My name is JM Celi and I'm the author of the Lisa Cooper vampire story series. On my channel, I talk about my own writerly journey and experiences as well as tons of fun fantasy fiction content in the way of worldbuilding, creepy creatures, myths & lore, and more!
Story Deconstruction | First Sentences & First Chapters
You may have heard of story deconstruction before. It's a pretty decent way to dissect books in your genre to see what makes them tick. For this video, I've selected the first book of a few popular urban fantasy series to explore their commonalities.

I love the native beleafs. what a rich belief
I wrote a novel that's not really fantasy fiction, per se, but historical fiction (albeit with a shade of horror to it). My main character is a shillelagh-wielding Irishman in the Old West.
@@Outrider74 That sounds awesome! What year?
@@authorjmceli 1885. The setting is a walled city near the Canadian border in an otherwise uninhabited area. I'm trying to get people to proofread it for me before I publish it, but my readers are not doing a great job of getting back to me :(
A person needs to like writing. Not do it for the money. 😂 this service is bad and they are quitting the service by 2025
@@DanielReviewsStuff 100%. I filmed this before Amazon made the announcement. I'm not surprised.
@@authorjmceli I have a second channel I’m on more than this. It’s called. DanielDoesLife. I do Walmart workouts and other things. I write and at times make art videos. I’m interested in buying your books soon.
They are fully giving up on Vella and shot themselves in the foot
thanks and like your explaination with soft music.
Your welcome. :)
I think Kindle V expected authors to drive their own readers towards their scripts with the hope that readers would also view other series offered in the "if you liked this, then you might enjoy this" however not only was it difficult to find a series if you don't have the direct link but the pricing was confusing, not everyone could access the story vault if they either didn't have an Amazon account or was locked out due to not being able to verify the account. I had readers that found it too much to try and navigate the site and had to be educated which sucks bc not everyone is going to hang around for the instruction. Authors were getting upset with trying to figure out and determine their profits based on bonuses and the unclear way which bonuses were paid out . Just wasn't structured well at all
@@nicolefarmer2512 100%!
I loved this! Great examples.
Thank you!!
Oh, the first sentence struggle is tough. There is so much pressure to come up with the perfect 20 or so combination of words. Thanks for giving examples from exemplary books that didn't have earthshattering starts.
@@Running2Write I think you did a topic similar to this on your channel. Good stuff! And I agree about that first sentence. I also don't let it stress me out. If I lose a reader after one sentence, I'm not sure I'd keep them through the entire book.
Is this an exercise you've ever done before? I did it years ago on one of my first manuscripts (yet to be unpublished), but never returned to the method until recently. How about you?
So much pressure is put on that first sentence in the first draft! I hate it 😂
Me too!! But I did geek out a little on looking at how other authors did theirs. :)

It's a fun problem, imo. :)
I literally have this problem in my book with the name Chloe. 😂
Chloe is such an old name! But yes, I see your problem. :)
@ It’s ancient, even! Was an epithet of Demeter
@@authoreloisebahr holy cow!
It's a shame. Do you think Amazon was trying to crush the competition by giving major discounts for readers and bonuses for authors?
I'm not sure. When they gave the big discounts to readers, they sort of tanked the bonuses for authors. :)
I'm actually a bit relieved. I'm free to post the whole thing as a novel now and already have the first book set to release next month.
That's fantastic!
Hi Sir, Are you looking for a professional youtube thumbnail designer?
Actually, the change to every episode being 10 tokens happened at the same time as the change to 10 free episodes in mid-March, so it was a double whammy all at once. My largest episode was 28 tokens, so dropping to 10 was painful. Also, I had some large episodes between from episodes 4 to 10, since we had originally been told only the first 3 would be free, so then the first 10 becoming free was pretty brutal. My biggest problem with Kindle Vella was Virginia Milner told people in many interviews in 2021 that KV would go global, but they never even tried. Serialized stories are much more popular in Europe than the U.S., and KDP never brought us to that audience. I had people from other countries ask about reading my stories, but had no way of doing so. Also, readers hated the tokens business model. I saw plenty of stories get 1-star reviews, not for the story, but because readers hated the tokens and felt it was a rip off. I wish Kindle Vella had been a subscription, where the reader pays a set amount and could read all the Kindle Vella they wanted, then the money would be divided based on how much was read from each author. Kindle Vella also seemed to have poorly educated programmers, because the actual function of the platform was really sketchy. The bottom line is that Kindle Vella was always treated as the stepchild of Amazon, not having the effort behind it that other parts of KDP/Amazon did, like we couldn't put any graphics in the stories, even though Kindle can. Heck, we weren't even allowed to run Amazon ads for Kindle Vella. It was ridiculous the way Kindle Vella was treated as lesser. All that said, I'm grateful that it motivated me to write consistently after many years of writer's block, and I met many wonderful authors with whom I want to continue to have in my life and writing journey.
I'm relieved! It was sad to see kindle Vella, what it became, and sad to see the wasted potential. I'm glad they closed it out. There are better things, and will be better things.... I glad they tried it, I wish they had been able to make it more accessible, but I think the absence of that accessibility made it really a sad experiment. :(
Totally agree. I feel like there were a lot of great stories on KV that never got the visibility they deserved, and now they can sort of be set free to venture into the world as novels. :)
I didn't mind the serialized approach and if did i could always wait until all the episodes had dropped and then read them. I agree with you about the marketing. First time I heard of it was from you and I rarely come across anyone else who knows about tis existence
@@ericcrockwell11 right? I didn't mind the serialized release either.
It’s so odd because Webtoons is doing great things and is just a more visual take on serialized storytelling, so there’s for sure an audience out there that enjoys little bite sized bits (myself included). Definitely Vella not doing what they needed to do to get the word out.
@@authoreloisebahr that's a great comparison!
Looking past the obvious region restrictions, confusing payment system, I just can't understand why Kindle Vella wasn't available on, you know, the kindle?!
WHAT?!
@authoreloisebahr I believe it was app only.
@@faldor yea, the Kindle app on my phone? Sure. My actual kindle? No. There should have been a Vella app. Out of the gate, Anazon never really committed to it.
When they gave away the first 10 episodes it really hurt me because my story was only 15 episodes
@@marialeeper-uj8mr ouch. Sorry, that's a shame.
What? Oh wow!
Seems like you got out right on time 🥲
Oh yea. I bailed a few months ago when they made changes in April. 10 free episodes instead of 3 and my bonuses tanked. Then they made the change where all episodes were 10 tokens a piece. I would have lost even more. Mismanaged platform and then they screwed over their authors. Oof.
Are you a Kindle Vella author? What is your strategy or next steps after Vella is gone?
I pulled 6 of my stories for the same reason. I’m pulling the last one soon since they are shutting the platform down.
I don't blame you!
Interesting. This seems like it could be a high risk, high reward to add an interlude.
@@bpick05 100%! I'd love to do some, but.... yea.
What makes an interlude different than a multi POV? is it that it’s from a character outside of the established POV characters?
@@authoreloisebahr with an interlude, you typically hit the POV of a character not in the "roster" of characters featured in the rest of the book (and only get one or two). That, or focused on a main or side character doing something specifically "off to the side" and not pushing either a side or main story forward. These are self-containted little vignettes in your book that are often in their own bubble.
