Such a great interview guys, thank you. The Quintet is definitely worth the dollars but up to a certain point, just like every other high end wine. Grange and Hill of Grace are not worth the money anymore. It's just pretentiousness. Just head to Dan Murphys or any decent online shop and you are guaranteed to find some exceptional wines for barely a 100$s. Even better, hit the road and visit local wineries and you will be surprised at he quality/value of wines you can find. I can understand why some older vintages can got up in price due to cellaring costs and scarcity but a lot of merchants/wineries seem to be taking the piss with their pricing these days. Just because something is rare doesn't mean it's good or worth the money. Ohh and don't get me started on the price of Yarra Pinot these days lol

Best value wine in Australia, if you are lucky enough to be on the mailing list. If Penfolds had this fruit it would be $800 a bottle

Mount Mary is my favourite producer, I've been buying their wines for almost 40 years. The Quintet is my favourite but for me, the Pinot is just a hair behind; the aroma of a 15 year old bottle is beguiling. My only complaint is their refusal to put their reds under screwcap. I like to drink aged wines, ( I still have a bottle of 1988 Cabernets as the Quintet was called at the time.) and I have had a number of bottles where the cork has failed, particularly from the '90s. I was hoping you might have challenged Sam on this, particularly since their Marli Russell RP2 is screwcapped.

I love Krug, and I love champagne, but I admit that, with all I know about wine and food, I only discovered this “no flutes” rule recently. But it makes sense. I was never served champagne in a flute, I never had flutes in my cabinet, and whenever you think about wine, you think nose first, lips second. The glass allows the wine to infuse with oxygen and open with its flavor. The shape of the flute constricts the wine, it limits its appetite for oxygen. And same goes for anything! I mean, would you eat white truffles out of a test tube? Anyways, I loved this video, right now I’m looking at the 2008 vintage, 27th edition Rose, and 171 Grande Cuvée Krugs among some other wonderful bottles to choose from (Jacques Selosse Initial Blanc de Blanc, 1990 Dom Perignon, 2015 Cristal, and 1975/1985 Bollinger) for a special dinner coming up, a seafood Michelin Star in Hollywood! I’m going between the 2008 and 171 Grande Cuvée Krug as my top choices.

Threw some 2020 Bin 28 in a decanter for 6hrs then back in bottle. Just started to open up but was really nice the next day. I'm keen to try the sip and see method. I might need a magnum, so there is some left for everyone. 😊

I really don’t understand the comparison of Grenache to Pinot. I just find Grenache to have too many fruity strawberry notes but without any tannin. I think it’s very close to Gamay rather than Pinot because of the lack of tannin and strawberry notes. I’d be looking at Mencia or entry level Lange Nebbiolos to compete with Pinot. There’s plenty of producers making bulk affordable quantities of these grapes and has more of the savoury tannins similar to Pinot

I normally don’t decant unless drinking with a large group or dining out with only 2-3 hrs available. I found best to just pour a glass and let it evolve in time. The only time I will double decant is to get rid of those sediments before serving at a group tasting or dinner.

I've got the 171 grand cuvee, 2008 vintage, and 2011 vintage currently. Had the 2006 last month at Alma in Portugal

Just on the point system. Erin Larkin just gave the lamella 100 points. The reviews have come out on wine front and the lamella was 94 and the lowest and least favourite of the Standish release for that critic. You buy what you want and you like! And trust the wine makers you like year after year. Reviews just assist and help you understand what you should be tasting instead of just saying this slaps!
