I've been messing with creating acrylic paints. What is the difference between a pigment dispersion and using something like an acrylic ink?
A pigment dispersion is finely milled pigment suspended in a surfactant fluid. It does not have binder added, but is instead added to binder. You can use the dispersions in watered down acrylic to make acrylic ink.
An acrylic ink is a paint with acrylic in it. Basically just a very saturated (high pigment load) very fluid acrylic. The dispersion is a liquid pigment concentrate with no acrylic in it. It is not a paint until you add a binder i.e. acrylic. You can make your own super saturated acrylic inks by adding dispersion to our fluid Acrylic 60 and you can add water to it as well if you choose.
@@guerrapaint4249 Thank you! I'm working on putting in an order right now!
Which alcohol are you using? Ethanol, isopropyl?
Isopropyl :)
so I am a fan of aquazol. Can you use aquazol in lieu of gum arabic in gouache like you can in watercolor?
And how much would 4oz nickel violet dispersion make of acrylic paint? I mean more fluid of mediums doesn’t have to be heavy body
We say dispersions make between 8 and 16 times their volume in paint, depending on the inherent tinting strength of the individual pigment. Organic Nickel Violet is a metal complex pigment which has properties from both inorganic and organic pigment classes, putting it's tinting strength in the middle. A 4 oz of this dispersion will make you anywhere from a 32oz (quart) to 48oz of paint depending on your desired saturation level. We usually recommend folks start with the 1oz dispersion sizing when starting out because 4oz is a lot of pigment! However, there is a 30% savings when you jump to that size
@@guerrapaintpigmentnyc2501 ok this is very helpful and makes me feel better that they will be able to create a larger volume 🙏 I was nervous since it was only 1oz but I’m curious to get a bunch of 1oz paints to start off thanks 😊

I couldn’t find Potters Pink color… do you have or maybe you would someday?
That is PR233, a tin chromate pigment. It has a low tinting strength and not a pigment we currently carry, but you can find it with Natural Pigments www.naturalpigments.com/potters-pink-pigment.html

It seems to me that Urethane 32 would be a good choice for glazing, is that correct?
Yes indeed! There is also a new version of Urethane 40 which is crystal clear and flexible for canvas and paper. 32 is not flexible, more for panel.
@@guerrapaintpigmentnyc2501 Ok, thank you!
I'm here after seeing you on ArtProf. So happy to find you have a channel!
Yay Art Prof! Welcome! Let us know if you have questions!

Glad you enjoyed it Tracy :)
These “parts”- are they by weight or by volume?
The parts in this video are by volume. :)
@@guerrapaintpigmentnyc2501 thanks!
What is the best foundation for urethane paints? Paper, aluminum, wood panel, glass, canvas?
Thank you for your question! The Urethane 32 is a harder urethane which works well as a stand alone varnish or as a paint base suitable for non-flexible surfaces, i.e wood panel or canvas mounted on panel. It also adheres well to metal and glass. The Urethane 40 and the Urethane Flat (which is made from U40) is highly flexible and good for all surfaces but does not adhere as well to metal and glass.
Thank you so much! Definitely, getting me some:)
Is it possible to get a mat finish with a binder? Are all urethanes glossy?
We have Urethane Flat which is a matte urethane. We also have Silica Flat, which is a matte acrylic binder.
Hi Madelyne! I just watched your video on watercolor and gouache paint mixing and am so pleased. My goal is to make gouache from custom mixtures of pigment dispersions. And make large quantities at a time. (Around 5oz per color because I work with big brushes etc). Because mixing pigments are a priority at this end, is there any possibility of getting an 8 page color chart asap? I would be glad to pay extra for quick consideration from my end. I know you are backlogged on your end so plz let me know what would work. Very best and thanks!!❤

@@guerrapaintpigmentnyc2501 You're welcome.
Can I use commercial sennelier or schminke combined with the dispersions to make watercolor?
Absolutely! The easier pigments like ultramarines, earths and mixed metal oxides, chromopthals, pthalos, and pyrroles will be very easy to just stir in to your watercolor medium. Quinacridones, perylenes, anthraquinones and some of the other organic chromophores may flocculate and have a dull color if you just mix them into a commercial watercolor medium. For the best saturation, you will be better off making your own watercolor binder.
This is wonderfully informative. Thank you very much!
So glad you found it informative!
It's amazing that these paints are still offered to us ....at the quality that they are. Thank you over and over to the Seren Morey and Jody Brennell family for making these paints still available to us to this day!!! We Love you for it! 😃❤️

Fun little tutorial, is the Urethane 32 available on the website? I was looking
Hi there! We had to hold off on selling Urethane 32 for a little bit because of a supply chain delay for one of our raw materials. Fortunately, we just got it in, and should have the new batch of Urethane 32 formulated and bottled up very soon. I added your name to the Urethane 32 email notification list so you will be one of the first to know when it becomes available again- anyone else who would like to be notified can also contact us. Sorry for the delay, and hope you have a great weekend!
When you get air bubbles in the Urethane 32 and you need to let it sit, how long does that take?
30 mins to an hour should do it, sometimes less

