Queer ice dance teams in Canada...is the US next? | Gender identity in figure skating policy
มุมมอง 525ปีที่แล้ว
Skate Canada announced that ice dance and pairs teams now consist of "two skaters" which opens the floor for varying identities and potentially interesting teams domestically. While it'll be a while before we see anything internationally (if ever), lots of folks have been asking when the US will take the leap. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news... How American Ice Theatre changed my life | Adult Weekend Skateaway 2022

Can you be a nonbinary figure skater? What's the role of gender in figure skating?

      Don't quote me on this since I'm not 100% sure but I think the Scott Hamilton skates use Antares boots with MK Flight blades, so fundamentally nothing is different except the Scott Hamilton is a full skate.

    A very good review!! I pretty mush agree on all the points you made. I started out in Artistes as well, and I've landed up to flip in these skates. The most "advanced" spin I've done succesfully in these skates is a camel spin, and honestly I felt quite supported! I've skated in Artiste's for 8 months, and they are b e a t up! For reference, I'm and adult skater, 5,7" and 163lbs (ish). I've just upgraded to Jackson Freestyles, and I'm looking forward to seeing what I can achieve in them!

    How does the fit of Risport Royals compare to the GH Loop Skates? What are your sizes in the boots? ive fallen into a figure skating rabbit hole and very much want to learn, but im currently exploring it through fiction, and was wondering about the dress code for nonbinary skaters. i looked into the dress code and found that men are required to wear full length pants and women are not, but i was curious as to whether nonbinary skaters would be required to wear full length pants, or whether it would depend on their agab? other people on the internet mentioned competing “as” a specific gender even if they arent that one. what are your thoughts on this topic?

    • @MindfulBanter
      @MindfulBanter 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oooh I might have to make a video about this. Right now you can't "formally" be a nonbinary gender in competitive skating so you do kiiinda have to pick one (don't get me started 😅). But ideally we just wouldn't have these archaic dress codes, which is what I would think would be the first thing to happen in the grand scheme of progress, at least for singles skating. But skating has such an ingrained culture that folks wouldn't break the mold for a while even after a policy update, which we've already seen in women who can now perform in pants/pantsuits or dresses.

    @MindfulBanter, I noticed you are at the Capitals IcePlex in this video. Living in an area of Virginia without a rink, at least a year round one, I am considering this particular rink for a "home" rink. Can you tell me more about your experiences with the Iceplex?

    • @MindfulBanter
      @MindfulBanter ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a nice rink! The facilities staff are about as friendly as any other rink I've been to, and there are a fair amount of sessions to skate. If you need anything after 5 on a weekday it might be tough since those are more sporadic. I'm taking a break from lessons so I don't have experience with any of the coaches but folks are friendly

    • @bradleyolinger1691
      @bradleyolinger1691 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MindfulBanter , I have to travel four to five hours to get to DC(most convenient option is DC, closest rinks are 3 hours but harder to get to since I don't drive and they aren't near transit lines). Before 5pm is actually more convenient for me because of that. I'm just starting to learn, though, and want to get through Adult 1 ahead of the seasonal rink here opening.

  • @bradleyolinger1691
    @bradleyolinger1691 ปีที่แล้ว

    @MindfulBanter, this was very helpful. I am very nervous about buying inexpensive beginner skates from all brands, due both to my weight(which is a bit on the heavy side, at 300 lb) and not wanting to buy another pair in a year due to financial concerns. I'm planning to budget about $400-$500 max, so I have options. I also have issues with ingrown nails, so I need a wider/stretched toe box. Hopefully, I can find a good balance at my first fitting next month.

    I wish that people would just look at each other as people (living souls) rather than putting identity tags on each other. Think about how boring this world would be if everyone looked the same, etc., which in a way is what they are trying to move us toward. There is too much sensitivity toward offending people. It has gone overboard. It is one thing if someone is outwardly and maliciously trying to offend someone. It doesn't "feel" good and isn't good manners. However, in reality you have to assess what the real damage is. People need to get out of their 'little worlds' and look at the big picture. There are good people and there are bad people. There are rich people and there are poor people, etc., etc. I understand that "white people" seem or are perceived to have been the ones in control of the whole world and many aspects of it. However, that isn't exactly true when you examine history over the centuries in countries around the world. However, if you currently happen to be one of those "non-white" people, in the world and you are outside of your original country culture, you will find that irregardless, it comes down to "human nature." Also, if you really examined your original country culture, even there, you will find the discrepancies of "the human creature." People are people and they are imperfect. Some think that they are better than everyone else and others feel that they will never be good enough. We are put on this earth for an 'experience.' Yes, it seems that skating has been dominated by the "white race" for a long time. However, regardless, when you are a competitor, you realize that the judges have your fate in their hands. You can only do what you can do and wait for the results. People take a lot of things too seriously. A lot of what they think is so important, isn't really as important as they think it is in the scheme of things. Life goes on. People should be able to express their own individuality or interpretation of whatever they choose as long as it does not physically hurt another person or cause that person to be hurt by others. People need to get out of their "mindsets and belief systems (which they are taught) and realize that everything is not about them and having everyone yield to what they have chosen to call themselves, believe, or pay attention to. Art and artistic impression is all about individuality. To deny that is censorship. And there is too much censorship going on right now. If you want to skate, skate or choreograph for yourself or student and stop worrying about other people. Be courteous, however, don't expect people to automatically be friendly to you. Most of the time, it has nothing to do with you or your race at all, it is that person. I'm not saying that there is not bias. Rink atmospheres will vary depending on the type of people there and the activities. I remember a lot of jealousy, competitiveness, and cattiness (who your coach was, how you dressed, how well you skated, fat or skinny) growing up in the rinks. Adult skaters were shut out for years by the 'younger skater mentality.' If you were over 21, you were considered over the hill in terms of competing. And that wasn't too long ago. Now you see competitors up to 40 in the elite competitions and now they also have the adult competition category. Also, look at all of the Asians currently dominating the top spots in competitions. Don't let yourself be held back because of your belief systems. And they are ingrained in all of us from birth . And some have to overcome more than others to realize themselves. You can't please everyone, so stop trying and just be who you are.

