David Grissom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 พ.ค. 2012
My name is David Grissom. I have been a journeyman carpenter with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters for 20 years. I am turning my interests from run of the mill carpentry to sawmilling lumber and fine furniture building. I will be doing videos on my cell phone showing everything from cabinet installation and sawing logs into lumber to setting up my small shop in a shed in our backyard and my learning, failing, and hopefully a few wins along the way. I want to learn and perfect my craft. I don't want to be run of the mill, I want to be exceptional.

how I install c channel in the bottom of a table top
มุมมอง 161ปีที่แล้ว
How I install c channel under a bowed table top. first thing I do is I cut the c channel to length. then I use my cnc to cut the slots but I damage bits doing this so I will be going back to just drilling 4 holes and connecting them with a die grinder. then I make the jig you see clamped down to my top. it is 1/8 or a touch more bigger than the c channel. 3/16 would be OK as well. then I set up...

They wouldn't return my call on Pre-Sales questions... Not a warm fuzzy feeling. Going to move on to another vendor.
so it's basically a cnc "kit" then. Which will require accurate set up
From what ive seen and read, Wet bulb and dry bulb are not supposed to be above baffle. Also, the vent across from dehumidifier is the intake vent, the exhaust vent is the powered one. That being said, your louvers on intake are backwards. The air won't suck in the way you have it oriented.
Sounds like you don't like this machine much. I'm thinking about buying one but it seems you don't care for it much. Frankly, this is the first time I've heard any of these complaints. Thanks for letting us know. Perhaps I'll buy a onefinity.
That's nice to know. Thinking about switching to the Rippers
What pulley is at the top of your arch?
First video I've watched where the man is smart enough to use a cordless switch on his winch instead of dragging that cord around or running back and forth to the switch on the winch itself. Good job!
Sweet
lost all credibility when he started talking about loose screws. Main takeaway: even a moron can successfully operate the shapeoko 5.
your motor looks like a automotive windshield wiper motor, good vid
You want to know junk...try a HD 36...time consuming crap...these are one piece and fast...making 4...
Is anyone having problems getting in touch with carbide3d my shapeoko 5 is down, not working and I can not get support to contact me it’s been a week and haven’t heard from them
Making 3 sets...thanks for that vid
Great vid on log dog review...way better than Norwoods dogs
Great review. I just sold my SO3XXL and will be ordering a 5 Pro. On the pauses, it's definitely Carbide Motion. I installed the latest Carbide Motion on my SO3XXL and all those pauses are now there. My machine wouldn't work right on V6 of motion correctly, so downgraded to V5.
Nah dude, they are complete junk. I would not consider buying another Hudson until they fix this issue.
i don't think they are that bad. the only thing i hate about them is dogging a big log down low. but then i just screw it to my mill bed now. im a hud-son fan and have owned 3 now and yes i have owned a wood meizer and an ez boardwalk as well as ive helped people with woodland mills. id say the best are the dogs on the ez board walk but then hudson is second.
I'm really impressed with your sharpener David. Nicely done. The cam mechanism is brilliant. Looks like I have another project!
What motor did you use on Amazon?
I made it halfway thru b4 I realized I can’t listen to a guy bitch about wiring etc when he can’t even cut off his poorly placed tywraps proper …. Cheers
in my defense this was only a couple days after I had it running. I didn't think I was bitching i was simply stating my findings.
Do More videos with it Subbed............best regards
good feedback 👍
as far as the oil, they sell a maintenance kit now
why buy ? totally only waste money thats, ewery normal men can build same machine in garage DIY but lot lot better parts, biggest better motors, same rails, spindle etc, but important lot lot cheapen and not waste money than idiot. idiot pay 4000-6000$ to this cnc machine if all normal men can build same machine less than 1400$ or better can build.
I use one of those light controllers on my HAAS TM1 and TL1 for coolant.
If I get one I will just assume that every screw is loose and go through the entire thing with a screw driver and a marker.
Hey Dave - thanks for the video. I’m trying to decide between this CNC and the Onefinity Journeyman Pro. Did you do any compares prior to buying this Shapeoko?
I'm in the exact same spot. Did you make a decision yet?
Genius! Learned something new today! Thanks!
Does Iowa not capitalize their I’s lol
Why are you scribing the finished face of your project and why is your square comically small? 😂 Sometimes a longer video is required because this leaves too many questions unanswered. P.s for the love of God, sharpen that pencil.
1. Because erasers exist and that's the side he's working. How do you expect to calibrate a CNC machine using a mark on the back of the board? 2. It's a machinist's square, iirc, and it works so why get a bigger one? Guy could've used a sheet of cardstock and it would've illustrated his point just fine. 3. Some people are smart enough to not need their time wasted with answers to stupid questions. Video did everything it set out to do. I now know how to easily find the center of a circle. 4. For the love of God, get a life.
This was a screwed up cribbage board. I used this technique to find the center of the board so I could hog out the center of it and inlay a piece of ash in it and save it. I usually reference the lower left corner of my work in the cnc but when that corner is gone i have to find center. as for my comically small square as stated below it is a machinist square, far superior to carpenter's squares for accuracy. but i have many squares like a 6 inch and a 12 inch as well as many speed squares and framing squares. this one just fits in my apron the best.
