18:45 yaaa, da likk!
Don has to be in the NHOP league of bassists surely? Magnificent playing Don.
I thought black face was inappropriate.
Thank you so much for posting, wonderful to see it,
Wonderful performance!
❤
Ed Bickert, sunglasses and open collar, Mr Cool AF , just kicking ass and taking names.
🌱🌻💙😀
Oh the millions of perfect notes that flowed through that guitar!
Ed's playing is always a present. I wish I could see him perform live. Don Thompson manages to highlight him exactly as it should. What's this gorgeous waltz by the way ?
One Morning In May
Thank you! Timeless and authentic !
Love Ed's comping.

Brilliant! I remember seeing this on tv in the 90s I was blown away and always wondered if I’d find it again. Thank you for posting this.
Don Thompson is a MONSTER bass player. So amazing to see what he and Ed Bickert do!!
Totally agree. I have some great work by both of these giants on my TH-cam channel. Just posted a full album of Don’s today.
i want to know the setlist?
Ed ! yes sir
Beautiful, Soap!
Aw, thanks so much, Soap!
@@DarylBuckleYou suck
Interesting sound. I’ve never heard his guitar so bright before, usually he had the top end rolled off.
The engineer always has the last word.
@@ronaskew not sure about that. If the player rolls off all the high freq at the amp the engineer doesn’t have any options to put it back. You can’t boost what ain’t there.
@@sblack48 He has the last word because he records it as close to what he wants as is possible. So, if he paints himself into a corner, it is a comfy corner of choice and taste.
Ed sounds amazing...as always! He's probably my favorite trio player. Can anyone tell me what he was using for an amp here? I can't quite see it.
I heard he liked an old Standel amp.
@@steveburchfield5576 That's true; he used a Standel in the early days until it broke down. It couldn't be repaired because the circuits were of an unorthodox modular design. He used an orange Roland Cube 60 for a very long time, likely beginning in the mid-to-late '70s, until that wore out. He then used an Evans, which I saw him use in '97, but it never could give him his trademark warm sound.
MF DOOM Brought me Here
How? I'm big fan of both. He sampled Bickert somewhere?
i have no idea mb he mentions him in an interview / i cant remember. Dilla defly did tho@@monoswinger
thanks man, i'll try to google it @@irie1tes
What year was this?
Ed Bickert/Don Thompson (Sackville, 1978). A guess…
Absolutely amazing
Just wonderful playing.. Ed's harmonic/melodic ideas are so beautiful, even every single note. and the wonderful chemistry among great players also

