Willys Truck Revival Part 1 (226 Troubleshooting)

NOTE: I am an amateur self taught mechanic. This is not a how to video. I share videos of my Willys because there are so few out there. This is my 1962 Willys Pickup that I have owned for 14 years. I spent the first 8 years restoring it to its current condition. Two years ago I let it sit for too long over the Winter and have been trying to get it to run right ever since. I rebuilt the carb las...

Deer Hunting with a Willys Jeep Truck in the 1950's
Please keep that old truck and give it a good final home. you have living history in your hands
my 1960 willys pick up was going well , now wont start changed solenoid and cleaned voltage regulator battery 12.4 volts changed fuel filter cleaned carby and plugs just grinding noise from starter , very frustrating ,,,,, any thoughts ,,,, power to all locations fuses okay ,,,alan from aussie,,,,, australian willys assembled here 1959 right hand drive see where toyota came from the super motor was replaced last year
Just saw your message. Have you made progress? Have you inspected the flywheel and starter gear? The grinding noise makes me think you are missing some teeth. What motor?
where can i but those gauges on the dash

Great to see you getting the young lad involved. The best way to learn is to do, right! Great-looking vehicle. I would love one. Thanks.
Nice piece of junk dude that thing it cost more than any new vehicle
Nice piece of yonk 😂
What a Beauty
That’s my favorite Jeep ever. Nice Willys
I think it might be because your choke is on that’s usually the cause and idling is no good you got too run the engine underload for at least a 1/2 hr on the actual road too clean and burn up your carbon also throw in some fuel cleaner in the tank that will help break up the buildup in the carb
"Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads"...Dr Emmett Brown, Back to the Future. But these guys said it first. .
...looks like the front half of a half track...with the tracks removed and frame shortened and wheels where the track drive sprockets were...
Reminds me of dad in his ole International, if there wasn't a road then just make one. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Notice no big off road tires,,just wintertreads
😂😂...I liked his comment on the wiring kit. I've got a '58 Willys Wagon and it needs a complete rewire and I've been putting it off for about a year just because I've never done anything like that. I guess that's a hint to get'r done !!! I've even got a Painless wiring kit.
I used a wiring kit from Walck's, I believe. Surprisingly one of the easier parts of the rebuild. Took me a day and a half. The right kit helps.
@@brokejeepnut1905 ... A day and a half ?? You're motivated !!! I need a little of whatever you're taking. I fall asleep thinking of driving my wagon and then I wake up knowing that it's not finished.
@@huf67 I was a little younger then. Now I have the same problem as you. haha
You don't need to remove the intake manifold to do tthe valve clearance , just the fuel pump
Check float in carb, or excelarator pomp
that reminds me of an ex-girlfriend. it got to the point where no matter how much I knocked at the door she wouldn't let me in!
Love the truck and color
I'm one of those secret subscribers
I had a Jeep truck in 1964 and could not get it to run over 1500 rpm. after much replacement of fuel pump, carb, points plugs, etc etc. I took off the air cleaner and it run like a wild goat. The pan on the air cleaner, held on by a wing nut had a piece of 1/4" felt that had lost the adhesive that held it to the pan and it would collapse over the intake and choke the engine. I had a Jeep station wagon while working for a mining company in 55. Those were really good vehicles. Certainly worth restoring.
What rear corner guards are on this fabulous CJ3B ??!!
I am sure they were installed a very long time ago. They used to be very popular, often covering up rust or dents.
Great resto! I like the fact that mods were made, but nothing too crazy. It was done methodically and the end product is something to be proud of. What part of the PNW are you in? Many years ago, I used to call Oregon City home.
SW Washington. North of Vancouver.
That's a really great specimen
this engenie work 4 or 6 cilinder?Thanks
I love the Willys. Here on my farm in South Africa lies a hood for a 1948 Willys overland wagon.
I could be that u having slightly issue with a valve , drop some mystery oil or gear oil to see if the compression builds up.
very cool truck. I'm hoping to get one myself and work on it with my two boys.
If it's anything between 1967 and 1972 you have a wonderful truck! Hope you enjoy refurbishing it and keeping it in the family for Many More Years!
Nice Truck! It appears to be a 1970 grill in it
Interesting. I definitely wouldn’t know the difference. I haven’t had much experience with Fords other than a similar truck we had on the family farm over 30 years ago