Technically you used a ruler, not a straight edge because of the measurement of length
Is there a video on how you built this?
there is not. I didn't have time to video anything i needed it done in 2 days.
It’s better than the screw in. Over time you break it in.
You complain an awful lot for the very basics of cnc stuff. those rails and ball screws do not need very much maintenance I grease my linear guides once every 6 months and jus brush off the lead screws with a paint brush diff machine self built but same style hardware. The hiwin bearings for example say every 500km of travel.
i didn't think I was complaining at all. I was just stating my opinion. I love this machine and have made a lot of money with it. i just try to make honest and fair videos trying to it as objectively as possible. i mean seriously who wants to watch a video where everything is great and this thing is amazing nothing was wrong! that is a video the manufacturer can and does make.
is that a sweepy 2 for dust collection?
Don’t buy this machine. I just bought one. They sent it with an untested controller that was defective with a common problem that is plaguing their controller boards. They say they fixed the problem as of a few months ago but my board purchased a couple weeks ago had the same issue. The company themselves wrote blog posts on this issue talking about how much of a problem this has been for them. They are trying to push out more of these than they can handle to quickly. Their support is awful as well. They knew I was backed up on orders because of their delays after many email correspondence calls and voicemails. Despite saying they would overnight a controller I still haven’t even received so much as a shipping confirmation after almost a week of following up daily. Save your frustration and money. Buy a more professional machine. If you’re trying to start a side business it will pay itself off in no time. Why spend thousands on a junk. They have great TH-cam marketing but don’t be fooled!! Do you buy power tools at harbor freight? Then don’t buy a shapeoko
Do you wish you bought the 4x4 table?
no. i absolutely love the 2x4. it fits my work space perfectly. i don't have the space to dedicate 4x4 to a cnc
As a former toolmaker I'd recommend a silicone based lube for lead screw, and clean with a microfiber towel, not an air hose. I'd viewed many vids online with ones blowing off debris with air. Air is the worst application one can apply around any computerized equipment; and guys stop blowing your clothes off with an air hose you're going to end up in an ER - just my thoughts from years experience.
Loose screws - on a machine of that size, I'd appreciate loose screws on delivery, actually. Something this big and comparatively lightweight has quite some flex to it and will also have bent and twisted during delivery. So, instead of that force going straight onto the structual bits, it'd be better for the machine to be able to give a little. I'd then first set up a stable, flat and very level foundation and then place the thing on there and carefully, step by step measure for parallel with a micrometer and for squareness with a machinist square, then fasten screws and tap with a rubber mallet until i get the precision i'd like to have. Also, all grease traps need feeding, then. Yes, when you blast that thing through wood, you might not see the difference (in brass, bronze or aluminum you definitely do), but your bearings, screws and other mechanical parts will have a much longer lifetime for it.
Great review. I had a 3 XXL and now have a 4 Pro. The 3 XXL was a great machine. In retrospect I should have kept it, as I have had a few issues with the 4 Pro. I am looking into the 5 pro as I could use the extra cutting space, and I like the improvements (in theory) over the 4 Pro.
Thanks for the video. Did the mounting holes match, or did you drill new? Any chance you could put a link from you purchase history in description?
For your dust collection it is possible to share the "trigger" wire in the VFD and run it to a Relay that matches the voltage of the trigger, if there isn't enough current coming from the board, you can add a transistor as a "pre-Relay" before the relay using another power source for the current to operate the larger relay. It is advised to use a diode in between the vfd and the relay to eliminate any feedback to the board or vfd. I know this may be out of a lot of people's ability to do, but I just thought I'd put it out there. You can find videos to do this, "using a NPN transistor as a relay" or replace with PNP depending on the polarity of the voltage being used.
i am not that electrically minded to know how to do all of that. I actually dont mind hitting a button.
David. What did you do on the trailing end of the log to anchor it. Couldn't see how you were blocking the trail end from moving. Thanks
i screw up through the plywood into the log
smart
Quick fix with lockttie
I'm just going to leave this here as Carbide is having all kinds of QA issues, there are A LOT of broken machines customer support is throwing parts at hoping for the best. Even going as far as to blame some unknown 3rd party and pass off responsibility to them. These machines are NOT tested before they leave, they are essentially assembled and drop shipped from a 3rd party. Carbide doesn't even see 99.99% of the machines as they go out. Missing hardware is common. Bad electronics is VERY common now. So in short no, you shouldn't buy this machine.
my machine has ran flawlessly for about a year now. initially it had a couple hickups but now it is great.
Thank you!
Damn brother. Thanks for making this. I have their older pro. It’s okay at best. I’m looking at another brand all together so many times I’ll be in the middle of a long cut file and the damn thing just stops. It’s still spinning but the machine freezes so I have to start all over again
just FYI i love this machine now. started a bit rocky but it is an amazing machine now.
Hearing protection?
yes i have ear buds in.
Amazing! I've been looking around for DIY slab flattening rigs, and this is the best one I've seen. About how much did this cost you to make?
i have around $700 in it total. 200 router 200 aluminum 300 rails
I am thinking of getting one, is it best to use lock tight on the screws?
