August 10th 2023, Ambersands Beach. No bait schools or bird activity. I am the only person on the beach. I fished a paddle tail in the wash from the entrance North past the 3rd Hut. Along the way, I picked up one decent surf snook. Nice fish saved the day.

Never ever tighten your drag if you hook a big fish! We all get excited when a bigger than expected fish is running and the drag is singing. BUT! Never say to yourself that "I'm going to put a little more pressure on em." A little more is usually too much.

Short clip on a beautiful Sebastian morning on Father's Day. A couple of Jacks and a lot of casts. At least there are signs of fish life along the beaches.

Well this video is NOT about Surf Fishing in Florida. However, I do sneak off to far away places to sample some fishing opportunities in my home waters. Our Guide and friend, Guy Buono, Captain of Crunch Sport Fishing , in Staten Island, NY., brought us out for some very large Stripers off the Jersey Coast. All fish were revived and released. Warning! These are some fine. once in a lifetime, St...

Beach Fishing is a strange sport! You never know what your gonna catch! Slow morning with no signs of bait or birds, Yet! Artie caught 2 blues and one small Jack, until I hooked up a strong contender. A turtle! It fought gallantly! Released unharmed! Then Artie snagged one as well.....larger than mine of course!
I've got the early morning blues.
มุมมอง 169ปีที่แล้ว
A great return to the beaches, first cast = first fish. OKAY, It was a small Jack, then the blues arrived. Florida's bluefish are not like the North East monsters. I've read that they are actually a sub species that inhabit the Southern range and into the Caribbean. The Blues this morning had a green dorsal area and green around the eyes. Nice sunrise and I caught some fish. Can't get much better.

Bonsteel Beach, Melbourne Florida Early morning, Tarpon crashing schools of herring like bait off the bar, just out of reach. My buddy, Grant, fished a white buck tail jig with a white curly tail. He landed a 40" Snook and was rewarded with a good soaking.

Arrived at Bonsteel Park at 6:20 AM. I headed South about 1/4 mile. As sunlight seeped in, I could see massive schools of small bait fish headed North. They were at the limit of a long cast until the Tarpon, Monster Snook, and Jacks arrived. Just because we can see them, hooking them is another matter altogether. Jack at 11:54 Snook at 21:05

Artie Catches another Big Snook

Bonsteel Beach this morning 9/19/21 Some small bait schools with no obvious predators, but they are there. Artie is a great guy and a great fisherman. He like that slam shady / Zman plastic with a 1/4oz jig head. Just cast it out, let it sink and reel it in slowly. No Jerking not twitching. Persistence pays! Artie always has his line in the water. I should learn to tsalk less and fish more!

The mullet run started about a week ago and is gathering in intensity. At this time of year mullet is the meal of the day for all game fish along the surf. There are Tarpon both big and small crashing the schools into the wash. Yet, Tarpon are the most difficult fish to catch on a lure. Yep! I've used them all and not one is consistent. My friend Bill is a Florida newbie from the Jersey Shore. ...

