What is a Varicella Zoster (Chicken Pox) Antibody Test?
The Varicella-Zoster antibody test is primarily recommended to check for antibodies formed against the Varicella-Zoster virus, which is the virus that causes chicken pox.
Chicken pox is a highly contagious disease that spreads through direct contact with an infected person or when the infected person coughs or sneezes. The disease spreads within two days of exposure to the virus. It causes blister-like rashes all over the body.
An antibody called IgM starts forming within one or two weeks of the onset of the infection, followed by IgG antibodies a few weeks later. Both these antibodies protect the body from the Varicella virus for a long time.
The chances of recurrence of the disease are very low because the body has already formed antibodies to fight the virus, so if the virus enters the body again, the antibodies protect the body from it. A child who has been vaccinated or whose mother has previously had the chicken pox is at very low risk of getting infected before he or she turns one year old. The varicella vaccine is given to children between 12 and 15 months of age.
The varicella-zoster antibodies test detects the presence of a recent infection. It also checks whether you have become immune to the chicken pox through another infection or vaccination.
Your doctor may recommend this test if you have symptoms of chicken pox.
The symptoms of chicken pox are:
Fever
Sore throat
Stomach pain
Headache
Loss of appetite
Fatigue
Rashes, which can appear in three forms:
Pinkish raised bumps
Small fluid-filled blisters
Bursted blisters that form a crust
The rash may appear 10-21 days after exposure and may last for one to two weeks.
