    One major point was that Germany did not realise how close the R.A.F. were to collapse when Goering switched tactics from attacking the airfields to attacking English Cities and infrastructure. The cessation of attacks on the airfields allowed for them to be repaired in double quick time and operational again. If the attacks on the airfields had continued there could have been a very different outcome leading to an invasion of Britain.

    • @CowboysVintageWings
      @CowboysVintageWings 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@heartofoak45 Thanks for your insight. I agree with your position. What you are describing is a pivotal shift from Tactical operations to Strategic execution. What is interesting is the shift was accidental and not deliberate to planning. One Heinkel 111 Bomber crew made a navigational error that put them off course. Due to the strict British blackout posture, the crew aborted the target and dropped their bombs not realizing that they were overflying London. London as a city was forbidden on their Rules of Engagement The next Day Britain responded by going after Berlin. Once Berlin was hit, made the German High Command seem vulnerable in front of their people. Therefore, they shifted their strategy to go Eye for an Eye, and spared the RAF and galvanized the British people into an all out War.

    • @heartofoak45
      @heartofoak45 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CowboysVintageWings Yes, I appreciate the 'accidental' nature of the switch. I think it is covered in the film 'Battle of Britain' where the two Luftwaffe Officers are summoned back to a 'floodlit' Berlin for a dressing down only to be interrupted by the first air raid on the city. Churchill didn't waste any time on hitting back. So started the process of Germany 'Reeping the Worldwind' In the words of later Air Marshal Sir Arthur Harris.

    • @CowboysVintageWings
      @CowboysVintageWings 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@heartofoak45 Yes I love that particular scene. Before the aircrew was reprimanded in Berlin , the change in nature of the war had caught with them. The film did not show It directly but implies that the change so much that made the reprimand irrelevant. You see it on the Speech and on Goering’s good mood the next visit to his commanders. Imagine getting a court martial for doing something the whole Air Force is Doing the very next day. The fragility of war when the leadership jumps on the Hype train. I assure you those guys were quietly sent to their aircraft with nothing but a stern talk. In reality the event was much bigger than one single bomber crew. And the one crew represented on the movie is symbolic.

A large number of them end up serving overseas with military contractors abroad and some were used to support military training functions due to its low cost of operations. • @HootOwl513
      @HootOwl513 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CowboysVintageWings ''Washing Machine Charlie'' is a historical reference to the Guadalcanal campaign in 1942. The Japanese flew slow and often deliberately mis-timed aircraft, at night, over the dug-in Marines -- often dropping grenades or randomly strafing -- to disrupt sleep. The Sherrif's ''Mixmaster'' was always flown at night, orbiting the metropolitan area and suburbs in a racetrack or figure 8 pattern. Sorties were around 0200 - 0400. The 337's powerplant configuration creates a unique audio signature, because the aft prop chews into disturbed air from the forward propwash. For that reason I called them Washing Machine Charlie missions. The slang term for the 337/0-2 that I recall was Mixmaster.

      @@SteveBull-tg8mi Thanks for your comment. Your brother Charles was right on point. The Skymaster had a very limited cockpit real estate. It was originally designed for civilian use, as the Cessna 337 and then later adapted to military use. This resulted in the cramping of many instruments for navigation, military radios, and even weapons systems packed on top of each other, all ergonomically collocated in a smaller space.