This guy sucks . Amateur . I can fart better songs out my ass !
th-cam.com/video/FyzLZEqbnHk/w-d-xo.html Recognize this sample? It is from the BETONJAZZ show called Impressions if anybody has it please upload it to youtube or send me a message!
That bottom e string looks massive. Helps to explain his tone perhaps. The guitar that is.
I've read for years he used 11's, but towards the end of his career, went down to 10's because time takes its toll. Like Bill Frisell, he was just a wizard of knowing exactly where to pick or pluck, and with exactly how much force. Most pros are pretty good at this, but some like Joe Pass are just playing so much that they can't give that kind of care to every note. Bickert is of the BIll Evans school, more interested in creating a mood with his touch.
"Oh the broom closet isn't available? Okay, I'll just set up here behind the vibes and the bass player." --Ed Bickert. Love Ed wearing the shades. This is Rob McConnell's Jive Five of course, and McConnell used Bickert on sessions and gigs from the the late 1960s (maybe even earlier) to the late 1990s. I think one of the last studio records Bickert made was a Christmas album with McConnell's Boss Brass. Jerry Fuller and Ed were 2/3 of Paul Desmond's "Toronto Quartet", along with Don Thompson.
Funny! Yes, Ed's staging definitely summed up his non-extroverted demeanor.
Thanks Daryl! Love walked in, man.
RIP Ed...thanks for the music...we'll miss you
Ed Bickert forever! 🎸
Estupendo trío de un gran guitarrista con un tremendo contrabajista DON THOMPSON!
Don Thompson played with a lyricism reminiscent of Scott LaFaro in his Bill Evans days.
Exactly...
Real music- gott damn!
If that recording could be cleaned up and put on line or on a disc, I'd buy it in a hearbeat!
Absolutely fantastic and amazing !!! Ed has influenced the jazz guitar play and style in the last 40 years the most (y)
Magistral guitarrista con un magistral contrabajista que lamentablemente dejo el bajo para tocar el piano (se habrá cansado de transportar el instrumento?)😊 está era la base rítmica de la orquesta de Rob MacConnell.
Why is it when I hear some wonderful sounds , a "Burke " says something stupid . Like Reggie Tito. I do wonder what Planet he's on . Lord Save Us ! .
@John (grumpy ass) Fenner: Settle down there Sparky! The guitar *is* thrashed and it's beautiful. It's possibly the most iconic thrashed guitar in Canadian jazz history. Reggie's not being rude, he's making an accurate observation. Most of us who love Ed's playing enjoy knowing that his amazing tone comes from that wonderfully thrashed guitar. You're the only one being a Burkley Hunt round here mate! Now, sit down and apologize to poor friendly Reggie!
It is trashed. Like Pat Metheny’s gibson or Wllie Nelson’s guitar, both of which were worn through. It’s just an accurate observation not a criticism
@@errornosuchuser9196 Of course, you are quite right. I wouldn't want to upset anyone. Sorry all. But,!. It's a "cultivated" look !. Great care otherwise, being taken to ensure the instrument is set up properly and plays well.any Guitar "thrown" into the trunk of a car for years, would eventually be unplayable !. Fabulous playing !, but the Huitar is a deliberate "talking point". Kind Regards to All, Fenn.
I believe you may missed Ed Bickert on guitar, unless I'm not seeing all the description text. In any case he's an amazing guitarist. I love his piano like playing and his wonderful lines; a very musical cat. The coolest thing about him is the amazing tone he gets from a Telecaster. Ed Bickert is still alive. I believe that he is about 83. stopped publicly playing around 2010 I want to say. Cheers.
*@Troy Lennerd* `````````````````````````` *Thank You , Thank You, Thank You...,* for bringing this to the attention of the public. Ed Bickert didn't care much for fame and centre of the spot-light. This video shows so beautifully his quiet demeanor and unsurpassed artistry even if he is barely visible on the bandstand... I guess, true genius doesn't need much advertising, does he (?) 🐳 ♫♫ ❀(~‿~)❀ ♫♫
if i were ..pat metheny or george benson ..... i would be looking up to ED bickert .... because ED is AN absolute monster
Ed's name is in the title
@@1610austin they know ED BICKERT and his wonderful class . ED left us in 2019 . R.I.P.

that guitar is thrashed
*@ Reggie Tito* Who cares !!! Still sounds great to me... Besides that, Ed Bickert can pick up a piece of 2x4 from the pile, nail 6 strings to it and play gig the following night Lol...
I've read that Ed traveled with his guitar in the trunk of his car, no case lol, just droped it into the trunk.
There were photos posted of Ed's 80th with people holding that thrashed guitar with two hands like it was pure gold. That thrashed guitar is iconic to any Canadian jazz guitar player.
Yeah it pretty cool. People now pay extra money to buy new guitars that look like that - they call it ‘reliced’
Todd Brooks !!!!
Daryl, a great video from the 80's featuring amazing musicians, some sadly no longer with us. However, you seem to have forgotten to include Peter Appleyard (on the vibes), in your musician list.
+Peter A Sorry Peter! I hadn't seen the full video upon uploading it to share with everyone: I only looked at who was playing during the first tune and wrote down who I recognized. I will make the amendment!
Your solo in Sophisticated Lady is lovely!! Thank You!!
@@passionforguns I don think this is *that* Peter A. Mr. Appleyard passed away in 2013.
