I enjoyed the photos and your commentary. Would love to see a review of the Voigtlander Ultron 28mm on the ZF. Do you find smudging or other IQ problems wide-open on the Nikon Z sensor? Did you compare it with the small Nikon 28 mm F2.8 SE lens? I’ve read the Ultron Needs to be stopped down to F4 or 5.6 to get good sharpness and contrast across the frame. A really nice compact 28 mm walk around would complete the ZF kit for me. The new Thypoch 28mm f/ 1.4 is tempting, but I don’t really need such a fast , and rather large wide lens.

@@RBRowe7 may have to make a full review at some point but it’s fabulous throughout the aperture range. I have not used the 28mm SE but own the 40mm SE. I have read and seen nice things about the Thypoch too but am thrilled with the sharpness of the Ultron II. It pops off the screen!

The Zf is finally the camera that got me to jump to mirrorless. I'm a professional photographer and I've been loathe to start that journey because of how much extra work it entails. Or at least that's what I thought. And sure there are definitely some growing pains associated with learning an entirely new system. But just over a week in using my Zf now and I've found it's actually more joy than work. Joy at seeing just how incredible this camera is. Nikon put so much *thought* into how it's crafted. It's sensor isn't too much for the internals. The autofocus system is other-worldly, seriously, there isn't a camera at the price point that can keep up with it (I think it would even trade blows with most Sonys favorably). The dials are a blast to use when I'm shooting slow moving things or just having fun and shooting street, it brings the tactile nature of cameras back to front and center. The 24mp sensor might not win the award for highest resolution but it's utterly brilliant, low light performance is astonishing. I don't even feel the need to run any NR passes on ISO 6400-8000 and even at 12,800 I have fully *usable* images. With all of that above said, I would have been happy and totally unsurprised if Nikon had just thrown a standard video kit on it and called it a day. Nope, they went with 10bit recording and some truly stellar video quality. All mashed into a portable camera, which, while not lightweight, is *far* lighter than DSLR bodies. I always thought I'd be compromising with my first mirrorless. I haven't found a single area where I'm wishing for something more -- this camera is nothing short of astonishing. The fact they did this on a retro-styled camera is just wild to me. Prior to this one of my favorite cameras of all time was the D500, another camera that really has no place in the grander lineup that Nikon is known for. Turns out, I tend to like the dark horse cameras. I know that the Z6IIIs, Z8s, and the more standard bodies from Fuji and Sony are going to get a lot of attention, but IMO the Zf is one of the best cameras ever made when you consider the value it provides. It has breathed new life into my photography and allowed me to express myself artistically in a way I wasn't sure was possible -- it's just so easy for the camera to match the vision I have in my head when I go to snap an image, and the hardware does what I want *every* time. It doesn't miss. My AF system is set up to standard autofocus with a narrower back button autofocus. This lets me override the AF if I want to zero in on a region of an image. And that punch to zoom is also such a stellar addition and even works on MF lenses. It's just a really, seriously, complete camera that takes stunning images.

Older Fuji sensors had problems in Lightroom but that’s no longer true especially for the 40Mpix sensor. I can just encourage everyone to download raw files of the test image from the dpreview website for different camera brands and compare them in Lightroom. Just try to match them as close as possible. What you will observe is that you will end up with almost identical results except that Nikon applies more noise reduction on their raws at higher ISO values (with the downside of loosing more details). Keep in mind that for apsc equivalent settings are roughly half the ISO and one f-stop down. So as long as you use your f2 lens on the Nikon, there is no low light advantage versus the Fuji with a f1.4. As long as you don’t want that really shallow depth of field or fast zoom lenses, the perceived full frame advantage is a myth.

I believe the comparison between a lower end Fuji camera and the Nikon Zf is somewhat unfair. I have the XT5 and it is a wonderful camera. Paired with Fuji or Viltrox lenses, it has the ability to produce wonderful images. If it is paired with the Viltrox 27mm 1.2, it captures great low light pictures. That said, I also shoot with a Nikon D610 and a Nikon Z50. I will soon be purchasing a Zf so I can continue using my Nikon lenses, and put my D610 to pasture. But I’m definitely not getting rid of the XT5 anytime soon. It is a wonderful camera that provides a great vintage experience, albeit with modern hardware. To me, it’s the best of both worlds. Happy shooting! 📸

You will soon discover that auto ISO in Nikon is not the same concept as in Fujifilm. Nikon's feature should have been named "ISO assist" or something :). If you feel the need to go back and forth between auto and manual ISO in Nikon then you are probably still thinking like a Fujifilm shooter. There is no "auto" ISO in the Zf. It is always manual even if the so called "auto ISO" is turned on. The only thing that auto ISO does is increase your ISO over your current manual setting and up to the configured maximum if and only if the latter is greater than the former and the shutter speed drops lower than its configured minimum. Now how often do you change your mind about how high the camera is allowed to bring its ISO without asking you? Practically never. Yeah we all agree that a hardware switch for auto ISO would have been nice but think about it for minute and you will find that adding an A position in the ISO dial like Fujifilm does, cannot work simply because auto ISO in Nikon does not mean "not manual". So you still need the ISO dial even when ISO is set to auto. Think about it.

Switching to Nikon was one of the best decisions I have ever made. With the ZF, I find it hard to imagine buying another Fuji camera. I was a diehard Xpro3 shooter. I doubt a XPro4 could make me go back. I haven't entirely given up on Fuji. I still enjoy my 50R, X100V, and XE2.

2024 and I just received my graphite edition from MPB. Our camera body timeline is scarily similar lol though, I still have my T3i, Canon R, and X-E2s.

Really nice video! I'm totally fascinated by Fuji's system. At moment I have got an old Nikon d5200 with several lens but is quite heavy and sometimes frustrating so I wanna change it. I'm totally lost for the x-pro2 and the x100v. The X-pro2 is easier to recover at the moment even at a lower price (~800€ solo body) but the manageability, lightness of the x100v really appeals to me, especially because it could be that camera to take on trips in your backpack and travel light or that helps you get back to photography while having fun. On the one hand the X-pro2 has the flexibility on the other the x100v has the lightness and manageability. What do you think about it?

Hmmm, truly can’t go wrong with either. I have never personally owned an X100V but have friends that have and have heard nothing but great things. The X100V is certainly a bit more compact but the versatility and aesthetic of the XPro just does it for me.

@@EliBeaversonVisuals yes, that is true. The X-pro2 has a timeless design and more versatility. I have to find one and take in hand. I already know that the x100v would lead me to spend a lot more money because then I would also like the X-pro2 to do more serious jobs when requested by the customer. If I'm lucky with 1100 bucks I should be able to find everything I need, X-pro2 + 23mm.

Great video and I agree, the Fuji pro line is sleek in design and simple in looks but these only serve to mask a truly creative tool that is a joy to use.

Good video; an engaging story told with a casual enthusiasm. Thank You! I have been a Canon 7d-mkII shooter but got a used Fuji X100 (original) off of Craigslist and I love it! I have been waffling on the next Fuji step of Xpro-1 or -2… we’ll see :) I wish you well on your image aquisition journey 👍