Nice
Hi John, All those Stripers were bigger than my best fish. My longest Striper was 41 inches. That was a great trip. Take care and good luck, Mickey
even the first pole of the catwalk close to shore has schools of snook roaming confirmed by my go pro
ty SOOO much, i appreciate you!! very informative!!
Thanks Angel, Come on Down. The fish are waiting.
just booked 2 nights at the campground at the inlet 4 hours to get there bringing my kayak and waiting for first week Oct (mullet run time)
If you want big Reds. Fish the shoreline directly adjacent to the camp grounds at night with cut or live bait. The best Kayak fishing is on the opposite North side of the Inlet area away from the inlet itself. Fish the canals and mangroves. OR, launch the kayak in the Pelican Island National Refuge, a little further South of the Inlet. Easy FREE access to canals and mangroves. There is a kayak launch area in the Pelican Refuge. Please note, that is not wise to navigate a kayak in the inlet area. Many boaters are not wary of other vessels. Florida does not require any safety course to drive a boat.
HI John, That was a nice Snook. Glad you're out fishing and catching. Was there a sand bar out there ? I went to Viera on Tuesday for my photo ID and medical registration. I'll talk to you later. Good luck and have fun, Mickey
Hi Mickey, There is an artificial reef that runs from the McCarthy Museum South to Wabasso. It is very close to the shoreline near Ambersands. Lots of rocks and snags within casting range at low water. I've lost many spoons, bucktails, and paddle tails by reaching out too far. So our casts must be along the shoreline.
Hi John, I guess it's best to fish there are high tide. Good to know about the reef. Thanks, Mickey
Hi John, Ray from NJ, been to a couple of Sebastian Fishing club meetings, hope to be back in Florida soon, tight lines! Your videos help me remember why I love Sebastian so much, Thanks,
Thanks Ray. Yeah! Florida's great, but I love those stripers in the surf.
Hey John, I appreciate the honest, humble, and helpful insight on fighting that nice snook. It helps the rest of us learn. I enjoy your videos
Thanks Ryan, It still hurts! I'll be on that beach tomorrow morning for a replay, perhaps. There will always be some mini Jacks around. I did see a few juvenile Tarpon in the near surf that morning. Once the bait thickens up, the big girls will be on the beach,
Hi John, Sorry you lost that Snook. A lot of my jig heads that have good size hooks are about 1/2 oz to 1 oz. and sometimes that's too big. The lighter jigs have smaller hooks and would probably open up like yours did. Do you know of any 1/4 oz jigs with big hooks? Looks like you had a mullet paddle tail on the jig head. I'm glad to see the surf is active. Take care and good luck, Mickey
It was my own fault. If I just played the fish out, I would have lander her. The lure that I was using came from China. I used it a few days ago and it withstood 15 small jacks without any damage, I just ordered 100 more black and white and clear crystal colors. I found a larger size of the black and white and ordered 100 of those. They will be my lure of choice for awhile. I'll give you some.
Hi John, The next time we fish together, I can meet you at the beach or the parking lot. Which ever works best for you. I just took the line off my reel and turned it around to put the used end on the reel first. This should hold me for another four or five years. Thanks, Mickey
@@1539Mickey Sure Mickey. The problem is the long walk. The better locations at every beach lie up to one half mile away. The walk to the spot is the easy part. Its coming back that is the hard part.
Hi John, That's cause we're old. We just have to walk slow. Take care, Mick
Hi John, That was a nice Jack. The water was really flat. You don't see that very often. Nice to see your friend catch a Mackerel. More species means better fishing. Thanks again for Friday and the lures. Have a Happy Father's Day, Mickey
Hi John, Thank you for taking me fishing today. That was my first Jack Cravalle ever! And I caught it on the popper you gave me. That was a great morning. Thanks again. Talk to you soon. Take care, Mickey
nice to see you back on the beach John , pole 7 in my book it is one of the best spot in shore fishing on the east coast, caught lot of species on that beach! John keep up the good work!
Hi John, You're up early. Nice to see some bait action. You caught a mix of species today. I guess that's a good sign. Could you take a close-up shot of the lures that you use in your next video. I'd like to see what you're using. I haven't been fishing in weeks. I've been working around the house, but I need to get fishing again. Good luck and have fun, Mickey
Two topwaters. One popper and one lipless "walk the dog type". I'll give you a couple.
Hi John, See you Friday morning. Mickey
I love it when you post a new video!
Thanks Steve, I haven't gone fishing much this past few months. Many videos never make it to TH-cam. I post often on our Sebastian Fishing Club's FB page. You are welcome to join. Please answer all of the membership questions. JJC
Good video. Cheers
Great video, Thanks for sharing!
Hi John, Great trip back to your old home grounds. Every fish was a trophy. Planer trolling big eels was winning strategy today. Looks like everyone was having a great day. Nice that you all released the fish to create the next generation. Enjoy your trip up north. See you at the meeting. Have fun and good luck, Mickey

