Having new baby fish is always exciting to see! Congrats bro! Great Video!
So so true nothing beats it 😁 I know my voice is a bit misleading but I prefer sis to bro. Thanks tho really appreciate it!😊
How exciting!! Congratulations on your new babies 😍
Thank you 🥰
Eggs must have been on the plants or something. Last year, I got an order of plants in for planting in my Juwel Rio and I had put them in a holding tub for a while till I could start setting up. I filled up the tubs so the plants could go to emersed growth and all. A week later, I also noticed some very little fry in there. Only one made it and grew up to be a rainbow fish. I brought it to my lfs since I don't have plans for keeping rainbow fish.
Definitely! Aww what a pleasant surprise :)
@@BlinkyShimp wasn't prepared for it. The next day, I quickly got to the store after work and got this Superfish kit to make BBS (you need to cut up a soda bottle for it) and started hatching that. It's so much fun raising fry!
Oooo I used a chopped up bottle for my diy hatchery it will be featured in a future vid 😁raising fry is becoming my favourite part of the hobby so satisfying and rewarding! ☺️
@@BlinkyShimp Last year I got a JBL hatchery for my birthday. The other bottle is still somewhere just in case. The Superfish kit comes with some handy tools like a fine mesh net and a pipette.
I love shrimp!!! I used to have fighter fish and they do well with shrimps…but I ended up loving the shrimps more😂 they are so cool to watch
Aren’t they just! My first fighter thought they were food😬 but luckily my Second one was more peaceful and got on well with shrimp 😁
What I can also recommend is raising the fry in an established tank with lots of biofilm and detritus to feed on. For example, I had a quarantine tank set up for like 5 months, initially for plant holding, then for quarantining new fish. At some point I bought 7 bandit corydoras and quarantined them in there before adding them to the big Juwel with my tetras and a couple of bristlenoses. The corys were still young when I got them, but they bred during quarantine and about 6 fry made it. I wasn't counting on it but at some point there were these tiny fry darting through the sand in the front of the tank between the blue dream shrimp. So I started feeding Hikari first bites and BBS to try to raise them up quickly. After a month or 2, I moved them to the Juwel and as it turned out, another fry had hatched and survived in there as well. There is a pile of botanical litter and muck in the right front corner near the internal filter (and not planning to mod my Juwel Rio for the time being) where tiny fry could survive for a while I guess. I know it's unsightly but it is useful. I see fish, usually corydoras foraging that muck heap. And cardinal tetras love to sift through detritus for food. But anyway, raising fry in an environment with plenty of biofilm and microscopic life can work a real treat. And it's probably also more natural. I also follow a couple of other breeders on TH-cam like KeepingFishSimple and he often uses the more clinical way of raising fry in fry trays and the sort, but he also explains the benefit of having natural food sources around like a biofilm rich environment, feeding green water, etc.
That’s really helpful thank you so much for sharing :) I found I had a much higher success rate with fry once the walls of my little tubs became covered in algae and biofilm, I added some moss and plant cutting which presumable had some little critters in for them to eat too . I love KFS’s videos! Iv have recently started to try produce some green water but I think I might take a while without a starter culture but I’ll keep my fingers crossed :)
@@BlinkyShimp I keep a few small tubs of green water on my window sill, the window of my flat facing North-West and has sun for the most part of the day. I get yoghurt tubs from my mum who buys farm made yoghurt near where my parents live. I also use them for growing carpeting plants.
Sounds like a good method did it take you long to get green water? And Did you use tank water or fresh declorinated water. Thanks :)
Just wanna say thanks for doing what you do and sharing your passion for aquatic animals, I'm slowly working towards fishkeeping with a specific interest in shrimp breeding, quite sadly on an extremely constrained to non-existent budget lol It's so helpful to have creators like yourself putting out content I can use to do "homework" in the meantime! 🖤
Your very welcome I’m really glad you find the videos useful 😁 I have to say my least favourite thing about this hobby is definitely how expensive it is, but you can do it! A few months ago I tore down one of my tanks and moved the fish and shrimp into a plastic storage container with no substrate just a few plant cuttings, rocks and a sponge filter-the shrimp seem to love it in their and have been breeding loads. There are a lot of ways to cut on the cost so I might make video on it in the future. Thanks 💜
the corys look so cool on the light substrate!
