Welcome to Sailing Schmitten! Heidi and Byron here, sharing our sailing experience with family and friends.
We've been sailing together since 2013. In October 2023 we moved our Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42' from Lake Texoma to Kemah, Texas, with hopes of starting to cruise the Caribbean in early 2024.

Enjoying the videos. How do you like the portabote as a dinghy?
Fellow TH-camrs... gotta love dolphins! th-cam.com/video/xvkm7bIo-IQ/w-d-xo.html
Fell in love with God in a bran new way.❤
Hello fellow Kemite! Kemanian? Ahem... I left Kemah two years ago for the Bahamas and decided not to come back (well, not on the boat anyway). Nothing quite like the GoM with a full moon, unmarked dark rigs, and steep seas. Maybe I'll see you back out here in 2025.
Kemahmites? haha. If you've been out for 2 years then you must be having a good time! Cheers.
Happy Sailing, thanks for sharing.
Tell me you know nothing about boating safety without telling me. (ie. see fenders left on deck while at sea, epic rookie move)
Thanks for your concern... of course it would be better if we stow the fenders. We do employ lots of safety procedures that we have learned over the years, not always evident in our videos. We choose to wear our life vests at all times, as well as being tethered to jack lines. We do not go forward unless both of us are on deck, and there are many other preventive measures that we take. I've watched a lot of sailing channels and I've seen that there is a wide range of adherence to boating safety out there, amongst sailors with lots of experience and those with very little. I guess it just depends on what one is comfortable with. We've been sailing together for 11 years, 10 of those years are lake experience and this is our first year on the ocean. We are ASA certified in 3 courses each and continue to learn as we go. I'm not sure we are 'rookies' as you say; we all have a lot to learn and practice.
Thanks for sharing! Beautiful sails!
Thanks! They performed so much better than the old ones!
The new sails are simply gorgeous! TY for sharing your adventures! Looking forward to January!
me too!
Enjoy the video. Texas our Texas.
Good! Thank you!
I grew up on Lake Texoma. Used to keep a Catalina 25 at Grandpappy Point Marina. Fun watching your progress.
Cool! We were at Grandpappy Point from 2013-2023! Dock 5 first with a Compac 19, then later with a Catalina 30. Then we were on dock 9 with this boat.
Great channel. Have fun.
Great production. Nice video. Well done!
Compared to numerous TH-cam 'drama', you tell an honest and sincere story of true life ups and downs. Do not change a thing!
Thanks so much!

You should consider telling the story in front of the camera! You have a great voice but it comes across a bit scripted! You can still do the script but maybe tell the story mostly from memory using the script to keep you on track! It's okay to make mistakes and think of it like telling the story to one of your guys friends! I think the scooter portion was perfect discussing why and how in front of the camera! I don't mean to sound nit picky as I loved the video but just wanted to give some tips! Keep up the good work guys an inspiration to all want to be sailors!
Thanks! I do want to improve on the narration and I appreciate your feedback. Good tips.
Looks like you're making Progress on the boat chores! Well done!
Another great video! Thank you 😂
Great first episode! Looking forward to catching up on the next episodes. Meanwhile, Safe travels to you both!
Very well done !
Thank you!
Hi. Nice video and narration especially being in the Gulf of Mexico. May I give a few tips for your channel video titles and descriptions? Everything is about providing the algorithm and search engine information to understand your videos to show to interested viewers. For example your other video titles don't tell the algorithm enough information to know the video pertains to sailing. "Our Solar Panel System" could be about a house, a barn, a RV. Instead try a title such as "Sailing with the [XYZ] solar panel system." That way the title mentions sailing and the specific type of solar system. You'll get more views because the algorithm can now find people interested in sailing and/or solar panels. Good luck, and I will be following.
Ok, thanks!
About how many N.Miles was this trip ?
About 460 nm
Wonderful voyage! We will be following you from El Jardin (Seabrook) TX. Safe travels. Thanks!
Thank you!
@@SailingSchmitten When time permits, might you talk us through your water-maker set up. Not a hurry. Thanks!
Love my Mantus anchor. Funny, when I went to that same warehouse to pick mine up it was raining both times as well. :)
Ha! How funny. Nice people there!
Hello neighbors from Kemah! We are in Kemah also and been wanting to go to Florida once our sailboat is ready. Glad you shared some info about your journey. Fair winds and good luck on your journey ⛵
Howdy! We hope your time comes soon!
Hey Austin Good luck buddy, I left from the Portofino.
Great video, I left Waterford in feb for the loop but ended up with engine issues in Port Arthur. Came back and will re-depart in Dec 24
Really nice video.
Thanks, friends!

