Are there any dangers to having a converter without batteries hooked up? Its how my rvia tiny is set up and sometimes enters a recharge mode (yellow status light); not sure whats happening since there is only shore power.
So the converter in the rv doesn’t have great rectifiers to make a dc signal. The battery is there to help clean up the dirty dc signal from the converter.
I thought the thumbnail said "What are RV convertibles?" I was really intrigued.
Todd thanks for the great videos. A lot of folks get confused on the 3 devices, inverter, controllers and converters. They talk about one thing and mean another thing. Maybe you can do a video explaining what the 3 devices do. Controller is used for your solar to down size the voltage to 12v, inverter is a device that converts 12v DC to 120v AC and the converter does the opposite of a Inverter it converts 120v to 12v and charges your batteries too.
Ok sooo...🤔 *All RVs comes with a converter *There's 2 types of converters *All converters are maintenence free *All converters has their own breaker *All converters tells you to leave in the fall *All converters works off shore power *All converters when plugged into shore power is on *All converters are hidden *All converters recharges your battery Question: *Besides hearing the fan running how do I know if my converter works? I can park my travel trailer at my house WITHOUT being hooked up to shore power, and just from listening to the stereo for 3 to 4hrs a day kills the battery within 1-2½ days. The battery will be DEAD. So to charge the battery I need to hook it to shore power. Normally, I hook my jump pack to the battery to use the electric hitch. By the time I get to a campground the battery is somewhat fully charged from I'm assuming the 6plug to the truck while we are traveling.
GREAT VIDEOS TODD!!! BUT……. My lithium compatible converter went bad. I can’t get it to charge my batteries, with my generator running. I always shut off the converter when we boondock, and use solar. I turn it back on, when I plug into the generator, to charge the batteries, on rainy days. HELP! What could be wrong? PS…. I’m a vet, and am getting ready to take your fundamentals course, with my GI bill. Thank you Tracy Meskel (Fishchaser)
I see no reason to turn off your converter since it only operates when you plug into shore power or generator power. I only see it necessary to turn off your converter (battery charger, and converts 120v power to 12v power) when you are running an inverter with your RV plugged into the inverter. It causes a charging loop. I have a 20mp stand-alone lithium charger cables directly to my batteries so I can plug shore power or generator into it and charge my batteries.
How about a tech tip on whether the converter in the rv that comes with the lead acid batteries can be used when the owner switches to Lifepo batteries?
Great information! Love the videos! Thanks for sharing and safe travels!
You guys are the best!! So cool seeing y'all there at the show!
We can’t do without you Todd!!
Awesome information as always! Great job! Thanks for sharing and safe travels!
We love our ice maker!
we had a really cold winter a few back and uncle larry's propane tank blew up so I guess this explains that
He was totally on point. I experienced propane lock out. I followed the steps and it worked perfectly. THANK YOU!
Focus? Thought my glasses were dirty! Lol😅
Yeah, this was shot remotely with a cellphone so the quality is not so great. The good news is your eyes are perfectly fine :-)
Thank you!
😂 this should be exciting! I would love to be an expert...at least at something. RV'ing sounds the smartest way to go. 😊
I'm no expert...but I am a lot smarter since going to the NRVTA!
72 hour fasts are TOUGH! This will be some fun though!
It was tough! Had moments of weakness...can't wait to share the experience with y'all.
Todd I have a 2016 skyline nomad 308bh. The heat comes out of all vents except the one in the rear bedroom. There's a vent in front bedroom 2 vents in the kitchen dining area 1 in bathroom, but the rear bedroom doesn't give heat. I tried a shop vac which didn't help. Do I need to go under the rig and drop the underside to access the ducts or anything else I can do to open this duct? Appreciate your comments
Some time please explain the conversion to 24 or 48 volt advantage and is doing so really necessary
"Is ran" is bad English. "Is run" is correct.
@@bogtrotter5110 Bad English was a wonderful 90s band. I hear your request.
Thank you, i think the back pressure reset is what has just happened to me. Given up and gone to bed with the oil rad but i will try turning the valve off in the morning.
Great info, thank you 👍
If it's 22 outside, put your cooler outside. That's plenty cold to keep your ice from melting. Here in Alaska, I call my back deck the "free freezer" for several months of the year. :)
Get those hand warmers they have at the checkouts and place it on the thermostat in the refrigerator.
“Eat the ice cream”! Best tech tip ever. Drop the mic.😂
Plug a light bulb in the back where the fins are and tape off one of the 3 vents on the plastic cover.
In my experience, absorption fridges struggle in all temperatures! 😉 But seriously, the 12v compressor fridges get colder faster and don't have to be kept nearly as level as absorption fridges do. I'm sure that many RVers have ruined their absorption fridge by operating it when it wasn't close to level. Of course, the catch is that you need sufficient power to operate a 12v compressor fridge.
My GE fridge DC 12V manual says at temperatures of _ < 50F, it will struggle to operate efficiently. And yes, at less than 50F, performance sucks. It basically barely works. Temps above 50F, works great.
I snuggle up to my wife with a blanket to keep warm. She's my electric blanket 😊
Unless you are in a area where there are Bears, put the freezer stuff outside in the 20 degrees during the night or even the daytime if it is could enough. I always wonder why folks whine about losing all there food during a power outage caused by an ice storm when it's cold enough outside to safe the food for a good while.
during winter ice storm outage friend at local electric company would ask caller "is your house equipped with an outside?"
