My neighbours just moved to South America when they 1st moved in they said they were musicians & they were amazing. We live 1up in a tenement the day I heard her kick drum from the shop downstairs I was SHOCKED 😖🤣🤣🌻💙💜💙
Awesome work - i wonder how this portrian would look in black and white ?
Fairly sure that’s from a book called Kafka on the shore, not a quote by frank kafka. It’s not a very Kafka quote tbh lol
This is WONDERFUL Nick! I’m so happy your stories have finally been recorded for all to witness and it was lovely to hear them all again. Bought back happy memories. I’ve said it many times before but you taught me everything and seeing this I’m so proud to have had you as my teacher. Thank you Nick. And by the way, I get you! 😉 Xxx
That's beautiful, well done Sir 😍
Beautiful
Love this, quite inspirational.
Well said. I feel the same way. Interesting people make for wonderful subjects. Many of our most famous actors are not the most attractive but create an emotion in us that is meaningful.
I've got a Bears single, blimey, I never thought I'd see them referenced in a documentary, mind you it is about one of their members. 😂
Nick is a Giant that gave so many musicians a medium to show us how they want to be seen. He has the true eye of a (punk) poet. This is GOLD❤
Thank you so so very much indeed! 🥰
Muy Bueno amigo Un abrazo
Absolutely fantastic and masterful👍🎼🍻
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for this great and in depth Interview with this great musician, who influenced my youth tremendously.
Stochholm last night was spectacular❤🎶🇸🇪
My favorite girl from Bananarama. She had the best and natural dance skills of the group.
Love this guy's psychic view of the topic! Fantastic!
Brian Griffin was an iconic photographer. He was right to do it his way.
oh yeh that guy shitting paint eggs on to a canvas is insanely hard work! fucking idiots...
I love listening to Anne talking about her process, I've learnt so much.
YESSSSSSSS!!! 😊🎉
Wow !!!! Ordinary world amazing video !!!! Thank You
Absolutely wonderful interview. Very thought-provoking and inspirational to me.
Exceptionally guiding thoughts. Thank you
Great Short Film and Performance Piece.
Absolutely loved seeing your journey. It's fascinating to see how you were there by chance at the apex of two cultural movements of young, urban youth either side of the Atlantic. My favourite works by you are probably the Ordinary World and Come Undone covers because of the use of masking tape, the plastic punched lettering and how energetic they looked. Listening to the way you worked and how you were using different techniques is inspiring. It reminded me of my days at art college when I started to experiment and try new mediums and approaches. The freedom of creativity and how to just try different things is definitely there in your work. Another favourite video you did was for INXS, and wasn't really released because of Michael's passing, is "Searching", just because it was capturing the vibe of the music with the colours and visuals. Great documentary hopefully it will be seen by not just fans of the groups but budding artists and directors who will be influenced by you.
Interesting video, if you’l excuse the pun.
Totally fantastic film about an unbelievably talented creative artist who helped shape how music is perceived and presented from the late 70s to this day. This film needs to be on BBC Four and all arts channels now!
and Oasis?
🙌
Very nice
Thank you Nick for your vision and hard work! It obviously paid off! Your journey has allowed you to meet other people who are visionaries also. Ordinary World will always be one of my personal top ten favorite song and video. We all knew your work but it didn't get to know you until now.
Un docufilm magistralmente diretto! Bellissimo e interessante 👏Grande Nick... La creatività salverà il mondo 😉
I love ur work NICK! A hard die Duranie here (and love ur work with DEEE LITE & Malcom Mc Laren and Duran Duran of course). So pleased to know all about the Ordinary World, behind and process video. ITS A HUGE HIGHLIGHT!
The eyes look a little odd, unrefined almost … apart from that is good work. But someone once said ‘The eyes are the widows of the soul’ …
What music is this?? It’s haunting.
Is not music is just a drone pad from an electronic syntetiser keyboard.
@@DOGMA85 cheers 👍
I think nothing exposes 'ones' vulnerability as much as being a portrait artist. You are courageous and I have nothing but respect for portrait artists. I am happy to be painting by myself.
