Ultralight ADV - 20days/3200miles solo on a KTM 350 EXC-F (Mosko Moto R40 packed, tools, gear, etc)
This video walks through what I pack and where I pack it on my KTM 350 EXC-F dirt bike for long-distance, "ultralight" adventuring. All my tools weigh less than 7lbs (four bags), and remaining gear (tent, camp kitchen, sleep gear, town/camp clothing, misc.) weighs about 35lbs total (including weight of bags). Total riding weight is ~350lb.

Oil Changes - This seems to be the most asked question in the comments. Basically I think the service intervals are way over-rated. 15hrs is ridiculous IMHO. I'm going at leisurely "touring" pace, not crazy race pace. So, I did one oil change in Moab (about half-way through the trip) and it was fine. Cleaned the air filter and replaced the fuel filter, too. These EXC bikes can literally go around the world (google Aaron Steinmann: blog.ktm.com/around-world-ktm-500-exc/) so the oil changes are not a big deal.

Q - Weapon system test

This is a full speed test of Q's weapon system. The tachometer reads a max RPM of about 3400. I did the math and I think this is about 80% efficient, which seemed pretty good for a friction system. The weapon ring weighs approximately 400g, roughly 31% of the robot's total final weight (~1300g). Note that the camera is on a tripod and I'm not near - be safe when doing combat weapon tests.

      Had to sell for life reasons. My next bike will probably be a FE501 - seems a bit better for long distance BDRs etc. My crazy single track days are likely over.

    Enjoying your videos, wondering if the KTM maintenance a problem oil, valves ,over the Honda Crf easy maintenance.

      Hi. I think generally the Honda is more "set it and forget it". The oil change intervals are much longer and I suspect the valve checks as well (my Honda still is very low miles so valves not an issue; but I did check the KTM valves several times when I had it and it was always in spec). The KTM needs an oil change realistically every 1000~2000mi, more regular air filter cleanings, oil filters, and periodic valve checks. But, you're getting a much more high performance machine with the KTM. Some other factors to consider are weight, ride, and cost: KTM is very light, more vibrations, and more expensive; Honda is heavier, smoother riding, and much cheaper. I did upgrade my Honda suspension with front and rear Rally Raid gear because the stock Honda suspension is pretty crappy. Overall, I'd say the Honda is like a basic Toyota, and the KTM is like a tuned Mercedes.

    How does your bike ride on the long freeway rides?

      Longest stretch on pavement was 400+ miles (Port Orford to SF). It’s only a 350 so a bit buzzy at 65mph. Seat Concept seat helps. It can do it but it’s not what it’s great at.

    Do you think this would have the power to fully inflate a regular street bike tire from 0 PSI to a 30ish PSI on a single charge?

      Not sure. It pumped two dirt bike tires up to ~15psi so you might be able to get one to 30.

    Finally an adventure bike that is rideable, light, and setup for any terrain designed! You built an awesome example! I live in remote CO and ride a 2017 KTM 1090R for fast pavement rides to beautiful and easy off-road adventures. My 2023 KTM EXC-F is perfect for technical and difficult local off-road rides. At 73, and having a Macaw family that I love, my rides are completed in one day, but having two dedicated bikes designed for on/off-road riding, life is good! Thank you for sharing your adventures Chris!

      Oil info in the video description. Maintenance costs are higher than lesser bikes (eg more frequent oil changes, like 1000-1500mi vs 5000+ miles, etc) but you get more performance. You need to check the valves periodically but they never moved on me. Clean your air filter often. Join the EXC/FE Facebook group - best source of info on these bikes. It’s a great bike.

    I do love MM but they are not UL...they have a long way to go and after talking to them at a recent dirty lizard...they appear to have no interest in UL.

      I actually agree with you. MM makes great gear but it's heavy and I think overbuilt. I sold the R40 bags a while ago and currently use 2x Kreiga OS-12 bags plus a small top dry bag (Giant Loop Rogue). These bags don't have all the bells and whistles of MM but they are well built and considerably lighter.

      They're overrated for casual ADV riding. You can safely do an oil change every 1000~1500mi. Send it.

      Thanks. No major mods. All CA smog stuff intact. Seat concepts seat, 4.2 gal tank, adjusted gearing, better headlight, mirrors, bash plate, and other minor stuff. No changes to engine or suspension other than stiffer rear spring. I'm not running Erzberg here so the bike was fine pretty much stock with ADV upgrades.

      I wouldn’t say it’s the best highway bike. You’re high up and I had no wind screen. So you get blown around a bit. You can hit 75mph but it’s a bit buzzy. I did a couple hundred on tarmac but the bike is better on dirt roads and trails.

    The idea of having such a piece of equipment often went through my mind... but at the end, just throwing my bike on the ground, or using some rock or log does the job and works. Quite a different story for those having heavy 2-cylinders adv bikes with high and sensitive fairings.

      True. I've also laid the bike down or found a rock, but a dedicated stand is *so* much easier in my view. With this design I add very light weight and the convenience is worth it to me.

      Fair suggestion. The one-handing is definitely not ideal for some parts. But of course I'm trying to keep it all light, and the tripod is just more weight and another thing to pack. Anyway, appreciate the thought.

    how is 350 doing today?

      Had to sell it and downsize to one "do everything" bike - a '21 CRF300L. Does fine around town and on ADV, but not as capable in the dirt as the 350. My next bike will probably be a FE501S but it will be a while.

      Yes. I’m riding more dirt roads now and longer distance so the 501 I think is better.

    Great concept, however my concern would be having enough space to access the valves on certain wheels because of the size of the pump.

      Hadn't thought of that. Plenty of room on this bike and I would assume most spoked wheels. But I suppose something people would need to check.

      Sure thing. Less is more. I find every trip I usually am able to get rid of something I see I'm never using. Go light, go far, go fast! Cheers.

    I LOVE this bike. But a question: How do you manage oil change and valve checks? I know that you have to do once every 10 hours of riding or every 500~600 miles. How do you manage traveling long distance?

      Answered in the video description. With good oil and a non paper filter (check out TacoMoto Mother of All Oil Filters) you probably could go 2000mi before an oil change. Send it.

      @@LooxJJ Sure thing. Seriously, the oil changes are no big deal. I think you can safely go 1000~1500, and with that special oil filter probably longer. These are amazing bikes and guys are showing they can be taken round-the-world (google Aaron Steinmann or RTWPaul). Safe travels!

    This video should be BDR/Overland 101; I’d take that same loadout on a Harley, ADV, or dirtbike. I’d add a Gore-Tex bivvy and a (luxury) pony saddle blanket and tarp

    I love my KLR, but am gonna go with lightweight for a couple BDRs (and dirt-biking where the KLR can’t). Thinking KLX300....

      Lighter is generally better, especially solo. The KTM/Husqvarna bikes are the lightest you’ll find with decent power, but they’re not cheap. Safe travels - I think you’ll enjoy riding a lighter bike.

    Nice setup. I landed here because I was looking for images that shows the Acerbis 4 gallon tank on the KTM 350 to see if displaces the shrouds. Now I know but also about the dead battery capacitor. Wow, good to know! Thanks! Have you considered using a bear canister and spray? The spray can also serve for some personal protection.

      Glad it's helpful. I wasn't in grizzly country so no need to carry bear spray.

    I have been wanting to do the same on the 350 EXC, but my only concern is the engine oil interval, just wonder how you manage that?
