what's that? tongue and groove pliers.
Often known as groove-lock, plumbing pliers or channel locks, these tried and true pliers should be in every toolbox.
There are much higher quality pliers that have the same functionality as these, (knipex for one.) but these are generally inexpensive and far easier to find.
That said, I have a lot of them in a wide range of sizes from 3 inches to 20 inches. The ones I most often carry with me though are a set (2) of 10 inch channellock brand.
Just like a pipe wrench, buy them in pairs.

    • @captainahab5650
      @captainahab5650 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not without seeing it. If there is a hole present, then bore out any old wood and replace with new. If you're forced to reuse the old handle, Glue it together as best you can, then wrap with glue saturated twine (Not nylon. Sisal or other natural fiber.) And allow to dry fully. Should last a good long time.

    The clip that you are calling a "spring clip" is actually a snap ring and the proper tool to remove snap rings is called, (no mystery here) a snap ring plier, and they come in both internal and external. The one you are removing is an external snap ring; they go over the outside of a shaft, while an internal snap ring is mounted inside a hole and has to be squeezed "inwards" to remove it, hence the name Internal Snap Ring. Internal snap rings are commonly used to retain bearings inside a bored hole.

    Are crush washers one time use only? Also, the end result of a crush washer is essentially a washer after it gets compressed, why not just use a regular washer? And I don't understand how metal to metal contact can provide a good seal??

    • @captainahab5650
      @captainahab5650 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Realistically, you CAN get multiple uses from a crush washer, but that is entirely dependent on consistent torque and a 100% clean mating surface (on both sides of the washer) but they're cheap, so replace them. The reason you get a good seal is the same reason an o-ring provides a good seal. You have a softer material sandwiched between two harder materials. (This is also why you should change them regularly.) The softer aluminum of the washer deforms and fills any irregularities of the harder materials (the bolt and the oil pan in our case.) if there is an irregularity and you've reused your washer, it may not seal 100%. It'll be relatively unnoticeable if you only do it once or twice, but eventually it will leak. It probably won't be a lot, but again, Why risk it? They're very inexpensive.

I sold a CNC recently with a black box that I installed, even though its components were older, I was able to remove its old controller (A big thing, maybe 18 x 12 x 7 inches) and replace it with the black box, and simply wire it in. it functioned better than with the old controller, and took maybe 20 minutes to install. Something that will help you tremendously would be, when you make your next set of flasks, cut a groove down the middle of the inside sides of your flask boards, at least 3/4" wide and 1/2" deep, all the way around the inside. This forms a trough that holds your rammed sand inside your flask pieces, so it won't just slide out! Whichever is going to be the BOTTOM flask, make a V out of 2 pieces of wood or metal, with the V like that on ONE side, about mid-ways (Female) Then Make a matching V, that will go into that V on the bottom but be screwed to the top flask piece, (Male). This designates the bottom and only will go together ONE WAY. Use an old teaspoon squeezed together to be a trough maker and a serving spoon to dip out dross from on top of your liquid metal, in your pot. Use 24" of ice-maker plastic tubing, one end held in your teeth and you holding the other end to eliminate stray pieces of mix. (Use an old sock to hold your relief dust, to dust your pattern BEFORE adding mix onto it. ) Always, before ramming up your flask, run your mix, (of ultra-fine silica sand and Southern Bentonite dust and very little water), thru a piece of 1/4" x 1/4" hardware cloth wire, stretched across a box made of 2x4's 10" x 12" . Put your mix in there and shake it back and forth over Your flask. This assures there aren't any clumps that will throw off your casting! Hopes that helps

      It's more about having a well defined point than it is about sharpness. If there are big knicks or flat spots in the chisel, the line will not be crisp and may wander making the break jagged/crooked/or completely in the wrong area.

      Sadly, money was always the issue before, and now money and time. I'm about to make 2 days a week shop time with zero interruptions. Start telling everyone that I have another job. Maybe then I'll get to work. I've inherited all the birdfeed and chicken feed too now. But, a free small shed is in the works so I'm hoping to get mechanic stuf out of my shop. All the while... Still gunning for an organized shop. I know what I want, but getting there seems impossible most of the time.
