Personally, much as I enjoy LPs - their very physical presence, the sheer nostalgia of them, and their fascinating history - I believe the vinyl bubble will burst relatively soon. BTW, I share your interest in the violin repertoire, esp. concertos. You might consider sharing the history of your interest in same along with some of your favorites.
Based on what hard facts do you base that on ?, the official data for 24 was a 10.6% rise in vinyl, and CD,s flat. Overall revenue spent on music was the highest since 2002.
@@celtic-audiophile No hard facts at all, celtic, just my BELIEF that the market can not long bear these inflated prices. Some record store owners are reporting that recent vinyl product is being sold back to them at cut-rate value and they express alarm at that. Canary in the coal mine? Maybe. One thing only is for certain: it will be interesting!
Do you ever use headphones for listening? A good pair of headphones can sound as good as a REALLY good pair of speakers.
Happy new year 😊
Stu, Can I send you an HD Webcam as a late Christmas Present?
very kind of you but I do have an HD webcam which I did not use on this video. It is often a question of lighting as when lighting is bad, having an HD cam does not make it any better.
I'd be interested in hearing what your opinion of the Bach violin sonatas with Zuzana Ruzickova is. She's a wonderful harpsichordist, though she would be considered old-fashioned by some. Just in case you aren't aware, she wrote an autobiography which tells of how she rather miraculously lived despite being in concentration camps during WW II.
Happy New Year! That's a pretty poor show. The Manageresses around your way are taking all the good stuff home 😮
Please make more videos like this
Would you mind making a detailed video about the Archiv label?
Try this experiment... rip that same LP to your computer using the best gear you have access to. Or send it out to pro ripping service. Play those files in a low end dac. Or rip them to cd. Play that. And compare to lp playing live and that same commercial Mahler 2 cd. Chances are highly likely that cd was not well mastered for cd format. I have a vpi-19 `table, Rega rb300 arm and Sumiko bp Special mc cartridge. Phono preamp is Van Alstine fet-valve. And this and my previous phono systems have mostly sat idle since early 1986 when I purchased my first digital playback device. A low end but good-sounding Philips cd player. Since then, pc file playback of flac or wav, some cd rips, other highrez, some vinyl rips. Thru sub-$1000 dac like Musical Fidelity, Theta, Schiit, Denafrips, diy, etc. 50 years of hifi'ing convinces me that ... Final mastering -- even if it is cassette or 8 track--guided by mastering engineer is the most important factor, all else held equal.
lol ok will let you know
You can still find these Turnabouts in charity shops in New Zealand. Great covers and nice thick cardboard…and the music’s not bad either!
I really enjoy your videos but must disagree on one point: there are many recordings of Haydn Piano Sonatas and quite a few intégral issues on CD (about a dozen of them, I think). Perhaps you were thinking only of vinyl.
@@gregoryames2483 yes on vinyl I meant. On cd they have covered masses of obscure music.
Thankyou so much i had some virtually unplayable records .Tried this method and honestly they play like new now ..Happy new year and many thanks
On an average week, how much money do you spend on gas going from shop to shop?
@@rumpleforeskin1275 I dont drive to these shops. They are local.
CD CZ-800 knock off cartridge, ruby stylus, no dampening and tiny speakers, hence very poor sound quality. Tracks around 6 grams, but using a diamond stylus would reduce wear. Far better to save up for an AT LP 60 with powered speakers or start to build a vintage set up within your budget.
the descriptor terms are quite good. "A Bit Ropey" across the pond would be " a bit roached out".
My heart sinks when I read Evri is delivering. One of the bigger sellers on ebay uses them though thankfully most I buy from don't.
I find second hand classical records are more crackly than rock or pop.
Pop music generally fills the sound stage and imperfections are less noticeable than classical music which can have quiet passages. All the same my experience is that pop records are on average worse than classical for condition when bought from charity sources. The exception is popular classics type records (eg strauss waltzes) bought by the masses.