I'm running my fridge on electric. I put some reflective inside the vent area outside
I will periodically fully charge with an external lithium batt charger, in addition to the on board Solar charger, till I get around to swap Converter. Unless that is a no-no!,
Great videos always and even better my two favs in one video, can I do my top charge with a battery charger that connects directly to the battery periodically? And if so how often should I do it.
Get a lithium charger, they are cheap in comparison, Or maybe you can reset your existing charger. Schiender C30, C40, C60. IOTA's have replaceable modules for battery type. Cost $25
False
Pfft perfectly fine is just not good enough. 24 volt is the way to.
Losing the will to live with batteries.
If you’re talking about an RV toilet system, most of the modern RVs and fifth wheel trailers have a “macerator“ that grinds up any solid waste matter so that it will not settle into a solid in the toilet tank and it will flow out freely when you dump your black water.OK that’s my opinion, people say I don’t know shit about shit, but I actually do.
Most??? I assume you work in the industry and have more contacts that I do? I assume you visit the OEMs and look at the models and work with the MFGRs? Most? No not most. Not even close. Most toilets offered in the RV space is still a standard RV toilet probably by a margin of 50 to 1. Now having a macerator is great, not against it at all. But your supposition of most have them is incorrect.
Miligdinium is a better battery than a magnesium 😅😅😅
Its all about the cathodes.
The longest life possible for a lithium battery is usually achieved by keeping the charge between 20% and 80% at any given time.
But you can't tell what the state of charge is between 20 & 80% without logging how much you have put into or taken out of it, the voltage difference is too small to use reliably, and you need to fully charge it to reset the 100% mark regularly so your SOC info is correct. Don't bother, just fully charge every time. Also, don't replace a lead acid with lithium without changing the charger, it has the ability to burn your alternator out because lithium will take everything your alternator can produce and can make it overheat. Get a charger with a lithium profile and a shunt to log the SOC.
This is true- however there is a big caveat- if you dont get the pack voltage high enough for the BMS to balance- which generally only occurs above 80% SoC, you will shorten the life of the pack
I didn’t hear exactly WHAT a person would switch over TO.
*2 brilliant minds.*
If you have a correct solar charger it should bring the charge level up over the 80 percent.
The acid battery charge controller will bring the lithium batteries to about 75%-80% and then the solar will take it from there and charge the batteries to 100% assuming you have clear sunny day. In my situation I have to run a power cord across the sidewalk in front of my house and go 30 feet to a porch 120v 15ampo power receptacle on the house. My HOA don't like cables going across the side walk for safety reasons. I have to put up orange safety cones and light up the area like a airport runway.
If you've got a small capacity lithium battery (100ah), with a 100 watt solar panel on the roof, the solar can top off the battery beyond the 13.6v you'll get from your lead acid charger/converter. This isn't the best solution. But it's a budget-friendly way to covert over to lithium (if you've already got a solar panel on the roof).
Just same here my solar would charge the lithium batteries to 100% but sometimes it won't charge to 100% when my RV is stored under a awning at a storage faculty, it only gets indirect sun light. On a cloudy day when my solar isn't getting enough sun m y batteries are not getting fully charge driving sown the road with our 12v fridge on. After a year of using my old existing acid battery controller I upgraded to a Lithium charger for around $150. I use 120v outside power to keep the batteries 100% before we hit the road.
If I have an older inverter/charger that does not have the ability to charge lithium, can I put in a DC to DC charger to increase the voltage for lithium charging? I guess I'd also need a second DC to DC charger for alternator charging. Is this a possible scenario?
A DC-DC charger is certainly capable of charging the batteries in your RV, but you need (1) wiring of an appropriate gauge, probably around 6-8 AWG and (2) with a stock alternator, 30-40 amps is probably the most that you can safely draw from your tow vehicle without risking damage to your alternator. But for possibly less than the price of all that, just upgrade your converter/charger to one that can properly charge lithium batteries. Now, if you actually do have an inverter/charger, there's a good chance that it can be programmed to charge lithium batteries correctly.
@@calledtojourney This is on 1995 Class A diesel pusher with a 160 amp alternator. The inverter charger is so old that all it has are DIP switch settings for LeadAcid or AGM only. Yeah, I'm shopping for an inverter upgrade, but if there's less costly way to do it for now, I'd like to explore that too.
@@sammysnit1688 Well, if you got 30 years of use out of it, you're already ahead of the game!
This reminds me of the legend of the poop pyramid. It is said the Poop pyramid is the final resting place for the lesser known brother and royal heir of King Tutankhamun. King Pootankhamun. Though the tomb of Pootankhamun has never been found, it is rumored that while other Egyptian pharaohs, including King Tut, chose granite to be the material from which their burial sarcophagus were carved from. Pootankhamun was said to eschew this tradition of his predecessors and ordered that his sarcophagus to be constructed of gleaming white porcelain. On a historical side note, while current consensus credits China with the creation of porcelain. Recent archeological discoveries in the Egyptian desert including fragments of porcelain, point to evidence that porcelain was first created in ancient Egypt nearly 30 centuries ago .Only rediscovered by the chinese some 2500 years later. ( ;
With a 12 volt system,,, and a 24 volt battery. Would I not fry my system, .
I'm not sure about your comment but does that imply that you're not flushing your tank once or twice takes more than 5 minutes
Thanks I live fulltime in RVPark. WiFi is included. According to my Roku tv the signal strength signal is poor. The download speed is good (15 MBPS). The router is at the front of the park. I am in the rear. They put up a booster in between us and the router but it’s still poor. I am under a metal carport cover. Bedroom is in the front facing their booster, tv in bedroom has fair signal strength. What can I do to enhance the signal?
