Hello! I'm Jeanne Swartz. Welcome to my channel. :-)
I love to create things using shuttle tatted lace, a magical art form that I saw my Aunt Merc doing when I was six years old.
My videos will be showing you how I do things, just so you have a place to start. Practice, perseverance, and patience....you CAN do this! I hope I can help you see the beautiful things this art and your imagination will bring to you.

Shuttle tatting - adding new chain thread
In this video, I talk about how to add new thread when making a rings only pattern and how to add new thread when making a rings and chains pattern.
The basic steps are to tie a square knot with your old and new thread and then hide the ends in the first few stitches of your next ring or chain. The ends should follow your core thread to be hidden.
Thank you for watching and I hope you keep practicing! :-)

Shuttle tatting - how to start a chain using a paperclip
มุมมอง 2.1Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I talk about two methods of starting a chain using a paperclip to create a joining picot. If you are using one color for both your chains and rings, you can use the continuous thread method (CTM) with the shuttle thread attached to your ball or second shuttle. If you are using two colors, one for the chains and a second for the rings, you will tie a knot and create your picot dir...

Shuttle tatted bracelet - easy pattern with two closure options - lobster or tatted rose and chain
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
This is an easy pattern to remember....all rings are (5 stitches, join, 5 stitches), all chains except for the ends are 10 stitches. In this video, I discuss using different threads and yarn, as well as using either a lobster clasp or a tatted rose acting as a "button". The total length of the bracelet that works for me is 7.5 inches, including the lobster clasp if using one. This pattern is ea...
Shuttle Tatting with Buttons - Part 3 - Project Ideas
มุมมอง 641ปีที่แล้ว
In this third video of the three part series, I talk about some project ideas you can make using your practice button motifs. Having a button in the middle of the tatting creates a solid base to glue flowers to. Very simple but very elegant, with many different color combinations to inspire you. Please keep practicing and thank you for watching!
Shuttle Tatting with Buttons - Part 2 - Chains and Joins only
มุมมอง 709ปีที่แล้ว
In this second video of a three part series, I talk about tatting around a button using chains and joins only. This is a good way to practice making joins to a button as well as making consistent chains. Please practice this technique.....you will watch yourself improve in consistent tension and joins. Thank you for watching!
Shuttle Tatting with Buttons - Part 1 - Rings and Chains
มุมมอง 1.1Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video, the first in a three part series, I discuss using buttons in shuttle tatting. This is a simple pattern to practice your rings and chains while joining to the four holes in a standard button. Using size 10 thread - a 5/8 inch (15mm) button is recommended Using size 20 thread - a 1/2 inch (12mm) button is recommended The pattern follows..... Ring A 5 (join to any hole in the button...
Shuttle tatting - How to read different tatting pattern styles
มุมมอง 749ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I discuss the three main types of tatting patterns.....written paragraph style, short notation style and diagrams. The example pattern I am using is from Anne Orr's "Classic Tatting Patterns" (page 21), published in 1985. This book is an unabridged republication of "Tatting, Book No 35, Revised", as published by Anne Orr in 1940. My hope with this video is to explain the differen...
Shuttle tatting - a "new experiment using old supplies" - make your own variegated tatting thread
มุมมอง 337ปีที่แล้ว
If you don't have a lot of variegated thread to tat with..... or you don't want to buy any more..... and you have a lot of stranded embroidery thread you won't use for embroidery..... you can use it to tat with! In this video, I talk about separating individual strands of cotton floss, holding different colors together and winding them on a tatting shuttle to make simple flowers.
Shuttle tatting only the first half of each stitch - Josephine rings and spiral chains
มุมมอง 317ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I talk about the idea of only tatting the first half of each stitch, over and over again, to make your ring or chain. You can also use only the second half of the stitch, if you prefer. The idea is only to use one half of each stitch, not both first and second halves. Making a ring using only one half stitches is called a Josephine ring and can be used for many decorative purpose...
Shuttle tatting - more tatted square examples
มุมมอง 423ปีที่แล้ว
Using the same tatted lace pattern with different colors and types of fabric can create totally different looks. I wanted to share a few examples of these. This square tatting pattern is from the book "New Tatting" by Tomoko Morimoto. It is the Square Flower Motif shown on page 76. Thank you for watching and please keep practicing. :-)
Shuttle tatting - working with two shuttles, rings on chains, thrown rings
มุมมอง 1.7Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I talk about another technique to add to your practice - using two shuttles. By having thread on two shuttles, you can make rings going in two different directions. Simply by switching shuttles, you can create a tatted ring in the middle of a chain. Understanding this technique will give you something new to practice as well as open up an endless variety of things you can make. T...

