A Day in the Life: Homeschooling in a Cozy Cabin!
This is a Day in our Life on our homestead. We are homeschooling our four children from our cabin in the woods. We are usually to town at least once a day for one of our kids activities but today we were completely off and at home. I wanted to show you what we get up to and how we school our kids. We do use curriculum but my kids are learning more than that. They learn about farming ginseng, gardening, animal care, baking, etc. Thank you for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe!
Hi my name is Allison and I moved to the woods with my husband and four children. I am a registered nurse that did not comply which ultimately ended my employment. With such a significant change in our lives, we are taking this as a sign to follow our dreams and live a more simple and self reliant life in the woods. Subscribe to the channel to follow along and see what we get up too, how we prep, and how we live simply in a 800 square foot cabin.

The Gourd Life: Chaos in the Garden

This is what happens when you give kids free range of the homestead garden! What I thought was just going to be a fun learning experience for the kids has turned into a huge garden mess...for me! It's ALL OKAY! All of these gourds and pumpkins will be fed to the chickens throughout the winter. It will keep their brains occupied during the long cold days ahead...and give them nourishing seeds to...

This is so inspiring!! I'm a momma of three, 13m, 3f, 4month m. We have been living in the forest for a few months now. Getting a routine going has been a wee challenge especially after the tiny one was born. I am working towards making things a bit more cohesive. Watching videos like this certainly helps to ease my mind and fill me with hope and reassurance!! Thank you so much! Instant subscriber! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much! And good luck! Everyday isn’t perfect but we do what we can and I just know there is so much more to learning than what is in a textbook!
Shouldn't have farted..... geez
Thwack
So glad this had a happy ending! My husband and boys just cleaned our chimney. We almost had a chimney fire once... It's scary!
Terrifying!! We clean monthly now 😅
Beautiful VLOG. ❤️ I want to make that craft with our kids. 😊
Thank you 😌 I made myself one 😝❤️
Have fun out there