I work in the MP299 fld off Louisiana. I saw yall pass by us. I'm glad to see yall make it. It looked like yall were moving super slow. Lol.
Wow, so cool that you saw us! What is the lat long of MP299? We are curious about when we passed. Yes, we averaged 5.5 kts, so we look pretty slow.
Also, we are curious about what date/time you may have seen us and whether it was before or after the storm we were in. Just trying to put together the pieces.
If it was you. It would've been between the 22nd and 23rd. I'm not sure the exact dates.
Just found your channel and enjoying the videos. Texas our Texas. From College Station.
Great! Gig 'em Aggies!
What kind of sailboat were you sailing?
We are in a 2006 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42’
First time viewer, your narration is easy on the ears. Glad you made it safely to Pensacola.
Thanks!
I love your video❤
Thank you!
Stop in port St. Joe. The beach is the best by far. You can also take the canal if your mast is under 62’ It will take you out to dog island and then down to clear water. We sailed south and there is a gap you go thru offshore where the water is so deep blue. We saw a ton of sea turtles and dolphins
I love the turtle club lmao, safe travels, Semper Fi and Erin go Braugh
I like to go way out offshore around the oil patch. Its a lot less stressful. A whole lot less rigs and ships and lots less stressful. Way too much going on closer in.
We will definitely be doing it that way next time.
You only go way out in the gulf in the summer. Atleast in a sailboat like that. The cold fronts blow through, the waves get big from all direction. Extremely tough on a boat, especially when the go for 36 hours or more. Cruising on a boat is also very hard on the structure. So if you want to go far you got to balance all that.
@@trevorlahey1956 Sounds like you have only read about it, never actually done it.
@@SOLDOZER lol I’m an active cruiser
It's called "a weather window." You can go anywhere at any time if the conditions are good.
Is there a reason you didn't configure your LiPo batteries to take a charge from the alternator? I'm in the beginning stages of planning my electrical upgrade, and from what I understand, you might have to upgrade alternators and the attached controllers to avoid damage to the system, but it's doable. I'm hoping to put two high output alternators on my engine to reduce need for a generator. Speaking of... Do y'all have a generator?
I did not isolate the lipo from the alternator as initially planned. That way we kept the flooded battery charged from the alternator. That being said, we almost never run the engine if we can help it. There is no generator.
Lithium and solar technology is getting good and upgrading alternators would almost be foolish. Only reason to have a diesel generator is if you have a large boat with air conditioning blasting all the time.
Just found you guys... What a great trip! What exactly happened to your rigging? Do you know how it got damaged? Was there anything you could have done to prevent it? Were you able to have it fixed or fix it yourself once at anchor?
Initially commissioned as a like boat, there was not a 4 way turnbuckle installed. 2 way only. We got into the heavy storm and went from rail to rail as we climbed and then slammed down waves. I think the proper rigging system would have prevented that. Our current rigger noted that some European boats just don’t rig in this manner. It is rigged properly now.
Pretty good.
I am glad to see the Houstob ship channel. I had family there and wasvin Houston a number of times, but never saw it. I am surprised at how big it is.
First voyage!! Can’t imagine how dark it can get out there. Sounds like a great shakedown trip. Looking forward to hearing about the trip eastward. The videos are amazing!
Thanks! It is dark, thank goodness for the moon!
Nice work. Thank you for the update. Fair winds and following seas shipmates
Thanks! Good to hear from you. Fair winds to you as you head south.
Fascinating!! Wonder regularly what it even possibly be like. Safe travels! I think this could me a little more challenging than coaching little girls!
It’s a different kind of challenge that’s for sure! It’s just amazing being out in nature and finding out what you are up for. Good thing the boat can take more than we can.
LiPo batteries will last 10+ years, are very light weight, and can discharge to near zero % vs. AGM lead acid. Are the panels rigid or flexible? Safe travels!!
We went with the flexible panels, only about 10 lbs each.
@@SailingSchmitten Why did you choose the flexible panels over the rigid ones?
@@davelong1147 We were originally going to mount them on the bimini so we wanted the lighter weight for that reason. It didn't work out to mount them on bimini and we already owned them so we just built the structure for them.
@@davelong1147 Flexible panels technology is starting to catch up to rigid. Bouge RV Arch have 10 year warranty. Their CIGS panels have 25 year warranty.