One suggestion is Handy Hands (USA), many local craft stores carry the plastic tatting shuttles. Any thread can be used to practice with if it will fit through the hole of the shuttle post.

Thank you for this. I'm new to tatting and really want to make this bracelet. I have made the start and followed your video to make the first set of 4. I'm not sure how you make the next (and other) sets of four. Do you make the top chains and circles across and then go around the other end and make the lower halves of the sets of 4 on the way back? If not, I'm not sure on how to make the sets of 4 all at once all the way across.
Hello! You're welcome and thank you for your comment. Yes, you described the process exactly right. You work two rings then a chain then two more rings, working that way along one side for the length of the bracelet you want. Work the end as instructed then when you begin down the second side, you join the next set of two rings to the corresponding set of two rings on the first side, thus creating your groups of four. I hope that made sense and that I have clarified things for you so you can continue on. Have fun and thank you very much for watching! 🙂
@@shuttletatting Thank you so much for the prompt answer. 🙂
@@user-sr5wx2gf4j I always like to help people have fun, as quickly as possible! Have a great day! 🙂
This is the most comprehensive video on adding thread I have seen and I have watched a LOT of them. Thank you!
I am really happy to hear this! You know, actually, thinking about your comment, I think I created this video because I couldn't find an explanation that made sense to me anywhere else. Sometimes, especially with tatting in my opinion, you have to wait awhile to find someone who thinks like you do.....everyone comprehends and learns differently.....I am really happy that my efforts made sense to you. Thank you for watching and for your comment! 🙂
This is my first tatting project and it looks so cute! Thanks for the video ^_^

I am very happy to hear that! Thank you for your comment and for watching, and I hope you are having fun! 🙂
hello, beautiful work. I have been tatting for a while, 30 plus years. i have come across a pattern and for the life of me i can not figure out. Hopefully you can. Here we go--- Shuttle 1 SpR5. Do not close. Shuttle 2 R5-5-5-5. shuttle 1 SpR5. Shuttle 2 R5-5-5-5. Shuttle 1 SpR5. Shit 2 R5-5-5-5 Shuttle 2 SPr5. You should have 1 center ring and 3 rings going around the outside of that ring. ??????? i don't get the leave ring open and how to ??????? Thank you in advance i hope you can help. Ive looked through lots of videos Nothing..the book itself was not helpful. again that you
Hello, thank you for watching and for your question. Without seeing the book and pattern in full, the "SpR5" notation gives me an idea that maybe these are 3 rings "thrown" off a split ring center. Not an easy technique, in my opinion. And I would hope there would be an instruction where to close the split ring. The other idea that this could be using is the "self closing mock ring" or SCMR. If you do a search for that term, there are LOTS of tutorials and instructions available. This technique is basically using a chain with a loop at the beginning. After you work the chain stitches with rings "thrown" off, you pass your working shuttle through the starting loop and "close the ring", but actually you are just bringing the two ends of the chain together. The confusing part is that the pattern you offered could be worked using either technique. Hopefully, though, my explanation will help you find the way that works best for YOU. Please keep tatting and having fun! Have a great day! 🙂
I'm stuck because my ring doesn't close...help!
Without being able to see how you are doing things, the suggestions I would offer are these....try making your knots a little looser as this might make it easier to pull the ring closed. Also, possibly try using a larger size thread to practice with....it might be easier to see the two sides of the knot and what they are doing. Good luck and please keep practicing. Thank you for watching. 🙂
@shuttletatting i was able to do it after much practice. Thank you!
@@PalaciosWorldwide YAY!! I'm so glad to hear it! Great job! 😀