There are also one or two recordings of Haydn piano music on an early piano on the Astree label with Paul Badura Skoda. Ronald Brautigam also recorded all of them on BIS. If the rest of the performance on your LP is anything like the snippet you played, I think you bought a really nice performance.
I used to have that Astree record.
Upgrading a Rega 2 would make a massive difference to your listening pleasure, definitely change the cart. I had a fairly basic deck for 20 years, and can’t believe the difference small increments can make
I don't think so. I had "better" decks in the past and I was upgrading on systems that already provided me with immense listening pleasure. I get immense mind blowing listening pleasure from my Rega so do not feel the need to upgrade. But we are all different and good luck to you.
It’s a shame that the records need returning, but I think you are doing the right thing. And your turntable doesn’t need upgrading, it’s good enough for many years of listening pleasure…if anything I would consider different speakers, there’s good offers on Fyne Audio F500 speakers currently, around £500 which I think would be a considerable sound improvement but they would need to be on stands, though if you are happy with what you have then why change anything! Rooms have much impact on HiFi quality, yours does not look ideal, but hey, we have what we have and we make the best of it.
I could not return them as the seller refunded me before I could print out the shipping labels I purchased.
Salomon brought Haydn to London not Solomon!
Wonderful presentation again. Thank you for posting. We should all learn not to listen to the audio snobs, that our turntables aren't good enough. Nonsense. Yours is quite qualified for enjoyment and measurement of quality. How does the 'mixed label set' happen? Why would one be devalued? Also, I suggest that you turn off the fish tank water pump whilst filming. It's quite distracting.
It is not a fish pump. I live in a flat which overlooks a busy road.
I had the original Planar 2. It had a lifetime guarantee as all subsequent models have so can you elaborate on the " it broke down" comment. We have an awesome British company and I'm fed up with Linn fanboys with their sly and frankly underhand digs. Linn are more be and more dependent on outsourced kit.
This should have been attached to a thread. Apologies for my stupidity 😂
when did I say it broke down? I watched the whole video and don't say it anywhere.
Interesting as usual
I agree hmv is about too pricy for a new record, I perfer getting mine form charity shops.
Can you really return on ebay even if the seller says' no returns accepted' and there is nothing wrong with the record? I didn't think you could do that, unless the record was not as described.
If the seller does not take remorse returns then you cannot return. This seller allows remorse returns.
Hi
I’ve had a Bluetooth record player for Christmas this year. Iam collecting a few classical music records too. I get my vinyl form charity shops too, really cheap too.
Thanks for that illuminating video. I have the Eclipse fake stereo (ECS 518) of Erich Kleiber's deservedly famous Beethoven 5th Symphony and it sounds marvellous. A word of caution about playing back mono on modern stereo equipment. To get the best sound, with minimal background noise, you need a true mono cartridge or some way of altering the wiring to convert stereo to mono (you can buy such equipment) or have an amplifier which has a mono switch. On the other hand, I have Lympany's mono LXT recordings of Rachmaninov's Preludes and they still sound very good using the mono switch on my circa1989 Yamaha amplifier, and preferable to the fake stereo Eclipse re-issue.
I scrub the record with liquid clothes washing soap and distilled water using a goat hair brush. I scrub quite hard, working along the grooves. I then rinse off with distilled water plus some surfactant and vacuum dry. It works well with most records. The important thing with using all these soap/foam methods is to rinse well afterwards, otherwise residue can build up on the stylus and cause worse noise and even distortion.
I believe it has improved. Another suggestion try a different stylus. If it's spent it's life with a point contact cone or elliptical try a line contact. In theory it will ride on the good part of the groove over the damaged. With fluids just keep away from " hot " fluids like methylated spirit as removes everything even the plasticisers resulting in a brittle vinyl.
