and have second anyway.

Your biggest mistake that dragged the match out was hitting down into purple when you didnt need to- you should have hit red, secured russia, and had red/black bots as buffers between you and purple until you grew to an overwhelming size