@@guerrapaintpigmentnyc2501 oh no. I'm sorry
@@joebrann4612 thank you :(
Awesome.. What a great Mural.. 😃
Thanks so much!
Are these glass paints then fusable??
I'm not totally sure that I understand your question, but the SDS for the glass beads indicates that the Transformation Temperature is 549C and the Softening Point/Lilleton Point is 734c. (107,65 dPa s) The acrylic binder component would melt and fall apart at a radically lower temperature (think blistering paint under a heat gun). You would probably be better off using a different binder that is more heat tolerant if your intention is to have the glass fuse in the form that you paint it in.
RIP Art. Was great seeing you in Brooklyn all the time and visiting the store in Manhattan.
how many pans can 1 oz. Pigment Dispersions make?
It depends on the pigment- a low tint strength hydrophillic pigment like an ultramarine may be at its best 1:1 with the hydrated gum arabic, which would dry to around 1-1.5 fl oz dried. A high tint strength pigment that requires a lot of additives to prevent flocculation like dioxazine violet may make way more, maybe 4 or 5 fl oz dried?
Thank you this was a useful test to see.! I’ve been battling sheen for years with graphite or pen & ink and it seems finally liquid graphite could be the answer…..!
Glad it was helpful, Tom!
Can I add this over an existing paiting to add a translucent glow?
The super shine silver is rather opaque, so it may not be as good of a choice for a translucent look as one of our mica based pearl powders www.guerrapaint.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=145_3 (solar gold is popular if you are looking for a golden glow) or even a gold interference pigment. www.guerrapaint.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=145_7&products_id=565
How to get the look of dry pigments on the surface and making sure they don’t come off ? I like matte look if it but dry pigments don’t stay they come off .. is the water dispersion would help ? Would it still be matte finish ? Thank you 🙏
Your best bet is to overload the Silica Flat binder with plenty of dispersion pigment. To get the powdery look using dry powder the trade off is that some will rub off if you touch it.
Hi there, do you still sell this in powder form?
Afraid not because it is extinct, but the color is so much cleaner in the dispersed form anyway, it works in most applications
. thank you 30:06 thats the best part the camera moves then there's a big old clump of paint. .
ha ha yes

. thank you for posting files online 4:59 huh that must be how you get sky colors "comes right out a sky" 14:02 small round glass beads reflect tx .
I believe that should be captioned as iron oxides- for sky colors we do have true (not hue) Cerulean Blue, but that is from cobalt and tin. ;)
I made some watercolor with your PO49 last year. Added glycerin to make the paint easy to rewet. I have a ton of dispersion left. Gonna try your recipe . Thanks! A question- do dispersions expire? How should they be stored?
Hello! The dispersions do not expire- we have customers still using dispersions that are over 30 years old. They should be stored airtight- if you put the squeeze top on to use them, it is better to switch back to the flat top for long term storage, or you can stretch a piece of plastic across the top of the bottle and then screw on the squeeze top lid to prevent air from getting in. For heavy pigments, it is good to shake them thoroughly if you can see any settling from the outside of the bottle, in addition to shaking them up before each use. Hope you enjoy our watercolor recipe!
@@guerrapaintpigmentnyc2501 Can I use the adjustable chem storage bottles, typical of old-school darkroom chemistry? They have an accordian body, allowing the bottle to collapse on itself, as, product is used. Thank you!
Can you make a video on how one produces po49.
Quinacridone Gold is an extinct pigment. It is no longer in production. We acquired our inventory of Quinacridone Gold over 20 years ago. We are proud to stock over 50 extinct pigments among the 200+ pigments we sell, many of which are not available anywhere else.
@@guerrapaintpigmentnyc2501 Well, someone had to produce it in a lab. Someone must have the formula. And if that is the case, then why can't someone produce po49 in a lab?
@@etienne7774 It is only cost-effective to manufacture the pigments in huge quantities, typically for the production of vehicles like automobiles and ATV's. Due to economy of scale, manufacturing in small batches would be prohibitively expensive. You can see videos of people making ultramarine pigment, which is much easier to make, and they mention the types of purity issues you run into with small batch production. I am not sure what Quin Gold was used for, but there were tons of champagne and gold colors they used to paint cars that they no longer do- think manufacturers like oldsmobile and chrysler from the 90s. The watercolor market is a rounding error compared to the automotive industry, so it seems to me that we won't have reproduction of these pigments in my lifetime.
Please give formulation of glass ampoule paint paste
In the video, Seren used 20% acrylic binder to 80% glass beads. You can see alternative mixtures of paint made with our glass beads in other proportions in these videos: th-cam.com/video/oRtYNIJEOVg/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/WhV33Lzpxrg/w-d-xo.html You can use any ratio you like as long as there is at least 20% binder.
