Thoughtful and well explained as usual. Thanks guys.
This is great advice and a great way of thinking. Too many people see limiting and clipping as strictly bad and only needed for level, when in reality sometimes the SOUND of clipping and/or limiting adds the character we love in a finished record. Clipping can add excitement, and limiting can add glue.
Just make a Lursen Mastering Console 2 and we are going to be very happy😃
I have a question what speaker did used ? Looks like atc but which atc ?
Love how you do not edit, lol
Is there difference with hardware and software l2? Which one do you use?
Hi! Super informative video Thank you! Just one question… at what volume are you liseting to this tones to be safe for the Ears?
Agree with EQ before compression/limiting. Nice.
Just wondering why you're not using the ATR's bridge meters and XLR outputs? Another way to adjust the azimuth is to use an oscilloscope and look at the Lissajous curve.
You're an excellent teacher. So deftly described. I understood something about eq I've never really thought about before - something becomes stronger when you eq elsewhere. Thank you.
Same thought process for BIT RATE ?
Looking forward to the ilmultimedia mock of your structure.
Cmonnnn I’m getting antsy ! 😂
😒
Thanks for the video. Which Manley version are you using?
What's your favorite compressor for vocals?
im just a amateur hobbyist with no budget/skill beyond nebula libraries that copy hardware. BUT my go to are tim pethericks summit tla-100a (medium, medium just always sounds good to me) or his STA leveler. he is releasing cl1b around the corner, his are supposed to the best available in the box i am always curious how they compare to the real things. i think i'm gonna buy a bus compressor soon to test it out myself, currently use his SSL all the time but want some hardware to see.
thats such a good idea
Great idea guys!
🙌
I can feel the juicy warmth of that Neve all the way over here in Culver City!
Great and lovely piece of german engineering
So no sound demo? :D
I always thought the boost was a tilt style eq.
I vastly prefer Blue Stripe 1176s to the blackface versions because of their unique midrange saturation. :)
What kind of Deesser (brand, model) do you have in your mastering chain?
Nice!
. Well, the motive to purchase one over the other differs by intended use. AE's look at gear choices as tools for a job. No one is going to find a Mola Mola Tambakee DAC in a mastering booth whereas Mr. Deepockets thinks it looks impressive on a glass shelf. Same with active/passive monitors. Decision making regarding cash outlays for business equipment acquisitions are made with quite different weights than a residential consumer. Tools and equipment may be expensed and/or depreciated on profit/loss statements, tax filings etc., etc. If a business owner chooses gear with the same considerations as a consumer, then they won't be in business long. Acid Jazz, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊
What is the main piece you’re working with?
In this case, an EAR 825 tube EQ, combined with a GML 9500, into a Smart Research C1 compressor.
Awesome! Rueben is the man. Also - I read "Taco Tuesday" for some reason. No complaints though! Three of my favorite things, Tacos, Fairchilds (Fairchildren?), and Reuben :)
Great video. So how wide is the Q on this Lursen mastering EQ (how wide is the curve, shape ...) so that gives that perfect sound and 3KHZ influences with crossover frequencies 60 HZ and 6KHZ 120HZ? I wan't to replicate the same "curves" (Q settings) on different mastering EQ's, so I don't go too wide or too narrow ... I like Lursen mastering console stand alone plugin , but there's no info about crossover frequencies and shapes of the Q on 60 120 3 6 and 10KHZ ... I know it's reverse smiley concept that is top notch but what are the specifics of that smiley face? 60 and 10 khz form (I'm guessing) downward slope shape curve, 120 is how much Q wide bell, shape, 3 khz etc. ? if you can answer that it would be great. Everything else is known, this is still an enigma, haha
What do you think of voxengo teote
Would love to see a comparison of that one versus the Pulsar one. Was in love with the UAD version since the Pulsar come in.
Love these short videos. The vocal levels are very low and roomy, would suggest to up a bit. Keep up the good work!
No gimmicks.. something that just does the job
Thanks for sharing that
Is it 2004???
👍
You use it in mastering?
Yes!
Amazing - I'll watch any video you guys put out. I have been inspired by your signal flow in particular. EQ into Vari Mu; In this case instead of going with the Manley (which I also adore) I went with the Thermionic Culture Phoenix. Lovely unit, very rich and hi-fi. Big low end extension, neutral mids, and slightly hyped up top end. Sowter xformers. As much as I love it - I still also would love to have a Manley on hand too, since the flavors are quite different. Phoenix is a bit more groovy in its action, but it has insane headroom. Love Manley for its box tone and the "warm hug" it imparts. Thanks for this!
My take away from this: no recall - and if you use hand gestures, it will sound better
0:59 glitch?
I've worked with reel to reel decks since I was 15 years old when I worked at my first job in radio. I'm 61 now. I've never seen a deck where the REC head was on the left, and ERASE head was in the center! ???
Ihave dout sir... in the mix i using protools and luna, logic, where i want to put the lurseen plugin in the mix or master track...volume increse and down adjust also plse....
Could you do a series where viewers send you masters of their own work, and you can review them and point out how to improve? Thanks!
Funny you should mention this as we have been in discussions to do this. We’ll send you the info when it’s all in place.
@@LurssenMastering oh awesome. We would all love feedback from the best in the biz!!!!!
Guys what's wrong with you, where is Lurssen Mastering console 2 ? We are waiting
👀
THIS IS SOO TRUE!
Pushing into the compression, great, however, what are the settings on the compressor?
Ratio 2:1. Attack 30, release .1 set threshold based on amount of desired squeeze and makeup gain to taste.
@@reubencohen6476 Thanks, the tried and tested classic SSL bus comp territory.
So he is advocating using a Neve plugin on all tracks to achieve the cumulative analog feel? His recommendations are unclear.
We believe Kevin was referring to some of the benefits when recording all elements through analog circuitry, and the advantages that can come through these practices. That’s not to say that all arrangements will necessarily benefit from this type of treatment. But arrangements that have more organic elements can certainly benefit from the accumulation of analog captures and processing on the individual elements before summed and mixed. This can be achieved through hardware, but also through analog modeled digital plug-ins in similar ways.

Good stuff!
This was fantastic, thank you so much Gavin! 😊🙏🏻
please consider a gain compensation in a update and visual limiter reduction meter.
