    • @sharonhavily
      @sharonhavily 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We had two elective courses, so you can choose from there. However when looking at jobs, they may take your elective courses into consideration but you'll likely need more practice experience before specializing. My program also had the option to write a research paper instead of the two electives. I did not choose that route, but you get to work closely with a professor and build connections with the OT field. Could be a good way to land a job after too !

      Hi ! Thank you for you question. If you have other family members that will also move with you then it would be easier to study as your family can share responsibility taking care of your child. I'm not sure if children can attend public school for free if you are on a student visa with dependents. I do think it would be a great experience to get your OT degree not only to help your son and also open up your career opportunities. If you can immigrate in the future, Australia has NDIS (national disability insurance scheme) which will give your son funding for therapy and parents can choose how to use the funds. Hope that is helpful and best wishes ! 😊

      @sharonhavily 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ankit, thank you for watching! OT is quite an in demand job in countries like USA, Canada, UK, Australia but each country has their own requirements to qualify as an OT in their country. Of course she would have to go through the immigration process before applying to be an OT in that country. She can check in the WFOT website for the countries she is interested in. Even though some countries may pay better than others, she should also consider the cost of living of those cities. Ex. California pays quite high for OTs but also is very expensive to live in.

      I started my process to get accredited in Canada in Jan 2019 and if everything went well, could have started working by spring 2020 - so more than a year still! Not sure how fast they are processing them now but I would still suggest to assume 1 year. I was also told 6months before but that didn't turn out to be true 😂

  • @learningtho582
    @learningtho582 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Sharon your video is amazing and very informative. As an OT can you choose which population group you want to work with? I don't particularly like working with children. Not that I dislike children but because I don't have any experience dealing with kids and I find it difficult to communicate with them. From what I see paediatric is a very popular specialty in OT (also job openings) so I don't know... And also... I'm an introvert and quite shy. I do like working with and helping people but just need time to recharge from social interactions and I can get nervous. Do you think with this personality I can do OT ?

    • @sharonhavily
      @sharonhavily 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much ! ☺️ There are definately more adult populations to work with. You can work in hospitals (inpatient) or in the community (outpatient) directly with patients to help them with disease, disability and injury. There's also non-clinical roles like research, health promotion and being involved in health policy but usually a lot of experience is needed. OTs come in a shapes and sizes do being an introvert can be an advantage too. Introverts tend to be good listeners and observant and those are important skills to have. I'd suggest practicing interviewing and doing assessments once you're in OT school. It also helps to have a basic script when you meet the patient but you'll have a supervisor to shadow and follow first! The more you do it the easier it becomes. Best wishes ! 👌

    • @sharonhavily
      @sharonhavily 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi ! In Australia you there aren't any differences with bachelor's or master's. I actually think you have an advantage because you can get more years or clinical experience early on ! Only drawback of bachelor's is if you want to work in other countries, some require masters but I'm not totally sure. Generally speaking, if you have master's degree you may be slightly higher on the PayScale for government jobs but I think for AUS it it dependent on the years of practice you've had. The master's is an entry-level degree for people who want to switch into and OT career but had other bachelor's degrees. If, one day you want to go into research then perhaps you'd need a master's before going for the PhD ☺️ Hope that helps !

    Hello, i am a 3rd yr OT student from aus. What field of OT are you working in now? I've had a look at canada's international applicant system before out of interest but i just watched your other video too. why are you governed by provinces instead of a national board? Its so weird that so much from OT comes from canada but the system seems so complicated!

    • @sharonhavily
      @sharonhavily 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael! I'm working in a private pediatric clinic. Yes the accreditation process is quite lengthy, I think otherwise more OTs would come to work - and there are plenty of jobs here ! The OT profession is overseen be CAOT (Canadian association of OTs) but registration for this is optional. Registration by provincial legislation to practice is mandatory. Healthcare and education are both regulated by province - no idea why! I love how in Aus you can move interstate much more freely without worrying about your licence to practice!

      Hi Priscilla, thanks! I graduated with a BA in psyc and crim. But some of my peers came from business and engineering backgrounds too. If you do not have any basic psyc prerequisites like psyc 101 from undergrad, you'll have to take it instead of an elective in the MOT course. I'd suggest taking psyc 101 at any qualified institution online to make room for the OT electives (which are more fun!). I'd imagine more difficulty with studying for anatomy without any familiarity of the human body. But everyone goes through the same course load except 1-2 electives in 2nd year. Hope that helps inform your decision. Best wishes! 🙏😊