'Technique' was a dirty word during my 80s art and design education. 😢
I surveyed the building in 1979 for Kensington & Chelsea who were taking responsibility for the building. At that time no tenants had a good word for where they lived and the problems with the refuse shoot, lift services & centralised hear & hot water system? I asked why there was a corrugated iron roof over the play area at the base of the Tower. The response shocked me. It was to stop residents above throwing bricks & objects onto the children below! I hope this has all changed with time?
Aisha, My apologies.........Kitten Kuroi. I am sooooo damned proud of you! Yazzzzz!!!!! For what it's worth, watching this video (all 3 lil' dayum times) brought tears to my eyes. Ahhh. It truly warms my heart to know that my 1998 New Hope church sangin', choir partner dun' up and made it big but still somehow managed to remain true to herself. Youuuuu go girl!!!! (Martin Lawrence voice.....) I've always believed that you were blessed with the voice of an absolute angel and with that into consideration, it's nostalgically surreal to view that very same ......well-spoken, meticulously crafted voice of yours take you to the stratosphere. Collect your flowers, baby girl. Mah Belle would be proud, haha, and if I leave you with anything at all, just know that your brotha Kent’ae is sitting here smiling from ear-2-ear. Keep on keeping on, sis- and continue to allow His light to shine through you by way of your God given gift and well-spoken humility. Wishing you nothing but blessings and continued prosperity. 🙏 🥂 K. Van London ✨️
Those pictures don't look like film stills, or are they? I'm not sure what exactly he's talking about.
Those are long exposure pictures of films. All the frames of the films are melted together in one image.

beautiful interview and editing. And really inspiring Jason as an artist.
Thank you.
The best part for me was "Maybe a 'great picture' is not the goal." You inspired me to re-evaluate what my goal is when taking pictures. Thank you so much for that inspiration. Your deep and intelligent thoughts go far beyond what you normally find in TH-cam.
Jason must not have searched very hard because Hiroshi Sugimoto did this in 1978. "In 1978, Sugimoto's Theatres series involved photographing old American movie palaces and drive-ins with a folding 4x5 camera and tripod, opening his camera shutter and exposing the film for the duration of the entire feature-length movie, the film projector providing the sole lighting." I realize the end results are very different, but he literally did the same exact thing.
Very interesting. But as you said the result is really different. Also the intention and concept is totally different.
@@DOGMA85 He talks about Sugimoto in an interview with Dominc Jaeckle of Hotel magazine - the interview is on Jason's website - here's the relevant bit: People often compare my process to Hiroshi Sugimoto’s photographs - his cinema halls. Sugimoto would open his shutter for the duration of the film, and the result would bleach out the screen and illuminate the auditorium. He wasn’t trying to make the same point as me. But even if he had tried, he wouldn’t have been able to achieve the same ends back then. The reason is that light, when shone through a lens onto a screen produces a hot spot in the middle that then darkens and vignettes as it approaches the edge of the frame. The key difference nowadays is that I photograph the films on a practically pixel-free monitor so the edges are almost as illuminated as the central area. Now, this still results in a slight vignette - which exists because when the film was shot the same lens rule applied when the light entered the movie camera. If I had projected the films and photographed them it would have been impossible to capture all of the tonal disparities in a single exposure. If it weren’t for massive 5K monitors and their even splay of light these pictures simply wouldn’t be possible.
I like how he followed his own curiosity and that he's so passionate about this project.
“Undeniable” nonsense! Totally absurd. Face of Jesus my ass.
I love his work. I've got 2 of his 'art prints' of the Photographs of Films - Tarkovsky's Mirror, my favourite film - the photograph is smouldering and melancholic, totally captures the film's gestalt - and Alice in Wonderland, which drips with stunning acid trip colours - again, very Alice. Great to learn from your film how he found his way to this.
How much does a portrait cost?
You didn't realise you couldn't see it when you were inside it only after you moved into it? Didn't you do a viewing first?
Thanks for a fantastic interview
