Wild Edibles Video #1: How to Collect Mulberries With an Umbrella
This is the best observation on autumn olives and love that white creamy film on top. How did you find out about that? Curiosity? That sauce tastes amazing. What I did was make my cooked sauce and it sat in fridge and all that clear white liquid was a layer on top. Great information on this and appreciate it. I let it sit for a few months . I ordered what you said and I’m going to steam juice this and then simmer to make a incredible autumn olive syrup.
Glad you liked it. I can't wait for this season to clect more
Best video of all videos like this! So helpful, thank you!!
💞Love it
Hey Shane. Good to see your garden again. Respect from Africa 🇿🇦
Sorry had an issue uploading so had to re-upload this video. Lost a comment, but don't know who.
Thank you . I have 2 beds side by side running E to W. What should i do if I'm putting a hoop for my cucumbers?
I've se En people put the trellis hoop on the end of one bed attaching to the other bed, so the trellis hoop creates a curves arc in the walkway between beds. Experiment. Either that or just make a straight trellis on north side of the bed. I love breaking "rules" just to see what happens.
The winter is done again
… in extremely hot weather, it is good to create some shade relief … therefore, I think putting the trellis on the west side is best … as is planting in an understory pattern for shade … BTW … most videos discussing bed orientation NEVER make the clarification of whether the orientation is the short side or the long side, which does nothing for the viewer in gaining information on bed orientation … thanks for making it clear …
Prayers from western NY Shane. Hope to see you back soon.
The winter is done.
I’m so glad I found you! This was the best description and advice pertaining to sun orientation. The simple pictures help make it clear and you stating the reasoning behind all the options was what I needed to help me understand the big picture. Thank you!!!
You're welcome, Deborah. I made the video because nobody I saw talking about this issue did a good enough job answering my questions. It's as if some book so.ewhere said to do it one way and people just kept repeating it without questioning the logic.
Does it matter which direction your beds run on a slope if they are raised beds? Reason I ask, I would like to orient my beds east to west but that would place them parallel on the slope. However, they are raised beds, so shouldn’t be a problem, right? Thanks for the video.
In my opinion, I think putting your beds with the long sides perpendicular to the water flow is best. So the long side of the bed would slow the water flowing down the slope. It's like a swale in permaculture. Even though you are growing above the ground in a box,, the box itself acts like a barrier to water flow and erosion.. Just my humble two cents.. I talk about this at the 4 minute 30 Second mark.
Are you still hiding away from the cold.
Bit of a rough patch for me right now. I will try my best to post again as soon as I can. We are actually at 60 degrees today, which is unusual for this time of year. But then Sunday it will be back to the 30s.

Hey Shane. We love garlic. But here in our subtropical climate it stands no chance. So of to the store with me if I what garlic 😩 Respect from Africa 🇿🇦
That's interesting. I'm so used to garlic growing so easily with pests never messing with it that I would think it could grow anywhere.
@@shaneswing2016 no its been 2 years of trying and everyone keep telling me, nope that's not going to work. This is the third year that I'll be trying to replant the biggest ones from the last batch. Maybe it will start paying off.
@@shaneswing2016 so how much snow do you have?
@@jeshurunfarm about 2 inches on the ground for a few weeks now since it's so cold. Did.t get.a.chance to make my garden bed videos, so I'll have to do this right before spring planting begins.
@@shaneswing2016 you better, even if you show us just your snow covered world, remember, guys like me have only experienced snow twice in the 48yrs on this planet.
Gold from the ground! I had no ides you could plant garlic from something you buy at the store. my favorite part is after harvest I wont have to buy garlic!
I buy the organic just in case they spray some inhibitor spray on them like they do on potatoes to stop the eyes from sprouting. I'm growing some non organic this year though as a test to see germination rates. I'll of course do a follow up video in the spring.
Ps. Yeah I grew enough that I will have enough garlic to last me until summer when this batch is ready. So far 200 cloves are in the ground. If all goes well another 400 will be ready. I plan to sell so.e next year. And I plan to make 7 more raised beds if I can.
Fantastic Respect from Africa 🇿🇦
Thanks Justus.
i do love walnuts in salads
Try the roasted ones in salad. Mmm.
Nice never seen it up north here i don't think anyway
It's been some time dude. Respect from Africa 🇿🇦
I was wondering where you were. You have any black walnuts over there?
