#35 Harlean Khien was my auntie. What a hero! ❤❤❤
CAN SOMEONE POST THE LINEUPS FOR THE TWO TEAMS HERE. THANKS
KEN PRINCE CAN YOU DO THE TEAM LINUPS FOR THESE GAMES.
ROBERT MITCHELL SHE MUST BE 100 YEARS OLD TODAY. I DID NOT KNOW SHE HAD BEEN AROUND BACK THEN.
NO SECURITY ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TRACK BACK THEN.AMAZING.
DID JAN STEVENS BECOME JAN VALLOW ?
YOU COULD ALWAYS TELL ANN CAVELLO EVEN BACK THEN BY THE WAY SHE MOVES HER ARMS. I WONDER IF ANN EVER SAW THIS BEFORE SHE PASSED AWAY. I KNOW SHE WOULD HAVE LOVED SEEING THIS.
WALT HARRIS AND ELMER ANDERSON. YOU CAN HEAR HOW MUCH WALT HARRIS WAS MADE TO ANNOUNCE ROLLER DERBY. ELMER WAS THE EASTERN WARRIORS ANNOUNCER HERE IN THE DELAWARE VALLEY SOUTH JERSEY, PHILA. OUR BUILDING WAS THE CHERRY HILL ARENA IN HADDONFIELD N.J. AND WAS THE FIRST BUILDING THE EASTERN WARRIORS SKATED IN HERE WHEN THEY MOVED HERE FROM HAWAII. PAT IF YOU CAN FIND THE INTERLEAGUE GAME BETWEEN THE NORTHERN HAWKS AGAINST THE NEW YORK CHIEFS PLEASE POST IT UP HERE. IVE SEARCHED FOR IT FOR YEARS SINCE I KNEW JOHN PARKER AND BETTY BROWN.
I remember this. I was stationed here from 1987 to 1990. It was on the baseball field next to the enlisted club.
Every thing about this is just plain weird.
What year was this
This was a training game in preparation for the wsl league
Should be colorized. Young skaters don’t like roller games or ‘73 and beyond Derby. They might relate to this.
What year was this?
HAS TO BE LIKE 59 OR 62
Such a fascinating ,addictive sport of a bygone era. I remember watching as a kid in the late 1960s and 1970s . I'm wondering when helmets started being in use because I know in the early 1950s they were not
Amazing to see this how far back 1959 that was the same year I was born. Thank you for sharing this video. 👍🇺🇸🙏🏼
wow a much faster and more athletic game with lower scoring and less theatrics and some fine skating....ah the good old days
Ok....Ann Cavallo skated for SF ....i learn new things 65 yrs later.....i always thought she was on all the other teams✌️🖖😺😽
AND SHE DATED CHARLIE O'CONNELL WHAT A MIXED UP PAIR THAT WAS.
I hear that when they broke up she sabotaged the game and the Bombers lost...he married Judy McGuire....Mike's ex wife✌️✌️
The skaters today skate alot slower....THIS is what is still should b....hvnt seen any new games....but w u tube i hv my sunday 5pm games✌️🖖😺😽.. this is my choice for this week✌️🖖😺😽
THE SKATERS ARE ALL WOMEN NOW ON A FLAT SURFACE ITS A PIECE OF CRAP . THE GIRLS PAY TO SKATE.
I was only 5-6 yrs old....i kinda remember the games in the 50s....my memory is of the 60-70s ✌️✌️✌️🖖🖖😺😽
That time is no fights, no actions hurting each teams... Just a game..they all play the game...❤
Me and my grandma.....this is the earliest memory of RD...us watching TV sun or sat reruns....this and WWWF ✌️🖖😺😽✌️🖖
This is Roller Derby at its best! Plenty of action, penalties called, no fights, and not a hint of fakery! If only something like this could reappear today. There are plenty of amateur roller derby leagues out there (and around the world!), and I would imagine that with investors and ample training of the best of these skaters, a viable ROLLER DERBY league could be formed. There would certainly be some cable network out there that would pick something like this up. Well, I can dream, at least!
Terrible call by the refs at 7:06!
This is really great it's wonderful to hear Walt Harris again what year is this game?
roberta mitchell, jan vallow, judy mcguire, judy sowinski, mike gammon, charlie o'connell, - all so young.
I like Judy sowinski so much.. and Joanne Weston a lot..
MIKE GAMMON WAS THE SEXIEST GUY SKATING AT THE TIME AND HIS 9 INCHES MIGHT HAVE CREATED THAT TITLE..
Tragically, Roller Derby died a slow and painful death.
It must have been during the Era of Disco. Because you look at those satin clothes the Slammers had on and hear the Music of the " Star Wars " Movie, that was the Era of Disco.
Joan Lynn Highland, " The Only Female Official." Must be Irish. I almost Married an Irish Woman.
They have a Woman Reff out there. Which is mighty unusual. Especially for the 70's if indeed that is when this happened. A true rarity.
I never saw this before in my life. I notice they have the old uniforms on. I remember seeing " Bill Groll " skate in person in Chicago at the UIC Pavillion.
