Lyrics:
Oh little Catherine
You grew up by the coast, but when I found you, you were far from shore
Oh little Catherine
There was something about you, maybe the way that you moved
And I wanted more
So I closed my eyes and took a step closer
I felt so shy but there was nothing that could stop me
Your eyes locked with mine you said "it's nice to meet you"
My tongue got tied and my heart leapt through the ceiling
But I won't stop this time
I said "Hey, you are beautiful
I like your smile; I love your soul
And I would really like to know you more"
You said "Boy, that'd be fine
I'm here alone and all I got is time"
So maybe by the end of the night
Oh little Catherine, I could call you mine
My little Catherine
We stood alone in the dark, down that old street by our cars
Never gonna part
My little Catherine
You had that look in your eyes, I wanted you to be mine
Baby tonight
So I closed my eyes and pulled you in closer
I felt so shy but there was nothing that could stop me
With your hand in mine a spark hit that night sky
I laughed and you smiled
Before I knew what I was saying I said
"Hey, you are beautiful
I like your smile; I love your soul
And I would really like to know you more"
You said "Boy, that'd be fine
We're here alone and all I got is time"
So maybe by the end of the night
Oh little Catherine, I could call you mine
Oooh, ooh
Oooh, ooh
Little Catherine, I could call you mine
Oooh, ooh
Oooh, ooh
Little Catherine, I could call you mine
Oh little Catherine
I saw you holding his hand, walking down by the sand
Happier than ever
Oh little Catherine
I miss that beautiful smile loving me time after time after time
'Cuz girl
You're beautiful
I like your smile I love your soul
Darling I wish, I could know you more
Don't worry I'll be fine
I'm alone but baby I got time
I will never forget the time

I don't know why but swimming in miami will always be my favourit owl city Song. The outromelody gives me goosebumps
Where is bombshell Blonde?
Sausage Biscuits! I never thought of this song becoming an acoustic, I really like what you did with it!
"The lowest rank is D tier and I can't even promise you I'm going to put anything in it" My exact mindset on Adam Young's music tbh, I like where this is going- I'll probably add random thoughts throughout the video while I'm watching, so warning ahead of time for some fun facts, thoughts, and information about his music Edit 1: About This Isn't The End being a true story, that's only kind of true. iirc it's based on his mom's dad, but I don't think that story involved suicide from what I recall, just that he left the family or something. I've also heard him talk about this song being more vague in that you could take 'he was dying inside' not just as depression, but as a number of different issues that could be hurting himself and others, such as addiction Edit 2: "99% sure he's talking about a Starbucks" He is! I believe I heard that from his official annotations on Genius lyrics and suddenly it made so much sense (especially for Adam lol) Edit 3: "Firebird, a song about his brother" fun fact, he's an only child! I heard a couple of the Cinematic songs are based on other people (Montana being about his wife's dad or grandpa i forget which) and this one I believe was from his wife perspective as well. That said, even in his older, non-biographical songs also mention siblings (Peppermint Winter for example) so maybe it's a similar thing to him expressing his love for the beach through music while being a Minnesotan Edit 4: Some Sky Sailing stuff: I learned relatively recently that Brielle, like Hello Seattle and Dear Vienna, is actually about (or at the very least named after) a place rather than a person, Brielle, New Jersey. As for the song Steady As She Goes, I honestly have no idea if it's a Peppermint Winter situation where he made a fictional sister, or if it's symbolic for something 🤷 I Live Alone is also one of the only songs in general that manages to make me emotional and I have no idea why this one is so special in that regard- and finally, Flowers of the Field was an iTunes exclusive song I think? So it's not that surprising you don't know it. That said, it's genuinely in my top 3 songs of that album it's so good Edit 5: Dementia is indeed a collaboration with Mark Hoppus from Blink-182! Edit 6: I swear when I first heard Lonely Lullaby my immediate assumption because of the tone was that Anne Marie had died or something and I was very relieved to hear that that isn't the case, and that the breakup was mutual and one of them just moved away and they couldn't make the relationship work Edit 7: Hospital Flowers did involve an actual car crash, but it was something that happened to his friend and not Adam himself. He said in a commentary that he witnessed said friend change his outlook on life through his recovery from the crash Edit 8: "She was a gymnast happily swinging on the uneven bars tucked in a