Hi John, I sent my address on FaceBook. Thanks, Mickey
Hi John, No e-mail yet. My replies keep getting deleted for some reason.
Hi John, I'm glad you're catching fish. When I moved to Missouri, I gave all my salt water lures to my friend in Ocean City, NJ. Now that I'm in Florida, I need to purchase more lures. I've mostly been bait fishing. I caught five small Black Drum last Thursday, in the Indian River Lagoon. They were 11 to 16 inches. Take care and good luck, Mickey
Great! I think that I still have your email address, If so I'll send you a list of the most popular lures for the Florida Ocean. Most plugs and lures are in the one ounce range. However, One fella throws out those big wooden plugs for Tarpon, and does pretty well.
Hey Mickey, I sent you an email. Let me know if you received it.
you can cover the hook with your had and the cut pieces will not go flying off in various directions. Or cover the hook with a cloth. but you look like a kid that has to pick up a spider. LOL
Ha! Your observations are correct! I was cautious and did not expect the final effect! Thanks JJC
I flinched looking via phone 😅. Also if covered we would not be able to see the cut 🤷🏼♂️
@@NoNopeAndNo YEAH! It surprised me as well. Shoulda known better. It wouldn't have been the first time I got a piece of metal stuck in my eye. I got lucky with this one, I'll wear safety glasses next time!
good catch John , keep up the good work!
Love those Sun Rises!
It's good to see that you're still fishing!
Thanks Steve, I've been fishing all along, just did not post on TH-cam. One of these days, I'll have the camera running and hook up one of those big ole' surf Tarpon. There are hundreds of them in the warmer weather, BUT they are very picky.
Too much filler.
Thanks for your observation, However, I am not making professional videos. Only talking about fishing in and around Sebastian.
A good day John. Two nice fish! Enjoyed the sunrise also.
Hi John, I read your reply to Tony and you are right about your outlook on fishing. I have a saying; Fishing is fun, catching a fish is a bonus. It's just great to be on the water and outside. And then there's always the surprise of what and when you can catch something. The ocean is full of surprises. We just signed a contract to purchase a house in Palm Bay. We'll be busy for a few months with the move but I'll contact you to meet up and surf fish sometime. We have visited Sebastian a few times and really like the area. Shrimp dinner at Capt. Hiram's and Squid Lips are my favorites. I would like to fish at the Sebastian Inlet in the future. Good luck and have fun, Mickey
That's Good news. I'll be ready to take you to all of the beaches that I fish at. And then I'll drag you to a club meeting too!
Nice to see you out there John. When are you going to get one on?
Hi Tony, Hmmm, I do catch one every now and then, Yet, it really doesn't matter that much, The beach is beautiful and every sunrise is a blessing. That may sound like a lot of baloney. However, One of my ole' fishing buddies just passed away. He and I caught many great fish together at Sandy Hook and along the outer beaches of Cape Cod, The reality is, going fishing is more important than catching fish. That last cast is on the horizon. I'll give you a call later today.
Nice how about the weed slime? Still bad?
No weed this morning. The weed comes and goes, may be at one beach and not the other.
Hi John, Good morning fishing today. A Jack and a Snook = a good day. Wouldn't it be nice if we could catch two fish every time we went out. I guess the early fisherman catches the fish. Good luck and have fun, Mickey
Come on down Mickey. Gotta be there and ready to fish by 6:30. The action dies by 7:30. I'm gonna cheat tomorrow. I'm bringing a cast net and bucket to live line some critters. I rigged it all to fit into a backpack.
Hi John, I'll need to give you a few days notice. I have to change my schedule a day or two in advance to be there by 6:15am. I usually get to bed by 1:00 am and get up around 10 am. Good luck tomorrow.
Hi John, Wow, it's been a year since your last video. Glad you're back and all is well. We moved from South Jersey to Palm Bay in April. I've been fishing the piers and bridges around Melbourne and Palm Bay. We took a drive down the beach side and checked out Sebastian Inlet and had dinner at Capt. Hiram's on my birthday in July. I'll be fishing new areas and the beaches, now that Labor Day has passed and summer's over. Good luck and have fun, Mickey
Welcome to the land of unlimited hot sunshine! There are many access points to the beaches. Some are mere pull offs to winding trails of sand before the beach, some are more direct with parking lots and many other anglers. The beaches have come alive recently with bait schools of herring, fry, and mullet. Once you turn 65, all licenses are free, even hunting. I'll be surf casting tomorrow AM, don't know where yet. No stripers here, well there have been two caught near the North Inlet side over the past 8 years. If you would like a drive around. let me know and we'll hit all the beach access points with discussion of the character's of each area.
Hi John, Thank you for the offer to "guide" me around. I'll let you know when we can set-up a meeting. I do have to tell you that I'm a late sleeper. I'm 75 and have my free fishing license. We are in an apartment till March. We're looking for a mobil/manufactured home. One place we looked into was Barefoot Bay. We do like Palm Bay a lot, but Sebastian area is only 15 minutes away. Good luck fishing tomorrow. Take care and have fun, Mickey
it as been a wild since your last video where were you John? glad you are back on the beach, keep up the good work!