    • @MindfulBanter
      @MindfulBanter ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your comment, but it's a little disingenuous to essentially wave away the impact of centuries of imperialism by European countries that manufactured whiteness, weaponized it to cast entire swaths of people, attempted to stamp out their culture, and then took the land/pieces of culture for their own use. No one is striving to please other people, it's about mutual human respect that while you may have for others, is not a universal notion. If you don't have the lived experience or have taken the time to listen to those who have, you have no authority to say whether something is happening or not. The US and Canada are large enough as is.

    Wishing you the best moving forward! <3 Are you still going to be skating for fun or are you looking for a new sport? I also used to skate but moved to adult ballet and felt like I fit in much better there. The studio I'm at is super welcoming and there are many POC and queer folk. I'm in a class with a trans man and he was casted in really fun male parts in the recent show. It's a pre-professional school so it's nice being treated seriously even though I'm an adult and getting to perform in Nutcracker and Coppelia recently was so fun!

      I do admit the majority of our kids classes are predominantly white or Asian, but when it comes to the adult classes there is much more obvious diversity in ethnicity, ages, body shapes, dancing experience etc. We all get our asses kicked equally by our teacher's combinations though haha. I also supplement with the kids classes and feel very welcomed there too!

    stumbled upon your videos because I couldn't find any official vids of the Adult Learn to Skate skills, I live in Asia and have just started learning figure skating in my 40s (I also learned tennis in my 30s so I think its par for the course!), gymnastics, ballet and figure skating are stuff that I grew up really loving to watch but never had parents interested in helping (no tiger parents here) me get into lessons. So as a much more confident adult in my 30s I started learning all the things I had always wanted to learn haha Anyways, ISIAsia seem to only have grades for children and I felt like it would take forever to advance a grade so I took to the internet and found both the US Learn to Skate for Adults and Skate UK's Levels for Adults. They both seem much much more reasonable and encouraging =D

    Nice review! Jackson Ultima makes a major mistake calling the edges "tapered". They are actually flared, which is the opposite of tapered. The blades flare outward toward the bottom instead of tapering narrower (just like different styles of pants). "Side honed" is another term that is used for this. My Gold Seals are side honed (flared) for more ice bite when leaning on an edge. I'm trying to figure out if these blades have a Gold Seal rocker profile (rounder right behind the bottom pick) or a Pattern 99 profile (flatter/more gradual spin rocker). I cannot spin on my Dynasty synchro blades because they have a Pattern 99 profile and I just can't find the sweet spot. I'm used to Gold Seals and before those, Gold Stars.

    Ayyy theatre on ice! I love theatre on ice because it feels like fewer people feel the need to get all UP in my gender.

    So I've been skating in my jackson artises got about a year or so. In that year I passed pre pre lim mifs, prelim dances and going to pass pre bronze soon. I've also competed solo dance in them. Do you think the edges are able to be really deep on this boot/blade? Or is it holding me back? Thanks!

      Ehh you don't need super deep edges until silver/pre-gold dances, but I'd argue you could benefit from a lower cut boot.

      @Mindful Banter one more question if you don't mind. In solo dance competition, an edge doesn't count unless its deep. Do you think the blade isn't letting me get deep enough? I noticed everyone else had dance blades.

      Possibly, but it could also be your technique. Do you feel like you get enough knee bend to deepen your edge? Obviously, if you're gonna replace the boot, I'd upgrade the whole setup

      @@MindfulBanter don't think so. Passed all prelim dances with honors with those skates. I have a feeling that these skates weren't meant to tip as far as I need them to 😬

      @MindfulBanter ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely not if you're passing tests with honors 😅 Might be time to upgrade!

    I currently wear Risport Antares and will compete in adult pre bronze next year (but I do single jumps in artistic too). I need to change them because they were not new when I bought them, but my caoches said Risport cut at the heel are really high compared to other. But a tech advises me Electra, and I thought about RF3.
