Quick Tour of Karuizawa and Kusatsu Onsen. Tattoo Friendly Onsen Town!
Sushi Diaries Episode 9
About an hour away from Tokyo Station is Karuizawa which is a popular town famous for its ski resorts, outlet mall, and many relaxing hotels. The town is also famous for its coffee and pastry shops which was influenced by Europeans. Another hour bus ride north of Karuizawa is Kusatsu Onsen, which is one of the most popular onsen town in Japan for domestic and international tourists.
This video is a bit of a "vlog style" while also introducing some of the several places I visited in both towns.

Thank you for the video you made my trip easier ❤
I am glad that my video helped make your trip easier and hopefully more enjoyable.
Worst airline to travel to India never travel again with them
Cozy
Thank you for this. May I ask what season this was filmed in? I would like to go in February, I think that is a good time for snow and onsen right?
Thank you! I filmed in January 2024 which was a perfect time to see snow and enjoy onsen at the same time. Winter 2024 saw record low snowfall in parts of Japan because it was so warm, so I was lucky to see that much snow. February should be a good time to see snow given it is middle of winter.
Thank you so very much. This was such an amazing video and so in keeping with the character of you and your work 🙏🏾
hey i was wondering if the price on the menu is per person or just that set thanks
Hello, It is per person. It does make it pricey if you have a family or a group.
Amazing presentation. I particularly appreciate your confident narration. Thank you for your amazing work 🙏🏾
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
thank you! 🇨🇦
Nice room tour! Looks like a good hotel to stay at with all the surrounding amenities & distance from train station
Thanks! It is a really relaxing hotel and super quiet too.
Would you say this is a budget hotel?
naw wouldn't say it is a budget hotel but definitely an affordable luxury
Well done! Thanks!
those dead trees are still there 3 years later
I'll be in Tokyo in late November 2024. 6 nights in total including a day trip to Hakone. I feel it is very short trip but as a first timer to Tokyo I feel just nice. What do you think?
Hello! I think it is more than enough time. Tbh you will never finish seeing everything in Tokyo since there's so much to explore. Hakone is also a good day trip, as you can do the loop back to Tokyo within one day. As noted in the video, taking the Yamanote Line gets you to most landmarks, or at least a quick transfer to other train or subway lines. Late November can't come quickly enough!
having taken this train several times in my youth Im looking forward to the next couple weeks when I'll be in my first cabin trip. views and experiences are amazing .
You read my mind ! Would love to lay down and watch the video , best video ever , looking forward to get my tickets. Tks !!!
Thank you for watching the video! I hope you have an amazing journey!
@@village_mayor I will tks from Boston
Great video! I was in Tokyo in 2017 and aside from the brutal heat wave, I really liked it there. Quick question for you, my passport is good for 10 years from the date It was issued (2017). Have they changed requirements on passports since covid? What did you find is different in airport experience between pre covid and now? Thanks.
Thanks! You should go back to Japan. All covid requirements were removed May 2023, but because of the surge in tourism, the wait times at the airport is still around 30 mins but not the 3-4 hours like it was a year ago. You do have to register with the Visit Japan Web which makes the process easier before travelling. I saw people scrambling to register at customs. You can still submit the disembarkation form like you did back in 2017 however.
Waow Amazing
I stayed here in 2018/19 and I loved the place, accessibility to Narita and the Sky Tree. They offer buffet breakfast during the time I stayed here and which I have enjoyed so much. They also have room service (order food and they bring that to your room). Hope that when I come back to this hotel they revived the restaurant.
How was the buffet breakfast at the time? I heard reviews that it was really good. I bet it was even better with the interior design. Same, I hope they revive the restaurant. I just came back from Japan a few weeks ago, and pretty much all hotels have revived their breakfasts.
Sorry late reply, it was very good. I like eating breakfast in this interior.
kids would just love this trip imagine leaving Montreal and you end up at the ocean in Halifax the cabins are fun for kids.
So true! And the mud flats on the Bay of Fundy side (if it is the right time). To see mud so thick and deep!
everyone should go on a train trip and Halifax is a beautiful city and so is Montreal its a must
Sadly my trip to Montreal was delayed by 2 hours. I was planning to see Downtown Montreal at least before heading to Toronto. Such a bummer
The hotel was just perfect for us. Clean, quiet and the staff was very friendly. We will come back next year, highly recommend this place.
That's great! Happy that your experience with the hotel was as good as mine.
Thank you for this informative video. Im just wondering if can we pay cash on the bus upon riding?
Thanks for watching the video, yes exact change is needed, the bus driver won't give you change.
