beautiful videos 😊❤
Glad you enjoyed them!
Awesome to see you get ready! Met you both @ MT. Greylock on my 2023 thru hike. It had started to rain so it was very brief, but I remember the trail magic! Good luck and am so excited to see you journey!!
Yes! Sarah and I remember meeting you and “Frizzle”. Thank you for the Venmo beer money, cheers 🍻
We can’t wait to see your videos. We aren’t able to through hike until retirement in 2028 but counting down the days! Good luck!
We’re really excited to start the journey!
First of all, Good Luck! Understand the nervousness, but take your time, hike your own hike. You will start learning your groove by the time you get to Neels Gap. What a wonderful journey to share with your bride.
I have a Fire Maple. It's gone with me on several camping trips, hikes, and a LASH. It works well.
Is the Paka hoody worth it? It keeps popping up and I’m skeptical. Is it warm, durable? Best of luck on your journey.
Yes, I think it is. It’s thicker than the synthetic sun hoodies I own, which makes me believe it would be too warm for temps above 60. I have worn it during training hikes, 2 to 3 times per week, and purposefully not washed it for a couple weeks (No sweaty smell at all). My only concern is you are not supposed to put it in dryer. While on trail I am thinking this might be an issue. My plan is to wash it on gentle and then roll it up in a towel. I will let people know how its working for me.
Didn’t hear which puffy you will be using? Looks like you are ready! Happy Trails!!
Enlightened Equipment puffy. Yes, very excited to start 😊
Two thumbs up on the battery/charger combo…super fast setup! Great overall gear selections. See you out there! 👊👊
Thanks for watching and we look forward to seeing you on trail!
Good choices, looking forward to following.
Thanks for watching!
Nice video. Interesting pot and stove. Add an SOL large Heetsheet Emergency blanket. It is bigger, tougher, and quieter than mylar. You can put it on top of you sleep pad to feel a bit warmer. When you stop in the cold, wrap it arund you so that you don't get cold right away. Carry a couple of candles and an emergency food supply. It has happened many times before where a group of hikers get stuck at a shelter in an ice storm for a couple of days. Instant oatmeal and essentials can make you a lot more comfortable. The waterproof socks have worked very well in the past, especially in slush conditions. Carry extra wool socks to insulate your water bottles. I don't remember you saying a knife. As an Eagle Scout and an old soldier, I would never go out without a good knife. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
The sealskins are great, wear your darn toughs under them for river crossings. Not only are they waterproof, they’re warm with the darn toughs under them. But don’t wear them when hiking, your feet can’t breathe, so sweat accumulates more than not wearing them.
Really interested in the hiking pants info and cook pot and stove.

Also how much weight you have in you pack.?
I linked my Lighter Pack in the video description, everything but food and water (23.28lbs). lighterpack.com/r/ic0r6d
You also said you were from ENGLAND. My wife and I lived in nh also. I hope you do well
We are actually from New England, but thanks for the well wishes!
So now we have the Lt., the Sarge and Captain Jack on the trail!
Good choices, should serve you well.
Thanks! We're hoping so.
Great loud out! Look forward to following your adventure.
Thanks! We're really excited about this journey.
Great video. Love your choices. My wife and I are heading out next February so I will be watching and learning from your adventure. Good luck.
Thanks, we’re hoping to learn a lot too!
Love it! See you all out there!
Pro tip: buy your second pair of shoes and break them in before you leave for the trail. Have them sent to you when you need them. Buy them 1/2 size larger than you wear now. Breaking in new shoes on trail can be agony and crippling. Have a pair of waterproof socks for the soggy days. They make a huge difference. I was an Army LT, 50 years ago and the saying "take care of your feet and they'll take care of you" is very true. Just wear autodarkening glasses and forget the shades. Thru hiking is a struggle to begin with. The fancy video shots just make it harder. If both of you have cameras, that should be enough. This is going to be a difficult great adventure. You have to make it as easy on yourselves as possible. When my son and I did hikes, we divided the comon gear(3 man tent, cook set, and tools). When he was little, I carried most and as he got bigger he carried more. Now, he would have to carry most. Add pair of tough vinyl gloves. They are light and can waterproof your hands when cleaning things in the cold or when you mittens get wet. I think that I said it before, carry a survival kit incase you get stuck in a storm. Include several of packets of instant oatmeal, cocoa, candles, matches, an SOL Heetsheet emergency blanket. The fuel saver is great. I use one for filling canisters when doing trail magic. The real big canisters only cost $2 more than the small ones and can refill 4 small canisters. Becarefull about overfilling. A very important tool in with your first aid kit is nail clippers. They can prevent a lot of trouble. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
Thanks for all the great advice, Rick!
@@Lt.Hikes0329 You're welcome and too quick. I edited my comment to include nail clippers. Good Luck, Rick
I love gear videos!!!! ❤
Good luck! Id like to know the full weight for everything you have laying there because that's your base weight, regardless of if it's in your pack or on you're body or in your hands, you are carrying that weight. Just seems like a lot more than 19lbs compared to my set up which is a lot less than yours and very similar gear. I'm right at 29lbs with 4 days food and 2 liters of water.