I really agree! I wonder how they would look on a darker sand with more contrast?
such beautiful tanks! i need corys some day they are so cuteee
Thank you :) Honestly go for it! I really cant recommend them enough. They’re so fun peaceful and easy to keep.
Aww sweet babies 🥹 Your tanks look so great and your plants grow so well! Any secret to keeping your plants looking so good? I’m new to keeping live plants, I’d love any advice you’d be willing to share!
So adorable 🥺Thank you so much 😁 Not really secret’s I don’t do anything too complicated when it comes to plants I just focus on 3 main things. first make sure you use a high nutrient substrate like the aquasoil I used , other nutrient rich substrates work great or you could use root tabs with an inert substrate. Make sure you have a good bright light and have it on between 6-8 hours a day if I leave them on any longer I tend to get algae very quickly. Next I find weekly water changes help plants I tend to do anywhere between 30% and 50% depending on what’s in the tank. Also fertilisers can be very effective too however they aren’t mandatory so try go without them initially for a week or two and see if the plants actually need them and only dose if your plants aren’t doing so well as iv found if I use them from the start it can give unwanted algae a boost. CO2 is like a cheat code for plants but it’s not something iv ever dabbled with … maybe in the future. Finally some plants do better in different water parameters and hardness like as much as I love Java fearns they never seem to do well in my tanks but other species like Vallisneria absolutely thrive. So I’d say try as many different variety’s of plants as you can and see which species work best in your water and stick with those. I really hope this helps 😁let me know how it goes🌱🪴
@@BlinkyShimp thank you so much for taking the time to write out such a detailed answer! I really appreciate your advice and will be sure to follow it. Cant wait to see more videos of the baby Corys - love all of your videos! 💕
Your very welcome! Thank you I’m glad you enjoy the videos it means a lot 💜
The Cory fry grew quick! Maybe I asked this before but How long does it take them to reach maturity?
They really did! They’re currently 2 months old and it can be anywhere between 6-12 months I think 😁
The reds'll win. They breed like crazy. I keep a mixture of colours in my large tank. Although, I recently found some wild types in another tank and they must've been in there from years ago. Just shows how hardy they are. I dunno why people say they aren't, they live in filters and everything.
They are hard as nails aren’t they I found loads in my canister filter the first time I cleaned it 😂 had them at really low temps too and they did just fine , your deffo right about the reds iv spotted a few shrimplets in there tank already but nothing in the blues yet 🦐

Go team Blue! You can see it there eyes (after pulling out a magnifying glass), they’re going to win.
You can see it too?!?! There fighting spirit burns bright in their tiny little eyes, some believe it is a gift bestowed to them by their shimpy god. Up the blues 💙
those are some adorable wriggly friends! I hope you keep having good luck with them. :) I've not bred Corys before, but over the last... almost twenty years?, I've raised lots *_and lots_* of live-bearers (mostly guppies/Endlers, but at least a few broods each of mollies and platys as well, lol), Blue tilapia (technically a cichlid) and two types of seahorses (Hippocampus erectus and H. zosterae). I want to try with kuhli loaches sooner or later, though I haven't found very much info on breeding them yet (so I think that'll be a kind of fun experiment??)
Thank you :) Iv been meaning to pick up some livebearers for a while now , guppies where my first fish but with me being new to the hobby I didn’t realise they where all males😂 And wow seahorses! That’s fascinating I’d love to give those a try if I ever dip my toes into saltwater. You should definitely have a go at khuli loaches! iv heard there extremely challenging but it would be so rewarding to get it right!

