Good luck. I am too far north to attend. I will need to go to a Subbuteo fair at some stage.
👍 fingers crossed 🤞, the fair’s are a good place to add to a collection, a lot less hassle than eBay!
Thanks for looking at the video. Just a sneak preview of what I’m going to put on sale Saturday up at Leicester. Nothing spectacular but all the teams and most of the box's are in excellent condition, no rattlers, no painted numbers etc. Maybe see some of you there. Cheers Dean.
Are you replaying 1970s division 1? It would be great if you replayed all the matches, with the like of Eric Gates (Ipswich), Mickey Thomas (Man U) etc.
@@marcj3682 I did play out a 1970’s league that covered a lot of the big teams of the decade. It was quite a labour of love! So for a bit of variety I’ve decided to play out the first World Cup I can remember. 1974 I was a 9 year old boy taking as much of it as I could back in the day! So that’s my next project which I’m due to kick off shortly 👍
È bello rivederti amico. Ben tornato!
Grazie mille 👍
Same with me first World Cup was 1970, I remember the Czech v England, England played in all light blue. Great semi final Italy v West Germany, fantastic teams plus had the sticker book. Stuff.
@@ianpatterson123 I would have liked to have been old enough to remember this World Cup. Especially the Brazilian team. I’ve seen games on TH-cam, West Germany did a job on England. Brazil were far too good for anyone though.
@ yes Brazil were a different class. I remember being allowed to stay up to see all the final and trophy presentation. Watching live football on to was so rare then, FA cup final, home internationals and the World Cup. I recently painted the Italy & West Germany teams from the semi final in Santiago HWs to play the match in Subbuteo.
@ yes, live football on TV was special back in the day. And there you have the great thing about Subbuteo, you can recreate those games in your own home.
subbuteo i played 30 years ago but subbuteo cricket never heard of it thx for showing this
@@aussiedevil3465 glad you liked the video, a very playable and enjoyable game. I had a set back in the day but the wicket didn’t play well on a shag pile carpet! Much better on a table 🏏👍
Hi Dean, nice to see you back. I reckon we are a similar vintage. My first world cup was 70. I particularly remember watching England v Czech for some reason. Then i went out and replayed it on the garden with my wembley trophy ball. 74 was a great world cup. Youll have to practice your spining if you are going to recreate the Cruyff turn. Please correct the travesty that was the final, bl**dy Gerd Muller spoiled the perfect end. Will you bend the subbuteo rules to let the zaire defender kick the ball away against Brazil? Keep flicking.
@@robinma2000 thanks Mark, yes I think we are a similar vintage I’m the big 60 next year 😁. The 1970 World Cup I was a bit young so 74 was my first real World Cup, remember the final well. Cruyff et el were magnificent up to the final, then blew it against the efficient and unspectacular Germans. I had a Wembley trophy ball, who didn’t back then, lol. I’ll need plenty of practice, haven’t played for a while, not sure about reproducing the Cruyff turn 😁. Let’s see how I go!
Good to see you back, wondered where you had gone.
Thanks Mike, yes been a busy couple of months.
Great to see you back. Very coincidentally I have a spare Haiti hw team I’m probably going to part with and will be selling at Leicester Foxes on the 23rd. Maybe we can do some swaps as I’m a heavyweight collector
GREAT to hear you surviving lifes challenges. New project sounds really good. I avoid the collectors fairs tbh. Too many of the clique who hijacked Subbuteo for their own corrupt agenda of butchering the original game with this 'WASPA New rules crap .
Cheers 👍 life can be like that at times you have to roll with it and hope things turn out ok. On the collectors fair front I’ve only been to one other which was at the same club and it was very good. Nice guys and not looking to rip you off. So would take it the next one will be similar. And being a casual/non competitive player I don’t get too embroiled with the competitive rules as you’ll have seen from my videos, lol.
Great to see you back....oh yes life gets in the way glad to here you got a new job allways a thumbs up as usual.👍
Thanks Paul, it’s been quite a couple of months! I nearly hit the retirement button, 😁 But hopefully I’ll be back up to speed very soon 👍
Thanks for looking in at the video, just a quick update of what’s coming in the near future! Cheers Dean 👍
Tried to add a comment about an hour ago Dean, thought I'd posted but it vanished. Anyway, glad to hear you sorted yourself out with another job mate - stressful times!! Looking forward to World Cup 74! In terms of the teams you need, I'd have a look at some Top Spin versions, you can pick them up for £17 each - I think for Haiti and Zaire, you'll be looking at paying £80-£100+ each as they are quite collectable. The Top Spin teams look as near as damn it the same as the Subbuteo heavyweights. Leicester Subbuteo fair sounds brilliant, if I hadn't broken my leg I'd be there and come and have a chat (did I tell you about my accident?) Anyway, all the best mate!