Really appreciate this. Booked to stay here for my upcoming trip in October. Looks pretty good. Paying USD 305 per night 🙄🥹. Love the convenience to Tokyo station as I’ll be heading to Osaka and Tokyo. Whew. Ok so far so good. I can still cancel hahaha (due to $$) but this is helpful. Just what I needed. Thaaaank you.
Thank you for your kind words. I do like the free cancellation of some booking sites, in case you change your mind. Hope you have an amazing trip, it is less than a month!!
Which room was this? The deluxe king?
Yes it was the deluxe king room
@@village_mayor thank you! Excited to stay there next month 🎉
@@babybeem8530 awesome! I hope you have a great stay!
I take the ocean train every year in the summer from Montreal to Halifax to visit my mother who lives in Nova Scotia. I've always done it in coach. It is so hard in coach
Prices do jump when there isn't a sale, and coach is popular too. But yeah you don't get the meals, but people bring lots of food to last 24 hours.
@@village_mayor and they also have the food cart that comes around kind of like the airplane servers. It's not the best food but it's okay

awesome review, you know if all the rooms has that kind of views?
Thanks for your feedback. Not all of the rooms have "landmark" views, and it is hard to figure out which rooms give you views unless you read each room's description in the website. Generally, the smaller rooms faces a courtyard and not have views. Prices reflect the views and it is worth it if you have two or more people. But hope you get to stay in this hotel.
Its awesome that cities like Halifax has a reliable public transportation service. Its saves real money to people. There is no need to pay car insurance, maintenance etc .
It really helps too that the downtown is so walkable and there are a lot of historic buildings and parks to visit.
Halifax don't have reliable transit first off a 20 min drive turns into a 1 hour bus ride and the airport bus sucks if ya live in Sackville you have to bus all the way into town just to come back through because there's no stops around for that bus
The very last comment regarding the distance to the airport as justification of not building a railway link makes no sense. For example, the city of Strasbourg in France has comparable to Halifax population, its airport is 17 km away from the city and yet it has a train link to the airport that run 5 times per hour. It’s what you build.
Thank you for this review. We're doing the Montreal - Narita route in Nov/Dec.
No problem! Hope you have an amazing trip!
I didn't travel like these
You were saying that you can't access the Maple Leaf lounge under Premium but the AC website says you could if you paid $49, Did you try that?
I did not which is a great suggestion. I would definitely give that a try at Pearson given there isn't much to do at all. But at the Tokyo airports I wouldn't as there is so much shopping and eating before boarding.
Fantastic Video 👍
thank you!
I love the details with this video! Have you ever taken the Canadian towards Vancouver?
thank you so much! I didn't want to produce a video that just promoted The Ocean. I would let the viewer be the judge. I would love to take The Canadian. Funny enough I was looking at prices on Friday. I might have to save some money for that.
@@village_mayorthe intro and the fast facts were interesting. I liked the details about the Ocean train itself not simply as a tour but also where to find the dining cars, what's included and the different classes. Haven't seen this much detail in Canadian train videos so far and I love it!
Thank you so very much. We'll be taking this trip in October on a 777 from Toronto to Haneda and hoping for a similar experience.
I hope so too! My flight was on a 787 so a smaller plane. Premium Economy would be a good way fy and not be crowded in the back. And flying to Haneda is so much more convenient. Hope you have a good trip!
@@village_mayor Thanks so much. Really looking forward to it. Yes that was our biggest reason for making the change ... The smaller number of seats in that class. I can't afford business class, can't even afford to bid since their lowest bid is now $650 per passenger.
@@pegasusnites Premium economy is the best value. I've done the bidding before and won, I had to pay a lot and always regret lol. You get lounge access which is useful for Pearson given how it sucks. But Haneda there are so many restaurants you don't want to be cooped up in a lounge. The flatbed and meals are nice but unless you can win with the lowest bid, I would use that money for shopping or eating. Seats in PE is comfy enough anyway, and yes, fewer seats within that segment or class is very useful.
*promosm* 👇
Having watched videos of long haul Premium Economy flights on other airlines, (EVA, Korean, Singapore, British Airways) I must say AC seems to be a level below these others. In Amenities, Comfort, Storage, and particularly Food service/Quality. I am travelling YYC/LHR in PE in about a month, and can only hope the extra cost turns out to be worth it. I have my doubts, having watched this today.
I agree with you, there is a reason why JAL and Singapore airlines are consistently the top airlines in the world, and AC is... not. I guess none of the trip reports you see re: AC would give a good rating if we always compare with JAL or ANA all the time lol.