✅ 😂 she/her or they/them please
Id say cherry shrimp will win lol they’re more adapted to aquariums. My cherry shrimp are champion breeding machines. They’re not good at keeping algae down but that’s why I always add a nerite snail to keep it under better control. Though some is very good for the babies, it’s not great for the plants
Go team redcherry!❤️
It’ll probably be ok but I always cycle with snails because if there’s no waste or living creatures in there, the tank can’t cycle. Plus snails create a much healthier environment for shrimp ❤
Good shout thanks for that I’ll bare it in mind next time , I’ll probably get away with it being a fairly small bioload but A few tiny bladder and ramshorn snails did actually pop up in the tanks before adding shrimp so that should have helped :)

Yessss you deffo have to set up a tank! and make a video on it too id love to see what you come up with😁
@@BlinkyShimp how big of a tank would I need for koi? 🤔 lol Challenge accepted! I’ll set my mind to doing something with a nano tank this winter.
A lot bigger than any tank I have😂 a koi betta on the other hand would be much better suited for a nano😉 I’ll look forward to seeing it 😊
When did you turn the heater back on?
The day after the water change so the heater was off for just under a full day :)
These are the cutest little guys😊 congrats fish mom! I’m sure you’ll raise them right! Just subscribed! Im curious, how long does it take these fry to reach maturity?
They truly are! Thank you so much I’m flattered you think that :) and much quicker than your koi I bet they’ll be fully grown and ready to start there own fishy family’s in a years time.
You took me back 40 year on my first corys breeding and the joy it brings us, your next task is breeding your rams it will be very different but rewards even better , nice to see enjoyment in your hobby
That’s awesome glad I could take you back :) it makes me so happy hearing about others love and passion for our amazing hobby! My rams are long gone unfortunately the pair of electric blues I had did lay eggs a couple of times but they never made it to the hatching stage. I’d love to pick some new ones up and try again but the quality of rams in my local shops doesn’t seem to be the best. I’ll be keeping my eyes out for some or maybe some other similar cichlids.
@@BlinkyShimp rams, aspos and few other dwarfs work well with tetras and corys and your shrimps , and yes key to dwarfs is very good stock its takes time . i was lucky to have space for a fish room out side my 2 show tanks both were ox bow tanks with clay on backs of tanks ,took times to master my set up but my fish loved it seeing fish breeding living with others is great viewing but very hit and miss for young growing up. thats when i new i needed space for breeding room and many tanks, all gone now after 37 years 1978 i started how things have changed in that time ?
Wow that’s amazing I bet you learnt so much over the years! when I finally get some dwarf cichlids you’ll have to share some of that wisdom and give me a few tips ;)
Awesome 👍👍

Thank you very much and yes, it really is isn’t it what a joy
Alright just for the record I was here when you had ~100 subs, let’s see how this channel goes
Thank you so much for the support and coming along for the ride 😄
aren't those shrimp's could possibly eat the cory eggs?
It might be possible but I think it’s quite unlikely , iv never seen the shrimp anywhere near the eggs and iv had many eggs and fry since this video.
Neocaridinas like most shrimps are detritivores, they don't eat anything "alive", won't touche plants but eat dead or dacaying plants, won't attack fishes or other shrimps but will eat dead ones and I believe it's the same for eggs, fertiles eggs will be spare but unfertile/dead eggs will be eaten. I've seen it in my aquariums, they don't touch snails eggs but once snails have atched they will eat any matter left by eggs or unached eggs.
video's like this remind me of the love I have had for this hobby over some 35 years thanks for putting a smile on my face and great work with the fry :)
Awww thats so lovely, I think it might be my favourite comment! Thank you for making my day and passing that smile right back to me :D
That is awsome!!
Thanks :)
If you want to harvest a bigger amount of corys I would suggest putting the eggs in a separate cup of water with 10 drops of your average hydrogen peroxide to stop the fungus from developing and 2 water changes A day of 80% . Congrats on your corys !
Thanks for that! I’d heard of people using methylene blue but didn’t realise hydrogen peroxide could do the same ill give it ago :)
@@BlinkyShimp I’ve had way more success with it over methylene blue . Good luck !
Awesome That’s great to hear , I just pulled a bunch more eggs today so will be interesting to seehow much the hatch rate improves :)
