Clearing Your Path for Contemplative Prayer and Union.
มุมมอง 1.3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
In the previous video we looked at St Bernard of Clairvaux's 11th Homily on the Song of Songs. In this homily he describes a simple path to contemplative prayer and union. It is so simple that children can do it, and have done it. Yet we complicate it so much that we make it impossible for ourselves. In this video I continue the theme of the last video but look more specifically at the obstacle...
Path to Contemplation
มุมมอง 5332 หลายเดือนก่อน
So many people today are interested in contemplative prayer; contemplative union; being a contemplative. There are so many books on the topic which add to the confusion. The steps (there are two) are rather simple and direct. St Bernard of Clairvaux describes them in beautiful detail in the 11th Sermon on his Commentary on the Song of Songs.
Feeling Lost in this World?
มุมมอง 4622 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video is for Christians who feel lost in this world. Especially for those who try to pray and practice their faith but feel alienated from God. Their sense of alienation makes them feel that God has rejected them and they have sinned in a way that can never be reconciled. The video explores the theme of Exile in the Bible and argues that Exile does not prove that we are rejected by God rat...
A Monastic Perspective on the Serenity Prayer.
มุมมอง 4722 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Serenity Prayer is at the heart of all 12 Step Recovery Programs. It helps millions of people maintain their sobriety and many, many others to live happier lives. It is a strange mix of prayer and wisdom instruction. If you are ever feeling lost, then careful and thoughtful meditation on the Serenity Prayer will pull you back. In this video I meditate on each line of the Serenity Prayer in ...
Murmuring vs Thanksgiving
มุมมอง 4543 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video focuses on two basic mental states in the spiritual life. It holds the view that we are in either one state or the other and that there is no neutral state in between. It also holds the position that we are, by default, murmurers and it is only by choice and migrate to a state of thanksgiving i.e. we cannot 'fall' into a state of thanksgiving. Fenelon Strategy For a Life of Continuous Prayer.

Fenelon Believed that continuous prayer was possible. In Ch 4 of Book 2 he shows his own personal strategy for implementing this ideal. In this video I read through this chapter and make some comments, here and there, from a monastic perspective.

Establishing A Right Relationship To Suffering

6 Steps That Will Reactivate Your Spiritual Life.

In the previous video, tinyurl.com/4x8v6nza, we looked at how the monastic concept of 'separation from the world', i.e. the worldly spirit is essential for a fulfilling spiritual life and how not having this separation leads to spiritual and even physical illnesses. In this video we look at 6 simple steps to facilitate that separation in the most painless way possible. Abbey Website: www.trappi...
Flight from the World
มุมมอง 1K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Many Christians today are experiencing a lot of spiritual pain which further leads to psychological pain and to illnesses. The root cause of this pain is our inability to hear the voice of the Lord summoning us to separation from the spirit of worldliness. Monastic tradition and our mystical heritage calls it 'Fuga Mundi' or 'Flight from the World.' Abbey Website: www.trappistabbey.org Contact:...
Rethinking Failure
มุมมอง 3865 หลายเดือนก่อน
Success and Failure are modern concepts. Our ancestors did not think in these terms. Their focus was primarily on survival and living as an important part of a larger community. Are we any happier, or more fulfilled, than they were? This video takes a critical look at where the modern concepts of success and failure originated and suggests that they have a malevolent source. We all love success...
Peace of Mind

St Anthony, the first monk, in the Egyptian Desert pleaded to God, "Lord, I want to be saved but these thoughts do not leave me alone; what shall I do in my affliction? He got his answer. This video sketches the broad outline of how the later monastic tradition developed the answer to this question. Many Christians believe morality consists in replacing bad thoughts with good ones. Lent in the Monastery

This video describes how this transition came about and after watching this video perhaps you...

I think some of this blending of traditions and religious thought is because of people being so afraid to offend other people's culture.....that a Satanic "New Age" philosophy is being promoted...where everyone's beliefs are valid....and nobody's religion is wrong. The ultimate proof of Christianity being the true religion is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. No other religion provides an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit.

