Badminton Stringing: Gudgeon Knot
Alan Kakinami shows us the Gudgeon knot used for badminton stringing.
Alan Kakinami started stringing in 1995, and by 2000 he started to refine his skills as a stringer. By 2001, he was stringing at the US Nationals and US Opens for badminton. By 2003, he became official stringer at the Siebel Open, now known as the SAP Open, and Bank of the West Classic, the professional tennis tournaments in the Bay Area. In 2005, he was asked to string at the 2005 Badminton World Championships and in 2009 became an official stringer for the Pan American Games for badminton. Over the years AK has become synonymous with QUALITY stringing.

    Hey, just thought I'd drop a comment as Andy was a big part of Portsmouth Badminton Club. We still hold our club tournament, the Gudge Cup every year in his memory and I'm delighted to hear that stringers still remember him too!

    • @TheJabroniStringer

      I never had the chance to meet him but I would hear a lot from the UK stringers about him. He was well loved by Mark and Tim and Marky! I wish I could have had a chance to learn from him, as I have learned a lot from Mark and Tim and Marky (Ralph). I am glad his memory is still going through your tournament, and I hope that the name of this knot will also keep him in the memory of stringers.

      You probably have to find your local Yonex dealer and ask them to send it to Japan. They are very secret about fixing machines. Sorry to hear about your problem.

    Really like this racket model of Voltric Lin Dan Force Rio Gold Edition since it is regarded among the rarest Yonex racket by now. In other words, it is awesome, spectacular performance high end racket, but sadly it is now deeply & madly so harsh or really dammed hard to find nowadays of its non-production anymore...😢

    Hey Alan, thanks for making this video, I for sure have learned a lot from you! Just a question though, do you usually decrease tension on the last five top cross string when finishing? I have been told that if you don’t it will deform the racket badly.

    Hey Alan! Thanks for the great tutorial.. Wanting to really venture into the stringing world but unsure of how to start.. Any tips? Also, what are your thoughts on starting with a drop-weight machine to learn the technique and eventually upgrade by adding on an electronic tensioning system? I understand there are a number of stringing machines that are compatible and allow you to do..

    • @TheJabroniStringer
      @TheJabroniStringer 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You get what you pay for. If you really want to get into it, don't buy cheap, it will only disappoint you. If you want to gradually get into it and have the money, then yea go drop weight, gonna be the hardest to learn on and then going to get easier and easier. If you want to go economical route, get a machine you can upgrade to a Wise electronic tension head like a Prince Neos or the Gamma machines are better with 6 point mounting systems. If you really think you are into stringing the bite the bullet and invest in a proper machine, it will pay for itself in a few years.

      @@TheKakinami so your finishing knot at the main and the cross are the same one. Btw, I also use starting clamp but I scare when I string high tension like 27-30 lbs, the starting clamp affect to the frame.

      Cut the tip at an angle. Make sure the flat tip is on top and angle from the bottom up. If that doesn't work reverse it, cut tip at an angle and make sure flat tip is on the bottom then angle top down. If that doesn't work, I would push down on the main and angle my string up, and if that didnt work I would reverse it and pull main up and angle string down. If these didnt work I might have to find another job, they always work for me. I avoid using my awl to go into the grommet.

    Do we need to change/ up the tension before starting the cross string

    • @TheJabroniStringer
      @TheJabroniStringer 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do it if the customer requests it, or I string a Nanoray GlanZ, for some reason to me that racket always ovals out. I dont see any change on rackets with a 6 point mounting system so I don't do it. Back in the day while stringing on a 2 point mounting machine, peoe would add 10% to help oval the racket back to its original shape. Each stringer has his/her own technique. Do whatever you feel is best for your customers, try it out, maybe you might like the way it feels. I like the way I string so I just go straight, Yonex guys add 10%.

      My tennis boss made us always do label up, so kinda got used to doing that. The machine is Toyozouki String System 8, a Yonex Protech 8, when Toyozouki was an independent company before Yonex took over, they sold their own branded machines about $2000 cheaper without the Yonex name on it. I had a motorcycle guy paint my machine, if you find a motorcycle guy, they do more tricks in painting, car guys have more to cover so they don't like to be fancy.

    Hey alan, thanks a lot for this video. I have a quick question for you. I have a 72 grommet hole yonex isometric 75 mf racquet. When i put the load spreader on my machine at the top of the racquet, it interferes with my last cross... usually i would have 22 crosses,, i start on the bottom 9 and finish on the top 7( which is interfering). My load spreader isn't bigger that usual nor the support on my machine. Any advice Alan ? Thanks

    Hello Mr. Alan how are you? I’m John (Mech. Engg.) from India (North East India) and you are from Malaysia/ Indonesia/....? I loves badminton games and a player too, after purchasing manual stringing machine attached with six clamps. I also started stringing badminton rackets since from july 2020 by following your inspiring techniques-mains tie off both at B9 using gudgeon knots, etc.... For generating more power I started my cross from head/top, because tension losses are always there at tie off... please comment. So far I have strung around 20 rackets, but still I have confusion regarding tensions for mains and crosses. What is the perfect combination tension for mains and crosses?? I used to strung by: - a. 24lbs mains string/26lbs cross string, b. 25lbs mains string/26lbs cross string, c. 27lbs mains string/28lbs cross string, d. can I go for 28/28lbs(mains/crosses) ....???

    Question though..once you've locked the racket on its frame the shaft is then noticeably shaking if moved or touched. So as you're stringing it what happens if you accidentally touched the base of the shaft or the holder or the grip as you're moving/rotating the racket in 360 degree horizontally? Will that 'ruined' or in anyway affect the racket?
