You don't (at least you shouldn't) expend a large chunk of NIL dollars for someone to give you essentially what Tyler Buchner could. With actually less success passing. There's simply no spinning that. Leonard, and the WR's have to get better. Marry his considerable running with some semblance of a downfield passing threat and ND will be hard to stop. Team being flat doesn't rationalize the NIU game offensively.

I could care less if Riley throws a TD or a bomb of any kind. We brought him here for his running ability. He scored 21 points last week. We won by 59. He can throw 10-20 yards...thats all I need. The coaches took him out of his comfort zone during the NIU game....that is part of why we lost.

If the Miami of Ohio can score 17, they can win. Best bet in college football this weekend is TMoO and the points. The “impossible” with ND football is always possible.

Thank you for the honest appraisals! Watching and listening to some shows, you would think ND LOST 66-7 versus winning. I believe the idea in sports is to win the game as convincingly as possible. With 362 rushing yards, and 66 points, it seemed very convincing, at least to me. The game plan took advantage of what Leonard does very well, and the results were great. Why obsess over what might not work three weeks from now? The defense played great, and was able to demonstrate some great depth. There are very few QB's who can run and throw.

I never saw a freshman class with so many highly underrated players!

Once ND stretched the lead, it seems ND/Leonard should have sprinkled in a few downfield passes. He needs some confidence in that area as well. Maybe he is just not capable.

ND struggles against the zone more than the WBB program, the past several seasons. Part of it is Riley Leonard. Part of it is Riley Leonard contracting Sam Hartman disease in that he doesn't trust his OL or certain WR's. The " freindly fire sack" and holding penalty by Knapp undid a sure TD to Harrison and a nice completion to Greathouse. The trust in Mitchell Evans has to filter to the other receivers. And some of that is on the receivers.

We all just want consistency. This team so far looks bipolar.

This is a massive issue, Riley can't throw the ball! He's Grad Transfer QB, this shouldn't be an issue playing the position. And Steve coming in and looking like a real Qb just makes Riley look even worse. Enough of the excuses from all the ND platforms on this QB situation involving Riley.

What happened last week freeman? Besides a lost. You talk like a player and not like a coach.

Well I just consumed my first piece of ND football content this week. Feels as if 80% of the games over the last 10 years are: Season deciding. Career deciding. Job deciding. “I until they show me” Though I’m no longer an avid college football fan, the last game still made me sick to my stomach. Go Irish

If Leonard is limited at all in any aspect of the game he should not start. If they absolutely need him he can sub in. Jamie just said he won’t be stiff arming w his left arm. That’s a limitation. He’s going to be guarding that shoulder involuntarily. He may tweek it in the middle of a throw. Who knows?

The combo of losing 5 of last 6 games in '14 (only win vs Navy) and then the '16 disaster should have been the end for BK...this feels the same to me for MF. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see how he comes back from this.

We don’t need to see highlights of someone not committing

Lack of confidence in the O-line has affected every play call. Riley has happy feet waiting for the protection to collapse. The loss of Joe Alt has had an enormous impact on the offense. I also believe the game would have turned out very differently had the defense held NIU when they were starting on the one yard line on their second series. That long TD gave them enormous belief that they could compete. Hold them and force a punt, and ND starts a drive at mid field. Game over. Instead, NIU hung around and got more confidence and belief that they could really win ...not just compete.

ND is not top 25 material, no less top 10. When you watch top 10 teams, they come out and throw haymakers all game every game. Whether they are playing Ohio State or NIU, ND tries to jab, jab, jab, jab, jab and throw one punch. Every game-including under Kelly with some exceptions-has been managed to try let the other team make mistakes. Defense settle for stopping teams for FGs (NIU scored four times, ND scored twice). And that is how you end up losing games to Ohio State 16-14 and NIU 16-14. If NDs opponent is of equivalent or better talent, even if they make some mistakes, they beat ND. If the opponent is of demonstrably lesser talent-on paper-and makes no mistakes or unforced errors, they keep it close and sometimes win. Is this because ND is overrated (I say yes). The other option is playing scared or straight clock management. ND is the scared dude who likes a girl, who likes him, who he sees at the bar every Friday : his friends and her friends are saying “Go talk to her! Ask her out!” and he says “I will. I will”. and every time he either leaves or runs to the bathroom or starts talking to some stranger for three hours about life cause he’s scared. And eventually the girl says hell with it and some other dude asks her out and off she goes. And he tells himself it’s fine because she didn’t like him anyway.

Thats unfortunate that he will play.

I feel like I am taking crazy pills the way people are talking about Riley Leonard. The guy cannot get the job done and now he is hurt in a capacity that clearly hindered him against NIU. He did not attend Notre Dame, he has not been with Notre Dame, we should let a Notre Dame guy in Steve Angeli take the helm. Notre Dame does not owe a thing to Riley Leonard (besides some preposterous NIL deal)

I am just so disappointed in Marcus Freeman I've given him the benefit of the doubt because he's not a season coach he never has gone through the rigors of becoming a head coach and then Saturday he had that dumbfounded look on his face like he didn't know what the heck was going on I'm pretty sure everybody saw it and I've seen that look before and it's disgusting and then I hear today that doing practice they only practice till Wednesday that's awful when did you put the game plan in Marcus I've lost confidence in the man I'm sorry he can recruit like nobody's business but a head coach no I didn't even think he was that good of a defensive coordinator remember the Florida State game he look like he didn't know what to do a fish out of water oh well we shall see

Greg...mad respect, you keep it real even in this very difficult position. You should not be apologizing though, most of us were hyped after last week...my confidence in MF went from about 5 to 7 after last week, now I'm at like a 'hopeful' 2.

This Purdue game is Freeman's job. 0 confidence in Riley. 2 things will happen. They will let Riley play the whole game and lose or eventually will bench him in favor of Steve Angeli and win. Steve is a baller and i feel really bad for him. He is not flashy or super fast but makes winning plays. I think he can win the next 10 if given a chance.