It's uncanny how these videos and your spiritual advice always seem to come right on time. I've felt pretty distant from God recently.... because I was trying to do everything on my own. I was thinking about trying to increase my devotionals ( like enrollment into the Brown Scapular and doing the devotional requirements that are required in order to obtain the promises of avoiding going to Hell..etc. but this kind of feels like trying to earn my way into Heaven based on my own merits again...which hasn't been working for me. I know great graces come with these sacramentals/ devotions so I'll probably still do them anyway....but all of my legalism is pushing me away from having a real relationship with God and it's wearing me out in the process. I also had many dreams of becoming a famous artist...movie director..etc...that now feel like a great burden as I'm forced to choose God's will...or my own worldly desires and dreams.... Anyway...Thank you for another excellent video!

Thank you Br. Brian for this! I had entertained contemplation. I thought about how far away I am and purchased "Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle or the Mansions." I was enjoying it but so many other obligations pulled me away from reading it. Also I remembered from my childhood admiring Bernadette of Soubirous and learning that she wasn't intellectually gifted and so since then I always thought, there might be hope for me. Anyway, fast forward six decades on track off track, on track, off track etc., until I really stood up and noticed that Jesus had been calling me out of sinfulness to Himself. The thought that he had humbled Himself by doing so many, many times bought me to my knees and the final decision that I had been an obstinate fool and I better listen before He with His Divine Authority could choose to write me off. He led me to another job position, another Church and finally the Traditional Latin Mass where I sat and thought I had died and gone to heaven. Basically, I am NOT the same person I was when I walked into that church a year ago. . . . I also learned that trying to devour (Catholic) knowledge at a fast pace wasn't helping and that He preferred I just sit there quietly most of the time and if I must read, it needed to be for understanding. S L O W L Y. I had been scheduling the Lord rather than letting him take over. It was/is an anxiety ridden performance on my part. I read in the Imitation of Christ, Chapter 7 "Thy beloved is of such a nature that He will admit of no other, but will have thy heart to Himself, and sit there like a king upon His throne." That meant to me, "it's time to peel away all attachments." Every last one. It will be worth the cost.

Thanks Brother BrianBr, this video has touched me deelply, i cried through most. Your words ring so true for me, the stupid pride and intelectualism and foriegn mysticism. I struggle most with letting go. Praying more and asking for relationship doesn't seem to come to anything. How do we know when it is Jesus love working in us and not just us trying to do it all. I sometimes think that there are just a few choosen souls, like yourself, in which our Lord Jesus genuinely takes the reins . I'm in my sixties now and ,desire Gods love always , but thers a sense of futility when i realise just how completely powerless i am to do much about it. Thanks again

Thank you for blessed comment. I wish you could see the great treasure it is to have a heart that suffers interior poverty and a sense of futility with every spiritual endeavor. This is God's work and it is the preparation (the only preparation in fact) for the future gift of Divine Union. All the great mystics and saints experience this but the difference between them and us is that they understand its value. Don't be afraid of your interior poverty or sense of futility. Cherish them. They are the very foundations of God's grace. Don't lose faith. This type of faith is very close to love!

Am in mid-60's so I figure it's my last hurrah! Forgive me for suggesting the Litany of Humility. I have been praying it for two years and it works. As soon as I started I got reprimanded by a holy priest I quietly admire and immediately thanked the Lord for that. I admit I started to feel my pride got stung for a little before I realized it was a gift from the Lord to have this priest correct me. It takes time because at this age we have added many layers of pompous uselessness. . . The fact that you're praying means Jesus loves you because you would not be praying if He wasn't calling you to Himself. The Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis may be helpful too. Except I found I can only chew on a sentence or two at a time without making a mess. Ask the Blessed Mother for help too. To Jesus through Mary! She was the ultimate contemplative!

Greetings, brother. I do live the drama between the eastern and western christian spiritualities, since I feel so attracted by the East, but I constantly have to find the spiritual reason for the Latin triumph in history. I would like to share with you, who is a brother in Providence, the latest development on that ecclesiology and spirituality: Since God is Love, the main way to union with God is Love. But, because of Sin, it is easier for us to love creatures than the Creator. So the latin approach believes in a supposed almost natural transition from the love of the things of the world to the love of God, that's why modern movements like the Opus Dei and Legio Mariae focus on the laity and secular life, with the founder of the first even saying that we should love the world. But the Eastern tradition, and of the desert, is marked by a supposed holy hatred of the World, taken from Saint John's Letter. To me it seems that Love of God is Repentance; that they are equivalent. But still the Love from God is the primary cause of our repentance, and therefore should be the main object of our contemplation, in whichever form.