Very detailed and informative walkthrough! For someone who enjoys taking photos and doing timelapses, I can definitely see the appeal - particularly from that first window's view. I wanted to ask, was there a specific dish from their breakfast that you particularly enjoyed? Was the food brought up to you? Or did you have to go down to eat it in a common area?
Thank you! Breakfast is served in a small dining area next to the lobby. The entire meal was delicious, but I have a soft spot for simmered konnyaku and they did an amazing job.
its a beautifull place, already missing it
I miss Tokyo too! Was great to do these videos, reminds me of my recent trip
I like the plug for simply railway. I love all the train videos. Keep up the great work.
Thank you very much!
You do get a priority security area with Premium Economy if you go to Aisle 1 in Pearson. That aisle is not just for business class or Star Alliance Gold. Aisle 3 can be used for check-in but Aisle 1 is the way to go. It keeps you away from the riff-raff. hehehe
I actually did go through Aisle 1 because the sign says Premium Economy. However, they turned down a PE passenger from checking in (the guy sat in front of me on the plane), and had to go to Aisle 3. I played dumb but luckily she allowed me to check in and drop off my luggage. So I'm confused whether PE is still allowed to go through Aisle 1 or not.
@@village_mayor You did not have to play dumb. As you mention the sign does say PE. Some Air Canada staff can be snotty. I agree about the food. I flew YYZ to ICN in January. Same food stuff. I also remember not seeing a flight attendant coming thru the cabin to offer water during the flight. Even ANA or Asiana comes thru the economy cabins to offer water.
@@marshallrichmond4909 I know right! If they said to go to Aisle 3 I would then say to remove the sign in the front, because it is misleading. If the rules change, then change the sign. After making the video however, I noticed a lot of other airlines offer ice cream. Not like AC offering brownies every single time.
Nice video, I love it! Is there a reason why some economy class passengers are seated in BUDD at the beginning of the train and some are seated in the Renaissance cars? I’m wondering if it has to do with the passengers destination or if you are a solo traveller or travelling with a plus one as the configuration is 2 seats together throughout the whole car.
Thank you! I am not sure why there has to be a logistical reason. The former observation car was probably a Renaissance car and that was located at the very back of the train, so they never bothered to reconfigure the cars. I was fine with it, as long as the dining car was within close walking distance.
Great video. Does the last row of PE recline as much as rows 12 and 13? We are planning a trip from YYZ-ATH and know we don’t want row 12. Was your seat comfortable for sleeping?
Thank you so much! Yes it does recline as much as the last row (my parents also flew PE and sat on in the middle rows and last row on different flights). I normally don't sleep on the flight but it was more comfortable as there was more legroom and the seat was wider. You can also recline without disrupting someone behind you. The only thing (and is standard on any airline I think) is the arm rest does not flip up because the trays are stowed there, as well as little cubby spaces for the water bottle.
Absolutely awful airline with ridiculously high prices . I was looking into a one-way ticket from GRU to YYZ for this month . Three days ago, the price was $805 ,still a steep price to pay for Economy one-way. Then all of a sudden , price skyrocketed to $1879 !!!! Absolutely preposterous, especially considering prices of the competition. I ended up purchasing a ticket with Copa ,a much better airline, for $749 .
I agree with you, prices have been so ridiculous in 2023. The same flight, same meals, same service but tickets went from $1300 round trip to $2000. The excuse has always been fuel prices and lack of staff. And yes, other airlines are better. Case in point, other airlines have ice cream in economy class, but AC doesn't. Sounds whiny, but if I am paying that much to fly, at least offer ice cream like other airlines do, and not the standard brownie.
Although I flew economy there, it was a good flight. The return trip will be different as I will fly in Business Class
I flew Business Class back to Toronto, and it is a world of a difference. But you also pay more as well. I hope your experience on Business Class will be great!
enjoyed it thank you
Thank you!
Fun fact: you can save on fare if you're a CAA member.
Air Canada service really poor and plus you can only check one piece luggage for trans pacific flight!
I absolutely do disagree with you. And in some trans-Atlantic flights you have to pay for any checked luggage. And with the fares much more expensive than pre-Covid. I am not happy about as there isn't much rationale for it. There are other alternatives such as AA or Delta for much cheaper. This flight is direct which is a price I hav to pay for. But the experience I had was still pretty decent. Worth it? that is a personal decision.
I did also flew to NRT from YVR just about 3 days before you posted this video. Although I flew economy there, it was a good flight. The return trip will be different as I will fly in Business Class.
How is Tokyo? Even though I was there a month ago, I've been missing Japan a lot. I flew Business Class coming back, it was pretty nice. Make sure you visit the ANA lounge, and also check if there are any delays via text or email. My flight's departure was delayed by an hour so I got to spend more time in the lounge.