Thanks Darren, yes it’s been a challenging couple of months. Dealing with the DWP was surprisingly easy and just as I was considering early retirement I got a job! So can’t complain. And no soon as I posted the video I got myself sorted with an Haiti! So just Zaire and Bulgaria required, maybe I’ll have some luck at the collectors fair! So mainly selling but I’ll keep an eye out before the general public are let in 😊. The alternative will be one of the other player types if I draw a blank. It would have been great to have a catch up, how did the leg break come about?
@@SubbuteoFocus I've emailed you about it mate.
@@SubbuteoFocus Haiti's a great looking team. I used to own it, back in the day (ref. 175 if I remember correctly)
@ yes #175, I like the red black combo although in a couple of the 1974 games they wore Red shirts and white shorts and socks!
I played with 1994 us champ John Schulz and he used turtle wax furniture polish way better. I used pledge with my Brazilian players. It was adequate.
That must have been some game, what was the score? Wax furniture polish is a great shout, I’ll have to get some and give it a try. Be interesting to see the comparison 👍
No he killed me 11-0. I tied one of his cousins. Want to play again.
@@jamesdickey5407 👍, That’s the thing, I like to play to recreate games in a non competitive way. I wouldn’t want to play competitively, I know I’d get hammered 😁. Watching some of the tournament players brings home how quick and accurately they play.
@@SubbuteoFocus yes the USA has Denver and Metro dc for fistif. St Louis is the closest and they play their own rules at this bar . Which is impressive but not competitive. I just want to play solo to eventually build my skills. The st.louis video might be still on you tube.
@@jamesdickey5407 great stuff and great to know Subbuteo is alive and kicking in the US 👍
Can the new bases play good on cotton outch
I meant nylon
@@jamesdickey5407 I think the new bases would work well on all surfaces due to their increased surface area. However I haven’t given them a try so can’t be 100% certain. But a well polished player I would guess would slide well on a nylon pitch, however the issue might be the ball control. In my example in the video the slide wasn’t too bad it was judging the speed of the ball contact that was the problem. I would take it that it would be similar on the newer bases.
Some great stuff there ,and nice that Pinky and Perky appreciated the pitches !😊
@@stevehall5299 yes, got a decent buy there. You never know exactly how good a shape stuff will be in until you get it in your hands!
@@SubbuteoFocus well it all looked good, you can't have too much equipment!
Big Tam Forsyth was called a clydesdale 🐎 by Tommy Doc,but he was faster than a mustang when he stopped Channon in a vital challenge !
@@stevehall5299 He must have been a good player to get into that team, but I’m guessing not a household name like most of a very good Scottish team.
@SubbuteoFocus well I guess he was a bit of an unsung hero to be fair
Great video thanks!!
Thank you, glad you liked it 👍
Merci pour ce reportage. J'ai un jeu de cricket, Subbuteo il me semble, mais qui n'utilise pas ce système. Un Français qui aime le cricket.
Thank you for viewing the video, great to know there are Cricket fans in France 🏏👍
Test match game
Great video, with some nice rule adaptions which I'll 'borrow'. Must try cutting down the size of the wicket bases 👍
@@Benjamin00720 thank you, that’s the beauty of the game as well, some house rules really enhance the game. Have a look on some of the Facebook groups, you can get some really good house rule ideas from those. And yes cutting the base down helps with keeping the bails on if you use them. The original base is a bit cumbersome and one hit anywhere on it and the bails fly! Well worth cutting down 👍
Love this. Have a Test Match set tucked away. Inspuredme to blow the dust off and have a game
@@Benjamin00720 great stuff, not easy to play to start with but like everything, the more you play the better you get. Great fun though and very underrated compared to the football and very playable 🏏👍
I had a game called Test Match when I was growing up. It was far better than the Subbuteo one here. It was the best thing I ever owned. Does anyone remember it?
I remember it, not as detailed and not as many add ons as Subbuteo but very playable. Not easy to play solo either but a great game all in all.
Yup. The batsman had a string and the bowler had a ramp. it was a big Octogon felt field. great fun. A small ball bearing was the ball.
Fantastic
@@JonnieKid thank you 👍
The astro pitch will play faster if the air is dry opposed to damp or humid.
I also found that in warm conditions the Astro started to warp in places but settled down when it got cooler. I think the plastic back to the pitch reacts too easily with temperature changes.