somersault" from super Honeymoon might be what you're looking for in terms of a Maybe I'm Dreaming trapeze-esque reference Edit 9: I have the opposite feelings about Field Notes as you lol- It's still amazing ofc, but it's one of my least favorites of the album honestly. And fun fact about this song is that, in a similar vein to Sons of Thunder, it was entirely based on a Bible story. I'm not super religious (ironic for an Owl City fan i know) so idk how to-the-letter accurate it is to the original story, but I thought that was pretty cool Edit 10: As a fellow Minnesotan, the Vitamin Sea music video is one of my favorite music videos he's done. I love seeing him play in the snow like a kid at the beach, it's adorable :) Also 'i wonder how cold it is' Very. It's very cold Edit 11: I am also a Tip of the Iceberg enjoyer and you're so right, songs about freezing to death really is an untapped market in pop music lol but it really should be more popular in my opinion. And Vanilla Twilight was the song that officially convinced me to listen to his music because after hearing that, Fireflies, WCISYA, and Silhouette and realizing they were all made by him I thought 'hey this guy has not let me down yet, let's see what else he's got' As a last note, I do recommend listening to his new songs for the Deluxe version of Coco Moon. One is technically a cover of a song called Boston but it sounds really good, and the other is Car Trouble which was originally a demo called Floppy Fish he released only on Tumblr(?) and he finally turned it into its own full fledged song that I really think brings back the vibes of his older sillier stuff, which I like a lot. If you actually read all this one year late, thank you. It's nice to find another person who gives Adam Young the appreciation he and his music deserve. As for my favorite Owl city song, I genuinely don't think I could pick just one. A couple that I know are high on the ranks though, are Tip of the Iceberg (no I'm not just saying that because you mentioned it), Sons of Thunder, and Under The Circus Lights, although those two might have slight recency bias. Anyway, sorry for all the text, I just really like sharing information about stuff I'm interested in so I hope that wasn't too annoying. I will be going from this video directly to listen to your own covers and original work, I wish you the best :)
Masterpiece!! The guy on the guitar seems pretty confused though, playing all the wrong notes all along.
The Tornado is royal tier and you can't tell me otherwise!
Loved the playful vibe of this song!!
Thanks!! ☺️ So glad you liked it! This video was a blast to film
tip of the iceberg and the saltwater room have to be two of my all time favorite songs ever
🧹
The real one 🧹🪄
Jerome Kern was a huge name back then. You're probably going to be hearing his songs through at least the 50s. Also, that Ella Fitzgerald clip is not a music video. It's from an Abbot and Costello movie. They were a comedy team that started on vaudeville and made movies in the 40s and 50s.
🧡🧡🧡

Fire as usual 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks so much man!!
This was a wonderful treat to listen to and watch. Bravo amigo bravo 👏🌹 encore encore 🫶

Yessssss finally time to party
Woohoo!!!!! I love this song so much 🥹😍🥰
You heard it first 🙃 so if it was terrible all responsibility is on you to stop me
@@JoelAbshier Well good thing I have impeccable taste :P
OK, I was born in 82 and I have a business major with a minor and jazz and I’m a pro jazz player. I am well aware of all the music that comes out now because I have to play it, but I am super aware of every song you went through Because there are so many jazz bands of performers that have redone them. Also if you go over to classical music the opera singers have redone these songs so we are now in the world where the artist is King but up until 1978. The song was King, which means that a song it’s written it gets reperform over and over again because it’s popular and that’s how you get a hit record not because we like the wiggle of the person singing. Also, you should probably get a little bit more into the theory of the music so that you can better enjoy songs that actually have heavier complex Merrit you kind of had the right idea on begin the Beguine
If you like that music, I might cautiously recommend the British TV series Pennies From Heaven with Bob Hoskins (or the inferior movie version from the 80s with Steve Martin), which brilliantly features a lot of beautiful songs from the 30s - and ruins them brutally by the context they are placed in. It definitely is an experience.
Loved this video and agree with most all of your takes. The only two songs I can think of by him that I didn't hear mentioned were "In Christ Alone" and "How Deep the Father's Love For Us". They weren't released on any official album capacity but are very much Owl City songs instrumentally and vocally.