Homeschooling your children is the best thing you can do for their moral and intellectual development. Today's k-12 public schools are toxic.
Oh absolutely 👍🏻 it’s a big task but well worth it
I agree 😢 sadly
Bye
Garbage and proud!
I love that you posted this!🇺🇸 MAGA
That looks rlly good tbh
Very good video thanks you like 👍🤩
Thank you!
could it be chard
I did some reading and I guess honestly grown beets often don’t have the bulb like commercially grown. Not sure why!
So cute how all your kids help you
We all work together ☺️
Dont tell your husband i said this but you're a sweety.
I'm jealous. We live in the south and can't grow apples at all. How cool!
Oh! We have apple farms and more apple farms here😊
Omg picturing Ben with a belly shirt and boots got me cracking up 😂. I'm sure if he told Eric about this he left that part out lol. Good thing yall weren't asleep yet, I'm glad yall are on though.
His stomach was all scraped up from the roof!! We had a good laugh a few days later when I could smile again 😂😅
Fun Fact: "modern" stoves cannot choke out a fire by sealing air intake. EPA requirements can only be met if the burn is always oxygen rich, so newer stoves are designed with air bleeds, so the intake(s) CANNOT be sealed off to snuff the fire. Outrageous but true. GOV at its ...usual.
I didn’t know that 😠
@@axesandaprons I wanted to build my own wood stove. I'm an engineer and know ins & outs of thermal reactors. I designed mine like a sealed unit. The steel of the stove and flue were contiguous. The door was a flange seal that could be sealed with bolts and a speed wrench. Zero air in. Zero leaks in the flue pipe, all the way to the top. I tested it. Kills the fire dead, but it does pollute during cool down. Then I bought a Jotul 602. Great little "legal" stove, but "car with no brakes". How many are like that, now? ALLUVUM.
@@jeffwhite9028yeah that’s interesting! Probably not up to code 😂 seems really strange to make them like that…greater risk I’d say.
@@axesandaprons multiple agencies imposing conflicting demands that can't be integrated. Elon Musk had an axe custom made just for those regulations. He'd enjoy using it. ;)
@@jeffwhite9028 Don't worry, that pollution is 100% natural and the planet was made to process it naturally. Don't believe the idiots that believe mankind can and should control everything or not participate at all.
One of my biggest fears! Glad everyone was ok, funny picturing hunny with the (your) belly shirt lmao
It was pretty funny! He did end up having some scrapes on his stomach though 😣
How do you say creosote anyway? 😅
First I would remove the chimney cap have used would heat for most of my life had a few fires over the years . That cap spreads hot embers on to the roof . Let it go straight up most will cool and go out before they come down on the roof .
Your soil seems very compacted for a raised bed!!??
It is! It needs some more organic material in it to loosen it up. We are going to add leaves this fall
Time and money are probably the biggest things that cause new homesteaders to quit. There's a lot of upfront costs and everything takes longer to do than you think it will. Another major reason people quit is the bugs. I've done some homesteading before, but my current homestead is more intense than the previous and I've never been so covered in itchy bugbites in my life!! I can 100% see some people quitting because of the insects.
Can I just say that I was not prepared for the bugs either! Especially in the woods! Our bathroom sink is covered in them during the summer 🫣
Im watching this back for the first time and there is a blank space about half way through 🤨 LOL it was a list of things we had to purchase up front (side by side, ATV, tools and more tools, woodstove, building materials…etc)
Great informative video
Thanks Pat!
How many times a week are you leaving your homestead to do other activities? How do you find the balance of getting out of the home, while still getting everything done on the homestead? I personally struggle with this. Either I’m gone too much and homesteading gets neglected, or I’m home so often I get called a homebody by my social circle. Lol
I’m a loner at heart, truly. But I’m out of the house every day for something. My kids are involved in activities so I’m “forced” to leave! I also volunteer at a horse barn and our entire family rides there. So we get out a lot but I promise everyday I’m thinking about what can we give up some can get more done at home (homesteading or homeschooling). Also, another fair point is that I have only one big kid. She’s a huge help but she is a young girl and not as strong yet so she mostly helps with siblings (which is huge for me). My others are all under 7 and they need me too so I’m constantly doing the balancing act!
Time is a huge factor. This is year two for us, and I’ve learned this lesson well. I thought we could both work full time, have a big garden, do all the preserving, keep chickens, and keep up with the property maintenance. It’s possible if you never rest, but if your job is physically demanding, it’s really tough. I think you got it right. One person needs to only work part time to be able to not burn out. Thanks for your videos! I really enjoy watching them and appreciate your candor.
Thanks for watching! I know a few people who started gardens and they went to waste. Everything takes longer than you think! I run out of time everyday…
Hi. I don't know if you have snakes in your area but I'd be very careful about putting my hands anywhere near rocky areas. Nice harvest.
Yes there might be! I wore gloves 😀 and was really looking!!
We just did our last harvest too
My little guy speaks words I swear 😅😂
Love the outdoor kitchen 💕
Thank you ❤️ I’m so grateful for it!
Awesome and inspiring!!!
Thank you!
That's so cool! I'll be trying some next spring if the slips grow
I have struggled every year to grow slips until the year I saved some of my own sweet potatoes for the purpose of growing slips. I guess the store bought ones are probably contaminated with chemicals! Just something to think about…now I will always use my own (and I’m going to just do it next year since this year I didn’t).
@@axesandaprons that soil looks thick and dense maybe mixing leaves and stuff to soften it may help a bit
@@DennisD-yv4ys I’ve been thinking the same! I’m planning on grabbing leaves to mix in and put on top for weed protection 😃
Thanks for sharing. Plan to dig here soon.
Wow, perfection!
Mice generally do not have babies in the ground but moles do. In either case, the babies are called "pinkies". Since the nest was disturbed like that, the mom most likely not come back and the pinkies will die. If you have chickens or turkeys, they love to eat them. Such is the circle of life.
Thanks for that info!
Sweet potato harvest is great. Really big potatoes. and I'm farming
Thanks!
Someone suggested they could be bunnies? Any opinions??
I loved seeing you enlist the help of your children! So nice that you are making lifetime memories.
Thank you! I consider TH-cam the new “home videos” for us 😁
They are probably newborn rabbits
Oh that’s interesting..I just looked up pictures and it definitely could be. They were gone a few hours later
That's quite a haul of sweet potatoes! Nice to see your boys helping you in the garden.
We are fortunate! Thank you for watching 😁
Cute!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome, and the kids are having fun!
And learning! 😬