This is sad
Now this was real roller derby! Look at how many people were in the audience! Today’s roller derby is dumb. I don’t know why they changed it. They’d have a lot more people in attendance today if they went back to the way it was originally.
CANT DO THAT THE REAL ROLLERS DERBY STARS YOUR WATCHING RIGHT NOW AND THERE GONE. AND TICKET PRICES WERE 2 AND 3 DOLLARS
Wow, the memories here. I was so young & loved roller derby. Charlie O'Connell looks like a kid
CHARLIE WAS NOT REAL NICE TO FANS SO HES A PIECE OF SHIT IN MY EYES.
If anyone would ever ask me how I would like to see Roller Derby return today, I would show them this video! This was Derby at its BEST! Not a fight to be seen, and pure ACTION on the track! I even caught a glimpse of good sportsmanship when AnnCavello patted an opponent on her shoulder after scoring a point on her! Oh, I can dream, at least!
OFF THE TRACK YOU COULD NOT FIND A NICER PERSON THAN ANN CAVELLO.
Thank you for sharing this Ken! This old footage was a lot better than later ones from the 60s and 70s!!
TRUE BUT THE 70'S CHIEFS WERE A GREAT TEAM. AT ONE POINT O'CONNELL WAS THE COACH THERE. ROBERTA MITCHELL WOULD GO ON TO THE ROLLER GAMES AS CAPTAIN OF THE BALTIMORE CATS.
This was the 1959 Championship Playoffs Semifinals, while the Chicago Westerners (who would defeat SF for the title in the Championship Final) would defeat the LA Braves in the other Semifinal......
Who won the Championship that year ?
1959...Chicago Westerners. Over the Bay Bombers too on their home track! Cow Palace!
This is tremendous!! Thanks for posting.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game
I also have a game from this league
This is a real gem of a find. The Hollywood Ravens were one of those teams that only lasted a year or two, when the Bombers first got going in the late 50s
Actually the Ravens came in the NRDL in '54 along with the LA Braves and then-California (Soon to become San Francisco Bay) Bombers, becoming the Hollywood Stars in 1960 before folding.....
Thank the crew for their lousy camera matching.
😆Ha,ha,ha! They have a color camera and then switch to like a black and white security camera for some reason. In the past, commentators used to say " If you missed any of the action. That was the reason to come out and see it in person. "
I skated there.
Where the hell did they find these outfits.
Those uniforms were used in IRSL games decades ago.....must have been in storage somewhere. The white uniforms used to be worn by the New York Braves, and the reddish uniforms were worn by the Red Devils.
@@EagleEyePGB Not exactly right. These uniforms are form after the original Derby shut dow. These are from a start up league that folded real quickly. The white is the Chiefs iuniflorms and the red are Red Devils. The Bravves jerseys were white and yellow with the number in the center of the chest. I wore one in a game skated years after this game
@@lasktdave Actually Perry is referring to the very short lived league, United Banked Track Skating Association. Was it February of 1975, sadly only 3 games were placed. 1st half of one game played @ Madison Square Garden was taped. Yes it was the New York Braves & the Red Devil uniforms worn. Know which uniform you're referring to. That was late 60's maybe. Team that under Ronnie Robinson snapped the Bombers string of world titles.
THE KID HITTING THE CHAIRS WAS COOL AS SHIT THE LAST TIME I SAW THAT WAS BY RONNIE RAINS ON THE N.Y. BOMBERS.
IM AMAZED HOW THIN THE RAILS WERE, THEY COULD HAVE CAUSED REAL INJURIES WITH NO PADDING.
There was another video from a 50s game where 3 men skaters on one team hit the rail at about the same time and the rail gave way. They all ended up on the floor, almost going into the crowd. I think they made sure this never happened again....
HOW ABOUT SOME OF THE TRACKS HAVE A SECTION OPEN. CAN YOU IMAGINE IF A SKATER HIT THAT HEAD ON THE RAIL WOULD GO RIGHT THROUGH TGE SKATER. THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENCE. I MET JERRY SELTZER ONE TIME AND FORGOT TO ASK HIM WHY THEY DID THE RAIL LIKE THAT..IF ANYONE SEES ROBERTA MITCHELL OR JUDY ARNOLD CAN YOU ASK THEM ABOUT THIS.?
JUDY SOWINSKY WOULD BECOME ROLLER GAMES BAD GIRL AS CAPTAIN OF THE NEW YORK BOMBERS WITH PHYCHO RONNIE RAINS.
YOU CAN TELL ANN CAVELLO WITH THAT DAMN SCARF FLOWING AROUND HER NECK.
which number is calvello?I can't find her
@@jontaylor2027number 34 w the bombers....never knew she was w them.....I'm SF....and they were my team....60s and 70 mainly✌️🖖😺😽
@@marshamariner7897 thanks now have to watch it again, love her.she came to Australia with the shamrocks in the 60's .great skater and all round legend
WALT HARRIS WAS ALWAYS A CLASS ACT. WALT GAVE ROLLER DERBY CREDIBILITY.
TOTAL CREDIBILITY. I MET WALT YEARS AGO IN MSG AND SOON AS I HEARD HIM TALK I KNEW IT WAS WALT.