I was going through a fish funk! I had visited New Jersey each spring and late fall to see my new grandson. While I'm there I book a charter with a good friend to fish for stripers. Well, we did very well on each trip. Fish up to 40lbs. I've been hooked on Stripers since I was 10 years old. I fished my whole life for those critters and still dream of them. So, I was stuck in a "why bother" phase. BUT! I'm getting over it! Thanks JJC
Another great sunrise! It is good to have you back.
Thanks Steve, I'd rather a few more fish and a little less sunrise. When I lived up North there were many foggy mornings. Fog is a very rare occurrence in this part of Florida.
What kind/size reel and rod were you using? Nice video, thanks!
When tarpon are around, line capacity is important. I'll use a Penn 6500 or 5500 in order to have 350 yards or more line. I'll match that with a 9' or 9.6' medium light action rod. Most fish will be in close, less than 100 feet from shore. Once a tarpon is hooked on the beach, its usually an hour long tug of war. Thanks JJC
@@visualedtech awesome! Thanks very much for the details
Great video. Are Sebastian inlet’s surrounding beaches accessible? Fishing from those beaches okay to do?
Thanks! Yes, there are many free parking, beach access areas, North and South along the coast. I have some maps on our Sebastian Fishing Club's FB page in the files section. Look us up and request membership. The FB group is open to all anglers interested in fishing in and around Sebastian. We have some excellent fly fishing anglers that fish the surf and backwaters on board. If you live nearby, we have a real life club that meets monthly. We try to get informative speakers and everyone is welcome. JJC
Does that rod have the tip to be able to cast and work a 1/2 bucktail efficiently? I've been trying to find a rod that can reall cast 1/2 paddle/bucktails and the 7/8/1 1/8 sp minnows a good distance while still having enough backbone to swing a 5 or 6 lb fish onto the jetty. Either the tip is too stiff which hurts casting distance and makes it awful hard to work a lighter bucktail. The rods that have the right tip and can sling those lighter baits dont really have the power to confidently swing fish.
That's the trade off that applies to every rod. The Tsunami can probably handle your requirements. I have not fished off a jetty in over 50 years. So, my experience is limited to stiffer rods and soaking baits from rock jetties or piers, a really long time ago. I am currently using an 8' St Croix MoJo surf rod along the coastline in Florida. The strike zone is close to the beach. A long cast is not required, however I like to cast as far as I can. Its just part of the fun. If you can visit a fishing shop that has a good assortment of quality rods, you'll be able to test a few good rods to find the best of both uses. 6lbs doesn't seem like a lot of weight, until you try to lift it with a fishing rod. The more stress applied to a rod increases the chance of snapping it in two. I'll rig up the Tsunami and lift a barbell up. I'll post the result in another email.
OK Rusty! Just rigged up a 5lb barbell and dead lifted it with the tsunami, NO GOOD. The rod bowed nearly double with a 5lb load. I don't think that you will every find a rod that satisfies both of your needs.
@@visualedtech The best place as far as amount of different surf rods I've been to is TD. Theres only so much you can get from handling a rod. You really dont know until you cast it. I've a couple mojos the 8 and 10' and an older premier which works but I'm always looking for 1 that can do it better. The rod that keeps coming up is a century weapon jr. Little more then I usually spend but if it works it will be worth it.
@@visualedtech Oh no dont do that lol. There are rods that can do it, but not at that price point. Check out Black Hole USA nano rods, hes got videos his rods being pressure tested and lifting full water jugs.
Camera could have been more raised instead of pointed down.
They built much of that since I left in 87’. It was more rustic fishing but dynamite back then! (My first intro to no-see-ums) on my first Sebastian adventure!
This just made things easy! Thanks!
Looking at coming down in early December. How’s the surf fishing that time of year
The Pompano season is in full swing for the bait fishermen. Then we'll have Jacks, Macks, Blues and some Snook in the surf. Sharks...There are always sharks.
Can’t listen to this Yankee accent!
Sorry Rev, We all are distinct in this great country, but we are all Americans. My first exposure to America's diversity was in boot camp in 1969. We all learned how to cooperate and befriend each other whether we grew up on a farm or a city street. If it makes you feel any better, I don't even like the way I sound either, but I deal with it. Thanks
I think the sound is cool
@@visualedtech I can’t believe you even responded to his stupidity…. Your accent is lovely❤ Thanks for the video! I was afraid to go to Sebastian because I can’t stand the crowds but now I know there are other places I can go thanks to you.
nice to see you back on the beach ! can't wait for the border to open and be back on the beach to post #7 John keep up the good work!
Its Easy! Just walk in through Mexico and we'll make arrangements to pick you up. Bring a rod with you and tell the border patrol that you're just "goin fishin'", That'll work,
Nice to see you're still in the surf John.
Yeah! Still pounding the waves with very few hookups for me. I have to give you a call to catch up.
where in Florida is this? how far down are the mullet?
This beach is in Melbourne/ Brevard County. This area is on the East coast, from the Sebastian Inlet North to Cape Canaveral. These fish probably will continue South into the Fort Pierce Area to Hobe Sound.
Headed down to MB this weekend for 2 weeks, cannot wait. Always envious of your videos when i'm not there. Thanks for posting, maybe see ya out there.
The mullet are everywhere moving South, I prefer early morning fishing, but they are showing up near the beaches all day long. The blitzes have been at 6:40 AM and at around 4PM.
