I owned an Alberg 37 Yawl for 7 years, traveling from Chesapeake to Florida to PR . One thing never said , the tanks can removed and replaced without cutting up the cabin sole . All interior panels are removable giving access to chain plates and wiring and plumbing . This saves big bucks in maintenance . And never worry about the keel falling off . With 6 foot draft , you must keep one eye on the depth sounder when in shoal water and she is already heavy so try not load her up any more than you must . I failed on that point . I think Alberg 37 is is one of the very best boats ever built and I recommend her .

To further add.. I was caught out in quite a blow in one of these and was very impressed with their heavy weather abilities.. They will also stear themselves going to windward in a blow enabling you to go below and put the kettle on and make some food etc.. The Hurley is a very cleverly designed little Yacht!

Great Sailboat

My motor of choice is a Sichuan Sifa MB168F Chinese 3 HP air cooled diesel. The 20 MM keyed shaft gets adapted up to 1 inch and a 7 inch pulley is good for efficient alternator electric. A second small pulley can turn a vee belt to a hydraulic pump into a driven pump for your propeller shaft. Do not try to mount the engine on welded steel or the lugs will keep eroding. A thick plate aluminum wood plate aluminum sandwich is a good motor alternator base. Starting fluid is very dangerous, but a kettle of hot water slowly poured on the injector will have the motor starting in a snap. I never bled the line. I locked the compression release and pulled dozens of times until the muffler smells of diesel. The water cooled exhaust is gone as are sea cocks and impellers, and a small source of dry hot air comes off the motor. Aim for 1 HP for charge and 1 HP for propulsion, except you cut back the charge underway. The limiter screw can shave a grand off the 3000 RPM, and the motor needs 30 leisure hours somewhat slow to break in. Oil consumption will be quite high for a 196 CC 44 pound motor. Adapt a 1 inch stainless pipe for a tailpipe and it won't need or want water. I also like a dripless shaft seal so the dry air doesn't mix with hot seawater. The larger upright diesels don't necessarily have the same quality.

Sailed one of these, it's an interesting design for sure. It has a lot of weird configurations down below with regards to construction. Sailed ok. Just not crazy about maintenance aspects.

Thanks for the nice, informative video! I've had mine close to 2 years now. It's a fixer upper with a lot of hand rails including all around the edge from the bow to the cabin... working on it when I have time. It came a long way, but there's still much more to do. I've owned quite a few different sailboats from 14 to 27ft. and can't wait to get this one in the water.

The valve seat should be ground with a specifically dressed rotary stone, centered on a mandrel, with about 1 degree difference from the valve face; the reason for the difference in angles is so carbon can be broken away while the valve is opening and closing, otherwise carbon can build up and eventually the valve doesn't seal any longer and the compression/combustion pressure escapes. What the video author is doing, is called lapping, this is the step AFTER grinding. Lapping creates a narrow ~1mm rim between the outside rim of the valve seat and the valve face, where the seal is actually achieved. If the entire face of the valve and seat are lapped together, carbon will fail to be broken off, and eventually the engine may not even start.

I just got a 1973 McGregor venture 23 of Newport, the hull is in great shape foe its age, but it has no keel, i think im going to build my own keel as finding one is likely impossible, great video, thanks for sharing

Ahhh yes. Mu first boat was a venture of newport 23. Got me hooked on sailing. Im now cruising full time on a cruising sailboat. Man o man i miss that old 23. Mine was a 1974 named Happy Bottom.

I've got a 1969 Cal-34 with the original 30HP Atomic 4 engine, and use it every week during the season. Started right up last week! Anyway, thanks for the video on the oil change, I am going to try it myself for the first time this week.

Good review of the Venture of Newport 23. I have a '77 VN23 (Sail #1214) and have had many years of wonderful sailing her. I look forward to seeing any modifications you do and I would also be interested in hearing a review about its performance in stronger winds. With my mast raising system and a few mods it is relatively easy to set up, launch and solo sail.

You're no fool to be wary of gasoline. Though never injured I have had a few illustrations of just how volatile gas and its fumes can be. Im convinced that many, many people have gotten lucky given how careless they are with gas. Ask any auto shop owner. He will likely have a story and scars to match. The worst diesel is likely to ever do is smell bad. Lasts a lot longer too.