Being born in 1953, so playing my Subbuteo in the early 1960's, we had the cotton/felt pitch and always my favourite. All us lads had our pitch on a piece of chipboard and it worked perfectly.
@@barrybradshaw675 great stuff Barry, my first set would have been early 70’s and I played on the carpet. First time I played on a table was at a mates house. I so wanted a table with a fence around it, just like his 😁. Didn’t get a pitch on a board until the 1990’s. It’s the one I still have, although the set up I have now has changed quite a bit since getting back into Subbuteo during the pandemic.
@@SubbuteoFocus Thanks for your reply. Although I don't play now I still collect Subbuteo having sets like 'The World of Sport' boxed set 'Munich' boxed set numerous 'World Cup' boxed sets and numerous boxed sets of heavyweight players, tracksuit teams and so on. I still have my Spurs early 1960's heavyweight team that I would use as my team to play with as a kid. Remarkable, as my Mother was on a mission to give away all my childhood toys LOL. When I was about 11/12 Subbuteo was so popular there were leagues everywhere and me and my mates had on own league, playing home and away at each other's houses. Ahhh....those were the days. Enjoy your Subbuteo.
@@barrybradshaw675 sounds like you have some collection there Barry. My only box sets from back in the day were the Stadium edition and the Test match cricket box set. It’s all about the nostalgia for me and remembering those days when I was kid 👍
@@SubbuteoFocus Yes I also have some Stadium sets and a few editions of the cricket boxed set. Yes, I'm sure it's nostalgia that still drives me on to collect Subbuteo although they are only really Museum pieces in my collection but I love owning them. Cheers
Best surface is a plywood base with four or five cotton pitches on top of one another and heavily ironed. Perfect.
Phil, that would be interesting, four or five pitches might be a bit springy! But it might be great, I haven’t got that many pitches to try it!
Where can I get this please and how much does it cost? Love the vids❤also on a budget
Thank you Jacob 👍 the items I got off eBay. Price wise you can normally get a full box set between £35-50. Or you could buy the items separately but that may cost a little more. Although that wouldn’t include the stands and spectators. Each stand would set you back around £15 on average, spectators around £10 per stand. Hope that helps 👍
@@SubbuteoFocusthanks so much!
Good to see. Do you overlay your pitches or take them out for each sport? On the rules, if you're a member of the FB rugby group, I have a guide on how to play League and Union, Also many rugby and cricket videos on my YT channel
Yes, I have an Astro pitch which I place the cricket and rugby pitches on top. I find the cotton pitches generally flatten out very nicely on top. I will definitely check out your rugby videos be interesting to see them. I’ve read through the official rules and instructions so be looking to see how easy it is to follow them! I’ll check out the fb rugby group as well 👍
Rugby looks really good in your stadium. 🏉👍
Thanks Dave 👍
I know you like your attention to detail (eg. boundary cricket rope). Have you thought about foam protectors around the bases of the rugby posts.
@@jonathanwoodard6147 that’s an interesting idea, not sure what I could use, I’d have to have a think about that 👍
My entire table football setup is handmade, and for the goals I used a nylon tulle mesh fabric, which you can get in rolls from any fabrics or crafts shop for the netting. It also comes in a variety of colours.
That sounds great, I don’t really have the skills to pull something like that off. I can just about manage what you saw in the video. But it would be satisfying knowing that you’re playing on something you made yourself, fair play 👍
@@SubbuteoFocus I've been a DIY kind of guy for a while now, and I've long been fascinated with the game watching and reading about it online. But with money being tight I couldn't afford to get the "pro" equipment. One day several years ago I ran across an Italian website on Alta Vista made by this guy who made his own Subbuteo setup using 2L soda caps mounting cardboard flats, a hand-marked fabric pitch, homemade goals, and folded paper balls (forming a truncated icsohedron, which is what the Telstar match ball is based on) weighted with crumpled kitchen towel strips and it inspired me. I'm never going to be joining any FISTF-affiliated Subbuteo group or tournament so I don't have to care about homologation of the equipment. The website vanished along with Alta Vista but I was smart enough to make English-translated .pdf copies of the pages while it was still up and running for just such an eventuality. The way I figure it, I can create my own table football empire with as many teams as I like for less than U.S. $50 using mostly recycled or upcycled materials and yes have the immense satisfaction of playing on something made by my own hand.