@@brokejeepnut1905 the grill for 1967 to 1969 is one piece, after that there are two inserts! Look at the door tag drivers side it will show year model
@@ablemarine9072 Door tag does show 1968. So someone must have swapped the grill out.
@@brokejeepnut1905 that isn't critical, if you want a correct one you can trade. Doesn't hurt the value of the truck nor what it is! Enjoy and Thanks for the response I have 3 still. Back when they were made I had a fleet if 67-72 Ford pickups kept a camper Special, a two wheel drive 69 Crew cab with short box f250 and a four door short box 4 wheel drive! They remind me if an Era in America that was very enjoyable. My camper special is a daily driver and Still Pretty. The 4wd is almost perfect and less used and the two wheel drive us being restored this year if I have time to play with it. You have a lot to work with it appears. Enjoy the Ride!
If you have an interest in ever selling it Please Keep me in mind. Thank you for your responses
I owned one for years! Great truck! Brownie
My buddy has a '63 with a chevy eng/trans in it and a $6k two tone paint job. Runs great. Looks great. I just bought a '51 with an old Buick engine, warner OD. Hope it runs as well as yours when I get it running at all. Hasn't been run in decades.
I will buy it, how much.
Anderson is a great helper! Awesome looking Jeep as well. Something about those old Willy's that just can not be duplicated
Great Revival of they 60s Willys Say hello, thanks sharing.
The "Hurricane" 134-cubic-inch in-line 4 cylinder engine is still in production today and it is often the entry-level power plant for the Chrysler-owned Jeep Wrangler line. The engine is still in use for the Grumman postal van. The Continental 226-cubic-inch L-head straight-6 as on this Willys was replaced by the Buick V6 after 1961.
Beautiful looking Jeep 😍
Hey that person in the sled looks familiar
Great version of Bad Company.
REMINDS ME OF MY 20 GLADIATER
This is the greatest film on you tube, it really shows how important these rigs were to the men that owned them before quads and side by sides. If you owed a 4x4 you always got invited on the hunting trip;)
Thank you for such a great comment. I appreciate it
I know of a wagon version for sale locally at a classic car dealership. It has a chassi from a 90s blazer. Think the price is around 14-15 thousand.
Sad to see a Willys bastardized.4
No, you pronounce it correctly. That is, how it's pronounced in Toledo, OH - the hometown of Willys.
Thanks! If you watch old promotional videos on TH-cam it's pronounced like Willis. I will still say it as Willy's though, with no apologies. haha
mixture is too rich!
In part 2 I dropped the gas tank. There was a lot of moisture in it. That and ethanol fuel that had sat too long seems to be the main issue. I will continue to work on dialing it in as it could still be a little rich. Thanks for the suggestion. Always appreciate input.
Looking at the spark plugs the engine is running way too rich on the mixture, and there is a misfire which may be the low comp cylinder, which could be just the rings stuck. See if you can adjust the carburettor for weaker mixture, and take it for a run to get the enginr really warmed up and the rings may free off and stop the smoking. What a really bootiful old truck!! I love it! Your video was fine! Phil, UK
Fantastic truck... enjoyed your series on this old girl.......
Thanks. Hopefully more to come. There will be CJ-3B and CJ-2A videos added in the coming weeks
grumpy old fart from n.h. here, you might want to try putting cod liver ol on the cylinder instead of marvelm.o. some old timers i knew on cape cod said it would work for them sometimes. nice to see another old willy's back up and running.
Cod liver oil! That’s awesome, I love it!
grandad had a 53 sold it 20yrs ago for 50$ made me sick
ugh! That might make me cry. He sold it?
Sure is a pretty truck. Spent many years with all sorts of different Willy's jeep products. Did you do a vacuum test? That's important. That will tell you if you've got an issue with the valves. Your compression tester should be perfectly fine, it's doing what you need it to do.
Hmm Do you mean a leak down test? Or actually checking vacuum from a vacuum line?
@@brokejeepnut1905 I'd use it to diagnose engine problems. If possible, it's best to screw a barb into the intake manifold, but you can use a vacuum line. This can tell you if you've got sticky valves, which would drop compression, or a number of other different issues or problems. A vacuum gauge is a great tool. You can always use it to set the carburetor correctly as well. Here's a link to Holley: th-cam.com/video/NrnzD7PgoHI/w-d-xo.html
I was taught to use a short length of hose and blow out around the plugs to make sure there wasn't any dirt of debris to fall down inside the engine when pulling the spark plugs. I've never seen anyone in a video doing that, but that's how I was taught, especially with flat heads.
I do it with an air hose, just didn't show it in the video. Those holes collect everything! Just like a belly button.... haha