New to your channel. This was a good review of the VN 23, enjoyed it. I have owned and sailed one of these for 31 years now; it is a proven design for its intended purpose. There used to be a Yahoo group dedicated to it, great source of info but it is no longer in operation. You asked for some comments so here are a few of mine. I did not understand why you did not go through the process you used to raise and lower the mast. This is one of the more difficult things about this boat. The mast is tall and heavy for a trailer sailor. It can be raised by hand by the young and strong, and those willing to take the risk of it getting away from them. It not, it needs a mechanical assistance system of some kind. There are many options out there. It would have been nice to see your solution. Also, the boat not only sails well in light air, but when handled properly it is a surprisingly good boat in winds up to 25 mph. You are correct it is not an offshore boat. However, it handles moderate waves well also, in the 2-3ft range with white caps blowing when reefed early and sailed conservatively. However, it can capsize and sink if knocked down by a gust because the Captain either cleated or did not release the main. The self-righting you mentioned is only operational if you keep water from flooding the cabin through the companionway hatch in a knockdown. A safety factor you did not mention was the positive flotation that came with the original boat. In yours it looks like the flotation was removed, either for your video or permanently. If you are sailing in strong winds, it is a risk that in a knockdown water will come into the companionway hatch before the boat is able to right itself. Due to the beam of the boat, the companionway hatch is close to the water in a knockdown. Wave action can easily put water directly into the cabin if the hatch is left open, which is the normal setup for most trailer sailors. There are a few news stories out there describing the owners experiences. This is a risk not to be ignored. In strong winds with this boat, reef early, close and secure the companionway hatch, and do not cleat the main. Lots of fun, when sailed in this configuration. Overall a good job, but the absence of the mast raising leaves a bit of a hole. Also, it would be rare for anyone to get this boat fully rigged and launched from its trailering configuration in 45 minutes unless they have multiple hands all working together using a practiced and proven routine, like an Indy race car crew. An hour and 15 minutes for two, or an hour and a half for one practiced captain is about right. Good job, subscribed, looking forward to more. Loved how you went through the sailboat data numbers, spot on.

Gosh, I pity all that work on this diesel, but we are in very similar situation now with our Albin 82ms and MD-17C, which started to have massive blow-by's - the smoke comes from the rocker pushrods channels (valve covers removed) after 20-30 seconds of work. It doesn't want to idle anymore, it just starts if some throttle is added, and also - dies after a minute. And that happened after having him slightly overheated. I found massive inlet valve leak on 1st cylinder, which can explain poor compression but doesn't explain gases in oil pan. I'm thinkink piston rings blocked as well, but after watching your videos about this heroic onboard overhaul and than one year later - dead... Do you lnow what went wrong with your repair? Should I even try to do it?

Very nice review, thanks. I've got a 1978 vintage. Note that originally the aft end under the cockpit was originally filled with blocks of white styrofoam held in place by plywood panels; viewers can see some stray styrofoam pebbles on the sole back there. Some owners removed it, some did not. The lifelines here are, I believe, after-market. It was also common for handhold rails to be installed on the cabin rooftop. Great to watch your video. I own a 78 and have loved this boat for 20 years. You stressed the use of the keel bolt which I have never used and frequently sail mine at various positions depending upon conditions. You will find it sails well even in the full up position in light air reaching of course full down in heavy air to windward. I was knocked down once but the keel didn’t swing up. I believe only a full capsize would cause the situation you described. The boat will not point on the head sail but does well with a reefed main in heavy air. Your boat looks great. I’m in Michigan and sail on lake St. Clair, spring cleaning and launch soon. Enjoy!

Excellent review! I have a 1981 Bahama 28. Got lucky it came with a yanmar diesel! But wish it came with a bit more storage. They don’t build them like they used to!

Hey Markus, Thanks for the tour. I am actually in the same harbor as Leif below and we are friends. I bought my E35-2 in 2007. It is often said, the happiest two days of a sailors life is the day they buy it and the day they sell it. I do not happen to feel the anxiousness to sell her. My boat was build in 1972 and in similar shape to what you have... leaking fuel tank etc. I have done a lot to it to bring it back into shape... still a lot of finish work to do. I personally think the only engine for that boat, considering the engine is under the settee is the Atomic 4. It's not just easy to work on, it also helps with displacement and balance. It's also smoother and quieter than a diesel. I put an electric fuel pump with along with an electric shut off solenoid as well as the standard ball valve. I do think the next engine step may be electric, so I am also keeping my ears and eyes open. As for the track on the fore deck, it's for a cutter rig. E35-2's were often configured that way for racing.

As the market moves entirely to Catamarans, make sure that you don't get stuck with this type of old style mono boat. It will be nearly impoossible to sell this to anyone later and these are being abaondoned all over the world for failure to pay the monthly storage costs. Basically, no one wants to pay 600 per month to park these relics and walk away. Do not pay anything for them unless you are using it that summer and willing to dump them later. There are tens of thousands of tiny sailboats from the 60s, 70s etc that no one really wants so know the market if you even think of getting one - every old boat is for sale, with owners hoping and praying someone will be silly enough to buy it one last time before it is trashed - don't believe the "expensive upgrade" nonsense - they are still essentially worthless regardless if what the last guy wasted his money "upgrading" it. Market price is essentially zero - you can't insure these old things so you can't go to marinas as they require proof of insurance. Think free or $400.00 or something like that for some summer fun. Even then, you will use it twice over the summer and hate it the second time. Maybe you can get a few picures for instagram. Not sure what else you can do with them.