The '67 Advanced Rules allowed only three blocking flicks for each offensive possession, restored to the full count only if the attacker passes backwards. That scheme could work for solo Subbuteo, though the modern solo rules say you can dispense with blocking flicks altogether, which is how most solo players run their matches. Matter of individual player choice. The predecessor game to Subbuteo, Newfooty, made no provision at all for defensive blocking flicks in its rules. As an experiment, you should try playing a match on a marked-out army wool blanket, which is what Subbuteo was originally designed to be played on, and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks for that info, for me as a solo player I find blocking flicks slow the game down too much. So for me to keep the game moving quicker I only have a blocking flick when I’m about to shoot. And that blocking flick can’t be between the shooting player and the ball. Using the marked army blanket would be hard to play on I would imagine. We’re spoilt a bit with the pitches we have but I’m pleased that we do. Not having a consistent run of the player would be frustrating which I guess might happen on the old army blanket. 👍
them grey stands look amazing. where did you source them from?
Cheers 👍 just been adding them over a period of time. All off eBay and quite varying in price. I don’t think I’ll be adding anymore though. I like the look of it now and it works practically so that might be the finished look.
Get stadium set up. Very envious!
@@Benjamin00720 cheers 👍, took a bit of time, patience and money but happy with how it’s finished up. Not sure if I’ll make anymore changes though!
Glad you are building your following. I had Subbuteo Rugby as a kid. I don't have fond memories, the rules were unfathomable and the ball was unplayable. And too many out-of-scale features like the scrum machine and the giant kickers
But stadium looks tip-top
Thank you 👍
Yes, I think this next video will be a bit of a challenge. Fingers crossed it might be watched by players who have their own house rules like we do for the football and cricket that they can share.
Blimey! The rugby fencing. Incredibly hard to get hold of! 👏👏
Yes managed to get it from eBay. Paid a bit for it but was worth it 👍
It looks great with new stadium set up can't wait to hear about the rules I love rugby but subbuteo rugby looks confusing 😊
Thank you Paul 👍 it does look confusing to me as well so will be interesting to see how I interpret the rules!
got a brown fence too!! 👍
Yes I was pleased to get hold of it 👍
Great job Dean. Who did the music - so relaxing!
Thanks Darren, the music was off iMovies, sometimes they have copyrights on them but this one didn’t.
The last one you'll be pleased to hear and see! The next video will be a run through of the Rugby rules using the official rules and instructions. No doubt it will raise more questions than answers as I've never really played it before! Anyway I hope you enjoy this final video in this series!
I Think the ground looks more suited to football ⚽ and Rugby 🏉 now rather than cricket.🏏
It does to a certain degree Dave but I think having grey terracing keeps it in line with cricket. It looks less suited to the Rugby which I’ll be doing a video for shortly.
@@SubbuteoFocus Hope to see you having a go at the Rugby.🏉 Good luck on passing the ball backwards. Rules will need adjusting.
Funnily enough I was going to record a game following the Rugby rules, should be interesting 🫣
@@SubbuteoFocus Have a strong drink ready as you will need it playing subbuteo rules.😂

Looks good, I like that you have left the corners open.
Thanks Mike, yes I think having the corners with TV towers, scoreboard and trees makes it a bit different. With corner sections it might have looked a bit too clinical and character less.
Thats really nice

Good looking ground Dean. I liked the original but this is more aesthetically pleasing. 👏 .
@@DavidPudney-jr4pl thanks David, I can’t see me changing it again in the short term. It sort of works now for Cricket, Football and Rugby, which is where I wanted it to be 👍
@SubbuteoFocus yes I can see the options with that set up and definitely easier to get those pitch level videos and photos, I would imagine. Like most collections, especially if they're usable, they evolve and you've hit the mark here. I enjoyed the tour 👍.
@DavidPudney-jr4pl thanks David 👍
Need to have forest in all yellow away kit
@@armchairdetective1214 unfortunately I haven’t got that in my collection. And the all yellow team which I think is #68 is always too expensive when it comes up on eBay. But would have liked to have it!
Really like the touch of the clock on the Grandstand and the non subbuteo floodlights which really suit the cricket stadium.
Thank you 👍, yes the clock is just about an ok size. I’ve done a video of the football set up which I’ll be uploading in the next couple of days. It doesn’t look too bad but I think the grey suits the Cricket best. I’ve set up the Rugby ready to video as well and I must say I think the tan terracing would probably look better. But I won’t be doing a tan version 😁
Excellent
@@armchairdetective1214 👍
Looks superb Dean. 3 stands and then the rest terraced is the perfect balance.
@@soitra thanks Darren, I can’t do a 4th stand opposite as it would stop me being able to play cricket from that other side. Just about manage to reach over a single terrace. That’s probably it for a bit.
