Pleasantly surprised by Piers' behavior
Love is a strong word. Who the fuck loves a form of government? What an exaggeration. Nobody loves a Republic or a Monarchy.
When Colin Firth does this, he’s more level headed and respectful. When it’s Alex O’Connor(who is younger and more articulate than him), he begins to crack and throw mean insults, instead of debating.
'Do you BELIEVE in the royal family?' That has to be the most absurd question. What does that even mean? Believe? Is the royal family an ideology? Is it some sort of theological or philosophical doctrine? Everything about Piers as a human being is just detestable.

Monarchies are only useful if you give monarchs moderate powers. What would change really. The president would also wave, sit and eat while the first minister do the government work. If waving is the problem, give them something to do because it wouldn’t be different in a Republic where the president would watch the first minister get things done.
There are plenty of good reasons for wanting a republic. Firstly, there are the problems associated with the monarchy that would be solved, or at the very least become solvable if we became a republic. The institution of the monarchy through 'the crown' (which Charles supposedly now embodies) gives government almost limitless powers. We saw this with brexit, where for better or for worse, a slim majority in a referendum was pounced upon by government to drive through a hard brexit in spite of considerable objections and concerns on all sides. A republican constitution would allow us to limit the power held by politicians, and instead empower the people to have some control over their political affairs. Since the king is unaccountable, he is unable to perform any duties independent of the prime minister. Ours is therefore a politician's monarchy - the power it gives them is what makes them so appallingly sycophantic toward the institution. We need a head of state independent of the prime minister, able to act as a referee when the PM for example illegally prorogues parliament. A proper representative of the people, not a representative of the elite. A republic allows us as a people to take responsibility for our political affairs, instead of being ruled by a political elite, who may for example drag the nation into a very clearly immoral war against the people's wishes. Furthermore, every citizen should feel equally empowered to ultimately become head of state, not to be told from birth that they must defer to the male line of one over-privileged family, for all their evident faults. The cruelty of the institution toward royal children, by the way, is a whole other reason why monarchy is wrong. The monarchy is not there to benefit Britain, which is why pro-monarchy propaganda so eagerly stresses (with the aid of made up figures about financial cost and benefit) the benefit that they supposedly provide. It is there to benefit our political elite. We can hold out hope that at some point along the line, a decent monarch will pop up, but the only way to ensure we have an accountable political class working for the people rather than themselves is through a republic

You can study, understand and even play historical figures. It doesn't automatically make you a royalist. People are fascinated by characters like Napoleon, Henry the 8th etc, but it doesn't mean they want one as their so called head of state in 2023.