Thanks so much! I actually never have heard his version of How Deep the Father's Love for Us 👀👀👀 thanks for showing me a new song. I love his version of In Christ Alone! It's one of my favorite versions of that song. I don't think I mentioned it in the video, but I skipped over cover songs for the video and just did originals. So that's why these got skipped. In Christ Alone is definitely S-tier though
Update: I listed to How Deep the Father's Love for Us. So goooood! It's such a treat to hear a "new" song from that era
@@JoelAbshier I didn’t realize that was a direct cover, so I guess that was my mistake but you are correct. Beautiful cover though. And yeah, he adds personality and innocence in a way to everything he writes. I love it so much. Great video. Loved it.
@FrankReynolds182 thanks so much! And thanks for sharing ❤️
@ No, thanks for an amazing video and sharing all this. I’m sorry to blow up your comments section with my nonsense , but I love Owl City very much. You see, I’m an adult now of course, but I found and started listening to Owl City when I was young and when I hear his songs, it takes me back to basting Maybe I’m Dreaming or Ocean Eyes on my boom box while my sister and I played outside or went swimming with my friends in our cheap inflatable pool, sun shining, no bills or concerns to worry about, just fun music and beautiful weather. When I listen to him even now as an adult with a full time job and a family that I love and take care of, it just takes me back to a simpler time. You can’t assign a value to that kind of beautiful nostalgia and innocence. Thank you again and I wish you all the best.
I haven't watched the video yet but here are my favorite Owl City tracks and I'm interested to see how we compare. I love Adam Young's music so so much. My faves are: 1. Technicolor Phase 2. Dementia 3. In Christ Alone (I Stand) 4. Bonus Pick: Captains of the Sky (from Sky Sailing!)
WAIT! I FORGOT ABOUT HOT AIR BALOON! Hot Air Balloon goes #2
I love that you gave them first! Hog Air Balloon and Captains of the Sky are some of my favorites too!!
Fun! FYI - Somebody to Love is by Queen - written by Freddie Mercury.😉
Oh no 😳😳 why did I write Elton John lol! Thank you!!
cant wait
I'll see you at the premiere 😉
Apparently you're not aware of the brass band tradition of sticking your "best" trumpet on the acoustic guitar so nobody gets...overshadowed...
What?!? You don't like Rogue One? That part aside great video!
Not bad ranking at all, love the sequels we’re taking out asap lol, and being a huge revenge of the Sith fan, destroyed me to see it at 6, but still was a damn good list!
Yeah man 🤣🤣 I didn't even do it intentionally... The sequels just have so little to offer in terms of music lol. I fought myself so much on the top 6 though. Honestly it was so hard to put any of those at #6. If I made a tier list it would've been a clean sweep of S-tier
For real! All the OG themes and Prequels are all too Tier music regardless of the movie
awesome video! Isnt the rise of skywalker ending theme same as the one at the end of return of the jedi?
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it! And dang...lol I hadn't listened to victory Celebration for so long since I decided on using Emperor's theme for this video.... It really is almost identical. 💀💀💀
Great ranking, personally I would have put duel of the fates and battle of the hero's higher, great video.
Thanks so much!! Yeah the top 5 were honestly so hard to order. My first run through I actually put Duel of the Fates as my #1 but eventually talked myself down
I cannot put into words how much I disagree with some off these picks(we disagree, so what?) but still nice video. Good to see a different perspective
this video needs more recognition
Thank you!!
from Ohio here, LOVE the song you choose for Ohio, I really don’t like 21pilots either so this was great
So glad you liked it!! Steven is one of my all tome favorites!
This changed my life!
The key change tho!!!!
Glad you liked it! 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗 And yesss I love this keychange
but you ARE SPECIAL
Awww 🤗🤗
the mario jingle was to remind you to continue Paper Mario 🤭
Hehe.... I actually have an episode filmed
Where's Ridiculously Happy? I love that one so much, especially with the lyrics. It's just so bubbly and captures the feeling so well.
scored 131. not bad for a retired musician I would say xD cool video
Dang! That's a killer score! 🥳🎶 And thank you!
