LDSIG Clinic Trevor Marshall
Niagara Electrics: Modelling a Canadian National Railways subsidiary under wire, in 1:64
What layout design decisions are involved when one chooses to model an obscure prototype in a nice scale? Those were questions Trevor faced when he decided to pursue his dream layout - based on the Niagara St. Catharines & Toronto Railway, an electric interurban that once ran through the city where he lived in his impressionable teenage years.
Trevor will share the story of the NS&T, his relationship to it, and how his 40-year interest turned into an opportunity to model it in S scale.
To make this relevant to a broader audience, he'll frame his presentation in terms of the decisions he made before determining whether he could, realistically, pursue this project. These include the availability of suitable information, equipment, and other essentials, new skills that might have to be learned, and painful decisions about what can fit in the layout space and what must be tossed over the side.
Trevor will also share an unexpected development which resulted in a decision to build two smaller layouts in his current space, instead of one devoted exclusively to the NS&T.
About Trevor
Trevor Marshall is a lifelong model railway enthusiast who has worked in multiple scales and gauges. Some of those journeys have been more successful than others, but he's always learned from the process - and often shared what he's learned through Railroad Model Craftsman magazine and other hobby publications. He created, produced, and co-hosted The Model Railway Show - a podcast about the hobby - and was a host on TrainMastersTV. He currently writes a blog on his modelling at themodelrailwayshow.com
In addition to railway modelling, Trevor spent eight years learning to work a border collie on sheep, enjoys playing roleplaying games, and paints miniatures for and plays a number of tabletop skirmish games.
Trevor lives in Saskatoon, Canada, with his wife and two unemployed border collies.

Outstanding clinic! Thoroughly enjoyed Jonathan's presentation and took notes! Didn't know about this channel, YT recommended this video, glad I clicked on it. Subbed.
This is fantastic. I have been a fan of the CNJ Newark branch for many years. I worked for 18 years in Newark just blocks from the terminal from the early 1990's to the 2010's. Some of the infrastructure and "echos and shadows" of the RR were still visible, but rapidly fading under urban decay and redevelopment. And, I've been a fan of Jonathan's modeling approach for the last few years. I see him on the "evolutionary branch" of Dave Brarrows (a fellow architect) in a more "focused and abstract" approach to the hobby. This hobby has a large tent, indeed, Kudos to Jonathan. I look forward to hearing more from him.
appreciate the replay , has given me many things to consider , looking fwd to the next session. rgds . Craig (Australia)
Thanks for this. I already bought the cheap LED strip, but I'll now buy the better products. My layout has two levels, and I have excellent ambient lighting in the room, so my initial thinking was that I don't need more focused lighting on the second level. Bill's oservations make me think that I should install a valence and LED strips on the second deck.
Perfect program for where I am at right now. I have been using 4000K LED bulbs behind my valance both screw sockets and tubes. Love the bright look. These work great around the room walls where the valance hides the bulbs. Now, I have a large peninsula that is wide and will be open. If I do the same thing on the peninsula as I did around the walls, you will see the light source from across the peninsula. I like the LED strips as they are thin in width. I will need a baffle down the center I suppose. My question is, will the LED strips I put on the peninsula be as bright as the LED bulbs I used around the walls? I want uniformity. - Jeff Smith, Manheim, PA
WOW! What an excellent seminar! This gives me a great place to start with my new layout. I would love to see a similar presentation on installing the lighting so that you can dim and do morning lighting, eveing lighting, etc. Thank you!
Thank you for doing this presentation. I learned a lot about LED strip lighting.