I am not going to change styli back and forth every time I get a faulty record but thanks
The sound quality of the Original Source releases have really impressed me. I have been able to compare a couple OS releases to minty originals, on my system the OS are a large improvement over originals. They are pricy but holy crap do they sound amazing! Worth the price for pieces I really want to hear in the best audio quality available. It would be incredible if some classic Decca releases were given a similar treatment.
Maybe Decca mastering and cutting techniques plus sound engineering was already as good as if not better than what the OS series are now doing. Do you think these OS DG records put them on a par with SXL2000/6000 records?
Thanks, you can put in a counter-offer
Fun videos. Not a big deal, but an FYI. Karajan is pronounced Cara yan.
Thanks!
I like your videos and taste in music and went onto your shop website. Nowhere could I find what your returns policy is - only how to initiate a return. Do you accept returns if the buyer does not agree with your grading? Incidentally, Karajan is pronounced Kariyan.
Yes I do take returns. Anything you are not satisfied with can be returned for a full refund. Thanks I know the correct pronunciation for Karajan even if I don't use it all the time. Let me know if you find any other mis pronunciations. Wait for me to say Johann Strauss wrong too and let me know the correct form when I do.
@@LPCLASSICAL That's a very fair policy. HAHA Johann Strauss is easy. Some of the Gaelic ones, such as Ruaidri Dáll Ó Catháin, are impossible.
Lucille and Ruby, Don’t Take your Love to Town are 2 great Country songs that Kenny Rogers recorded versions of, hopefully at least 1 of them is on that LP, Merry Christmas from Thailand!
CD sized booklet with an LP ? That's fun. I see on discogs that the original from the 1956 and the following reissues (sixties and seventies) were on 3 LP, while this edition from 1987 is only on 2 LP, mirroring the CD version here too.
with DMM they can get more music on a side
What makes me laugh are the ridiculous prices that some sellers charge, and that people will pay, for performances that are not even good. Only being interested in the label is incomprehensible to me. Sometimes, particularly in 1950's solo recordings, like Lympany and Heifetz, the original Mono can sound very good and the artificially processed Stereo remake can sound awful. Yet many collectors will simply pay more for the stereo because they assume it will be better. I often wonder if some collectors ever listen to their records, or if they do if their ears are actually functioning or even know what Classical music should sound like.
The performances are generally good though. The premium labels had the world's best artists.
Merry Yuletide and Santa-nalia!
If you like The Seekers/New Seekers, Try "Peter, Paul and Mary".
I went to my local Salvation Army on Saturday and the new manager has got rid of all the LPS, she doesent like them or want to sell then, - so binned the lot. Bah humbug!
Same here - the Salvation Army store got rid of all LPs a few months ago. All we have left now are BHF and Barnardos. Fortunately Barnardos is a large collection centre and this is where most of my charity shop records come from.
Merry Christmas!
Mixed sets are a no, it would just niggle me,
I would be returning that definitely, otherwise it encourages sellers to be sloppy
I'm seeing a few comments here and I can understand where they're coming from, but I don't think the noise is overpowering. It may have been visually graded and looks EX. He may have play graded it with a different system and quite possibly didn't pick that up. Either way, it's not overpowering. If it's just that little part and quietens going forward, I wouldn't say there has been a great lessening of sound quality. If it looks EX and you're happy with the majority of it, then I don't feel it's been graded incorrectly. You say side A is in nice shape? I'd stick with it. Give it a good another good clean and see if it improves. I think you can live with it.
Its not that bad - but as a seller I have very high standards for my buyers. I will keep it for myself.
So is the location just your packing area or is that your main deck ?
It is my main deck.
Reel2Reel? What next SHELLAC?! I don't think so, and the cassette comeback is a con too.
@@JudgeDrokk agreed. I know reel to reel is good but the cost and inconvenience ruins the format as a credible audio source.
@@LPCLASSICAL Cartridges though - they look fun, I'm too young to have enjoyed tose in their day.