I love your set up and look forward to following your journey. My wife and I are heading out next February/March and I'm pretty sure I'm bringing an ultra lite chair as well (I'll be 58). Can't wait to hear your thoughts about the chair as you hike the trail. Good luck!
Thanks! I think you'll be happy with the chair on the trail!
Through hiked in 2023 at 67 and while the chair sounds nice, I saw only one person with one during my hike and he was a section hiker. I never sat around shelters or fire - I got to camp, set up the tent, ate, and went to bed. Yep, 1900 is hiker midnight.
Nice load out. On my 2016 thru for me at two pounds of food per day and two liters of water, the additional weight for four days was twelve pounds. I've noticed lots of people this year have underestimated the weight of consumables when presenting their prehike kits. I wish it were so light, but after a resupply heading up a gap, my pack was always over 30 lbs ;<).
Ill be at Amicalola Falls for Gateways and heading north soon after .... hope tomsee ya out there
Looking forward to your hike
Great gear choices. Your gear choices show you are an experienced hiker, or someone who has done a lot of research. I have a lot of the same gear. I look forward to following your journey! Just curious in case I missed it in another video...what does Lt stand for? Lieutenant? Military veteran?
Thanks for the comments on Sarah’s video. I am a retired Police Lieutenant.
Good luck! I’m starting a NoBo flip flop March 3 at Damascus. Trail name “Jon Jon”.
We lost our last Newfy almost 16 years ago. I still find Newfy hair when cleaning. Consider a pocket warmer that burns lighter fluid and a Heetsheet Emergency blanket for cold weather. For a couple, an old Army woobie would be a good idea to cover both of you on a very cold night. Carry water purification tablets. You two should share your cook set with a 1+ liter pot to cook a bigger meal. You could use a Nalgene bottle for a hot water bottle at night. Put it in a wool sock. I like the cup that slides onto the bottom of the Nalgene bottle. Historically, there is a snow storm in early April in the Smokies. In cold rain a poncho or umbrella will make you more comfortable because water running down the back of your rain jacket will suck heat out of you. Good video. Good Luck, Rick
Thanks, Rick! I really appreciate the tips!
This is an absolutely amazing trail! How was your experience doing the training hike at Sherman Brook Campsite in North Adams? It seems like such a challenging route would help you learn a lot! Any more trail tips you can share? 10:23
So good! Winter hiking in New England has helped to prepare us for a February start of our 2025 AT thru-hike attempt.
@Lt.Hikes0329 That sounds great! Winter hiking in New England must be a good preparation. Will you document the entire thru-hike experience? It will surely be inspiring for many hiking enthusiasts.
Lt and the Mrs.!! Nice hike guys! From Lt. Mommy, NJ/PA. 😂💙🥶🥾🥾⛺️
No rest for the weary! How cool to be in Massachusetts - I can only imagine the cold & have deep respect for you doing this during this bitter cold time.
Enjoyed the hike with you guys. So glad to see you guys are hiking in the snow. Preparedness is the key.
We're getting ready for whatever the trail throws our way!
We used to have Goofy Newfies, they loved playing in the snow.
Hope you Michelle have a safe trip!! We miss her dearly already at work!
Excited to watch your hiking journey. 🥾
Looking forward to following along!!!!
Looking forward to your start! Im doing a LASH starting in Pawling NY to Mt K in May. Think I may see you out there! Good luck!
Good luck!!
Thanks for showing some hiking with no music. Good video many times MA does not get logged a lot on thru hikes
Glad you enjoyed it! I am going to try and balance the use of music, nature sounds, and narrative in my videos during our thru-hike attempt.
You can always file a tax return and amend it later. It looks like its colder than normal so, be prepared for extra cold. I would just drive to NC. I did Ft Benning to CT in one day. Good Luck, Rick
Thanks Rick!
I'm going to enjoy watching your hikes once you start. Good luck and keep moving forward.
Thank you, I appreciate your support!
Oh no.... what about the cooler. Good luck and gooe tonsee ya out there !
I know! We will do some trail magic when we pass through Massachusetts. See you on trail!
Looking forward to your start😀.
Me too! Thanks for watching.
But it is in NC
Beautiful footage, editing, music. Really looking forward to your AT coverage!
Thanks!
Yeah that looks cold. It’s actually pretty cold in GA as well right now. Hope it warms up for ya some but for sure there will be some cold nights!!
You’re right, it’s definitely a cold start to the year!
It can feel pretty darn cold in the Smokies or Roan Mountains when it is cold AND raining. Any conditioning and gear testing you can do now-you’ll thank yourself later!
Absolutely, good advice!
Beautiful trail. I miss the sounds of hiking footfalls in nature.
Thanks! It's the best sound ever!
You are brave! Let’s hope it’s not that cold 🥶
Spent a wonderful night at Father Tom's! I was the only hiker there and a woman from the maintenance team stopped in to make sure I had everything I needed. I asked about where along trail I could stop in the morning to buy a new lighter and she even offered to go buy one for me right away if I needed it. Loved that place!
That is awesome, what a great experience!