@@shaneswing2016 nope. We have lychee, citrus and banana trees here, we are in a subtropical area and it's hot here as we are in our spring time. Our challenge is to keep the veggies cool, cheap shade is my specialty and big strawberries 🍓
@@shaneswing2016 o yes. We have thousands of hectares Macadamia trees and other nuts.
Thanks for sharing your notes here! Cool idea with the sifting option!
Thanks for stopping by to comment. You saved me a ton of time. I used to process one nut at a time with a small piece of wood in my hand and rubbing the nuts against the edge of the wood.
Great video but I would suggest NOT processing them near any area where you plan to ever grow food, they contain chemicals that hinder growth in other plants.
Thanks Lisa. All is well. I have about 8 inches of woodchips right there. Leaching into my beds has never been a problem there or around the beds. But yeah, have to be careful with the juglone juice.
When I was 9 we lived next to a walnut grove. We used to climb the trees and use slingshots to shoot each other with the walnuts. Man they hurt. The last year we lived there they bulldozed them all down and built 100s of houses.
Nostalgic and tragic memories there Redhot. I at least hope they didn't landfill that walnut wood or burn it. That would be even more tragic.
Respect from Africa 🇿🇦
Back in the early 70s we were told about Euell Gibbons and his book "Stalking the Wild Asparagus". It was inspirational and helpful as we travelled the back roads of Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington for a year. I remember a particularly great weekend in Oregon foraging for Chanterelle and Oyster Mushroom with some friends. Some things are pretty obvious like Prickly Pear Cactus in Arizona but others like your Spice Plant are more obscure. I always thought that if the world went sideways we could survive off nature. Now I'm not so sure.
Hey Redhotfiat. Yeah, there's not enough foraging volume to sustain everyone if they all knew how to identify plants. Fortunately, not everyone does, but even still foraging doesn't supply enough calories in general. Walnuts and acorns are good calories, but still not enough.
Yes it does look like tomato sauce.... Respect from Africa 🇿🇦
Ps. Respect from Africa 🇿🇦
Thanks Justus
Wow. Like how your subscriptions are growing. How do you do that?
Just keep my head down and produce more videos (that and beg people, lol)
I just came accross these berries this year and had to look them up. I did not see anything saying they were edible, but it may have been the wrong plant. I saw it called the russian olive. I can't wait to try them now. God bless!
Hey there. The Russian olive is a relative of the autumn olive, but edible Russian Olive berries are grayish-green. People can also confuse the berries of Autumn olive with edible bitter buffaloberries and inedible red honeysuckle berries, so be careful to fully identify anything you plan to eat. I highly recommend the books that I link to below by Samuel Thayer.
Last night I watched Content on Content with Josh and he suggested turning of the notifications on our devices before filming.... it has not happened to me yet?
Thanks. I'll do that from now on.
How cold does it get there by you? Until when can you grow.
We get a good amount of snow in winter and some below zero temperatures too. I'd say in about a month, I'll harvest most of the crops in my garden. But the last two seasons, I've had kale that made it through the winter.
O wow. Nice one. Respect from Africa 🇿🇦
Hey Shane! I like your idea of using the trash bags to help keep the cats out. Our cats are a problem in the garden too. I feel your pain. Gardens are looking great!
Thank you Kulick family. These trash bags keep out the cats and deer pretty well. I used only them before I started using row covers.
You got the flu? What's up with the red nose? Anyway, I live in the metrical world and these tips of things are just easier. Respect from Africa 🇿🇦

Yeah, it's so cheap that I got 28 bags so far.
Great video, soul price in Australia is very high all year round and often very bad quality. This is one issue I’m facing here
I have a compost pile, but it isn't enough. In the US, I guess we are fortunate to have surplus. At that price, I had to buy some.
@@shaneswing2016 I bought bagged compost and soil from multiple brands, I’ve found lots of dirty things, lots of glass, plastics, and I even found medicine bottle caps and in one bag female sanitary item (the most disgusting of all) When I move to my own property I’ll be making my own compost pile. God willing. Australian soil is bad and full of clay, the companies put clay soil and slap some organic matter in there and call it premium soil at $15 a bag ( small 20 litre bag)
@@Michaelsaba1 damn Michael, that sucks about the soil in your area. Yeah, make your own for the win.
@@shaneswing2016 thinking of moving to US. Things are getting very communist here.
