Thru Hiker Practice Dice Game: Far Out App!
Prepping for my Appalachian Trail is even more fun with my custom made dice game! Each day I’ll roll the large dice to determine which backpacking skill I’ll be practicing that day!
Will I be setting up my tent? Hanging my bear bag? Cooking a meal? Resupplying in town? Or maybe digging a cat hole in the woods! 🤣🤣🤣 Today… I’ll roll to practice my Far Out App skills!
Additional dice will pinpoint particular skills, mileage points and time of day-it just keeps getting better as I become more experienced using my backpacking gear!

    I'll say for my part that one of the best times I had during this trip was seeing the night sky. The Grand Canyon is a "certified dark sky" location, and the number of stars, satellites and other celestial bodies that you can see is amazing! There was no moon that night, so it was super dark! Go at the right time and you'll see the milky way more clearly than you ever thought possible. We were lucky enough that during our visit they were having a "night sky" event, and one of the rangers gave an excellent talk about the various constellations, planets, and history surrounding us. It was great. I only wish I had prepared a bit better and brought along some binoculars (even cheap binocs will greatly enhance what you can make out in a night sky). Next time, when Mothmom and I do the entire canyon down to the bottom and back, I won't forget!

    I recommend the blue connector offered on Amazon to ease the transfer of the fresh water. The trick is to loosely tighten the fresh water bottle so air escapes. I carry three bottles as well, but there have been a few times when having a full 2 liter to carry back to camp for filtering is just easier. ( th-cam.com/video/zOLZM3QzVOA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=H6FmXzvUwy3AyMfX&t=88 ) video of the Sawyer connected

      Thank you for the tip! I ordered the connector (much better than hoping nature provides bottle stabilizing rocks 🤣). Have there been times when you had no choice but to carry a 2 liter bag of water to camp as opposed to bringing your empty bottles to shore?

    • @unclegregghikes
      @unclegregghikes หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MothMom1212 Actually, yes. There have been several times when having water in camp meant going downhill for and back up a total of 3/4 mile...or carrying uphill from water to camp for the night. After filling all bottles, I still carried the 2 liter up so I could filter it and have enough for an extra coffee in the morning and enough water to start the day without backtracking for water.

      Ha ha! I thought the exact same thing when I started putting together these test options. I’ve never seen other thru hikers get specific about their systems (outside of the CuluClean and their drinking Smart Water bottle-ew…), but I did spot the Vapur bottle in the background of someone’s video and figured out their system (and then came up with a far less expensive and lighter version of it with that green collapsible bottle). But I agree-why so much water?! Ha ha! That’s why I searched and found two of the absolute smallest bottles possible, which I won’t even be filling more than halfway! I haven’t seen any other hiker videos with pocket-sized, lightweight, totally functional and durable options before, so hopefully this helps other hikers out there who are trying to figure out their best options. 😉

    • @MothMom1212
      @MothMom1212 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Helloooo! Yep! As I mention in the video, it’s only a flat simulation with no rocks and roots and boulders (or weather), but… that’s why I also hike over 500 miles on actual trails every year too! In case unaware, the Connecticut state flower is ROCKS! 🤣🤣🤣 Between that and fallen trees, we get a lot (some might say: too much) of that type of that step-up-down-and-over training! We just don’t have much in elevation changes here in CT, so I had to devise a method of strengthening those muscles in prep for my thru hike next year.

      Hello! Yes, I’m thru hiking the AT in 2024. I hike about 500 miles a year on actual trails but CT doesn’t have a lot of elevation training opportunities near me. I operate an animal sanctuary, so can’t drive too far away bc I need to be back here for the ducks! It’s kind of fun doing the math in the book in waiting rooms bc it starts some fun conversations with people. Good luck with your training and hike!!!

    Wonderful! The first video I have seen about toe splay and socks, (except your shoe video which was very informative). I have to try the Loose fit Stays up socks as I can't find comfortable socks that don't bite into my lower calves. Thanks for sharing!

      I have 2 pairs of Merino wool loose fit socks. They’ve gone over 1500 miles on trail and treadmill and they’re still fluffy and thick under foot-not like darn tough that wear down to thin elastic within weeks. Glad you found this helpful!

    That is a wealth of information! Thank you for sharing! I wish the best for you on your 2025 thru hike of the AT. I am planning on a LASH hike in 2025 myself from NJ/NY border to Bennington Vermont.

      Thank you! I had to go down a few different rabbit holes before finally discovering REAL information! And then I thought, “Why isn’t anyone teaching us about this?”

      @@MothMom1212 You are right, and I appreciate you sharing your information. I will watch some of your other videos as I am sure they are packed with information too. Hope to do a LASH hike in 2025. Was going to do it this summer but I have to have open heart surgery that was unexpected.

    What a great training concept. I will be copying your excellent exercise program now. And yes also will follow your trek up the AT. Have a great time.

      Thank you! I can’t believe the difference in my leg strength already! Toughest part for me is taking that one day off a week for muscle recovery! I just want to keep on going! I’ll be in virtual VA in a few days-woohoo!

    I just want to add that while we love the NordicTrack Mothmom describes when it's working, we've had it for 11 months and have only been able to use it for about 4 out of those 11 months. NordicTrack's quality control is utter garbage, and the treadmill has been broken more than its been working. It takes them MONTHS to make repairs. First the electronics simply died, and then a a bearing failed in one of the treadmill rollers. Before you buy your own, do your research, and believe the bad reviews.