Scored 106
Nice job! 🥳
I just finished the video and gotta say, not bad. Actually, really really nice...for...for..........FOR A POP MUSICIAN 😅😅😅😅
Are you a bot?
What kind of cruel monster did all of those 2nds in a row!
I know!! 😭 Answering so many of the same in the row on a test is the hardest thing
OWL CITY MENTIONED 🗣 ✨️
for me Bloodstream is GOD
Favorite song is Enchanted cover of Taylor swifts song
These a some good tips! Rhyming dictionaries always come in clutch! 🙌🏻
Thanks so much! Sorry I missed your comment until now! Absolutely the rhyming dictionaries can be a lifesaver 😅 I try to spend time learning words ahead of time so that when I am writing, the rhymes come more from my head than referencing. But that's tough when I'm stuck on a lyric 🙃
🐧
🐧
1:35:24 The Field Notes song has even deeper meaning than that, it is a story from the Bible, the Parable of the Hidden Treasure from Matthew 13:44 😊 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field”. Salvation in Christ is worth everything we have, even if to the outside world, it may just look like a worthless patch of dirt. ❤
I thought I was one of the Main Fans For Owl City Makes Me Happy Someone else Respects real Art in Music like I Do!
My favorite album by Owl City is Cinematic. It just honestly gives me nostalgia, especially New York City and Montana. I was 9 when it came out, and I am turning 16 this year, so it's the soundtrack to my late childhood. I love all of these songs, and kudos to Adam and how he's created amazing songs over his career and I am glad to call him one of my all-time favorite artists.
Great video 😊 You gave a detailed explanation on the structure of songwriting. I personally don't write music but if i do, I know more about the importance of creating a story by writing down the beginning and ending before filling in the missing details. I noticed many popular songs follow the same composition structure but you made me realize new patterns that I sometimes forget about. Keep it up! 🤗❤
Great tier list! 🤗 It was fun hearing your thoughts on each song but I also appreciated hearing you explain it's purpose in the story of the musical. I agree with ^ @thejellyblish1 above, I'd love to see you do a tier list on Dear Evan Hansen. That's also a great musical and personally one of my favorites! I personally would've ranked Popular higher into the Royalty tier. It's one of my all time favorite show tunes sung by Kristin Chenoweth and it was one of the songs that got me into the musical before I watched it (such as seeing it be covered on Glee) Amazing video as always! Would be cool to see you do tier lists on more musicals and I agree it would've been better to end Wicked with For Good, such a heart-warming moment 🧹
One song I didn't see you rank was Bright Eyes - if I reckon, Adam is a big fan of the book and movie Watership Down, as it's evident by the way he references a chapter of the book in Honey and the Bee (''the crow and the beanfield'', title of chapter 9). Bright Eyes is a song featured in the original 1978 movie and sung by Art Garfunkel, but funnily enough, I prefer his version way more. Not like the og one is bad by any means, but Owl City is my favorite artist and the way he covers the song hits a good spot for me. A match made in Heaven. I know he's also covered Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King, but if I remember correctly he only covered the first verses and the song barely reaches the 1-minute mark. There's also Helicopter Moon which I'm SO SAD he never finished! It has such a nice rhythm and build-up! Out of all his Christmas songs, Kiss Me Babe, It's Christmas Time feels super nostalgic to me even if it's a little more 'typical' sounding and ties with Humbug a little bit (simply cause Humbug is so dang funny LOL) Also, The Tornado paints such clear imagery of what he's telling, and as someone who's super afraid of thunder, when I first listened to it, it gave me A LOT of anxiety just cause the chaos of the bridge and the way he screams just brings back the exact feelings of vulnerability and danger I experience when there's a thunderstorm. That song is a RIDE for me, and when the chaos ends and the rest of the song softens and everything's calm and safe again, it brings a tear to my eye and comfort to my heart. It's so satisfying. Fireflies I really like and it was the first song I heard of him on the radio, it was the song that introduced me to him back in the 2000s and it brings back so many memories and makes my imagination fly so much. Probably among my favorites. I know it's the song everyone knows from him and it was also kinda meme'd to death some years ago, but I didn't really pay any attention to that and just enjoy the song for what it is, I got so much to thank it for for introducing me to my favorite artist, even if there's other songs that deserve attention too.
Wow you absolutely crushed this.