This video was so helpful. I never knew how to close the ring. The folding technique solved the problem. Thanks Jeanne.
I'm happy I could help, that fold was a mystery to me for a long time as well. I hope you have many days of fun tatting going forward. Thank you for watching! 🙂
If you are going to teach these very basic steps, then you should realize that we new beginners are not good at judging the size of our picots, and maybe you should use a guage while teaching us.
Thank you for your comments. In my opinion, each person is different. Every person learns differently and every person teaches differently. Tatting is not an exact science. I have never used a picot gauge. I learned how to make consistent picots by practicing. A lot. I would suggest practicing to find your own style and method, a way to make things that you are happy with. I appreciate your constructive criticism on my teaching method but hope that everyone will view learning how to tat as the adventure that it is. Thank you for watching. 🙂
How did you create the new loop around your hand after you closed the first one for the ring? Did you use the yarn from the shuttle to wrap around your hand? I saw others use yarn from the ball but doesn’t look like yours is connected to the ball
Yes, the second ring was created using the thread from the shuttle. A rings-only pattern only uses a shuttle with no ball attached. Once the first ring is closed, the shuttle thread is wrapped around the hand to start the second ring. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching! 🙂
@@shuttletatting thank you
Thank You so much 😊, I have been trying forever to close, I finally did it today
I am SO HAPPY for you! What a great way to start the new year! I remember the day I was able to close my first ring.....almost 30 years ago....I have to say...you may not be able to stop now! 🙂 Thank you for watching and happy new year!
Thank you so much for putting up a video. I was getting frustrated trying to find tatting videos in English. I tried yo undertsnad the other languages but failed.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad I could help! 🙂
This has been super, super helpful!! I've only done a little needle tatting so far, and am starting with shuttle tatting now. But it's been very confusing to figure out how I'm supposed to know which shuttle to use, or how to know if I'm working on the shuttle or ball thread. This video has worked best for me, it really "clicked" for me when I watched it!
I am so happy that I could help de-mystify this for you! Tatting is FUN! I've been doing it for almost 30 years and it's still fun for me. Having something that's getting in the way of that can be annoying. I'm glad I could help you, good luck on your shuttle tatting journey! Thank you for your comment and for watching! 🙂
This is very helpful! I'm only just starting to look at patterns (I've just followed TH-cam tutorials so far), and it all felt a bit overwhelming at first. This has definitely helped a lot!
I'm glad I could help with your transition from watching videos to trying written patterns. There are so many talented tatting designers creating patterns for all different levels of experience. Starting with a solid understanding of the basics helps keep tatting FUN! One word of caution....speaking from experience.....once you start collecting patterns, you may end up with more than you could ever make in several lifetimes! Thank you for watching! 🙂
Hi Mam wow it's so beautiful I loved it thank you
Thank you! 🙂
Your explanations are clear and easy to understand. I’ve been tatting for 20 years and have learned so much in the last year from watching videos. This one would have been very helpful in the beginning. I used the cut and glue method because I had never seen any other method until recently. Combining four different ways to deal with the ends in one video is a great idea! Thank you.
Reading your comments makes me so happy, and I'm glad I could suggest new ways for you to think about ends. Offering the knowledge I have accumulated from almost 30 years of tatting in videos is a new experience for me. But I'm glad this way is available now and that we can help each other learn more about tatting! Thank you for watching! Have a wonderful day! Jeanne 🙂
Thanks a lot for sharing your advices and talent❤

Beautiful work!!! Hang in there!!!
Thank you so much!!!!
You made it look very easy but I do know that it's a matter of practice, I can needle tat but I am now giving the shuttle a go fingers crossed its not as easy as the needle. But thank you for taking the time to share your experience and advice.
Thank you for watching and for your comment 🙂 In my opinion, you are perhaps one step ahead of the "very" beginner, who has never done any tatting at all. Because you know how to needle tat, you know what the thread is supposed to be doing to create the knots. Now, for you, it is just a matter of learning and mastering the tension in your fingers, creating the knots there, instead of on the needle. You are correct....either method requires practice; but I know you can do this! Good luck! 😀
As a beginner, what supplies should I invest in? Do I need more than one shuttle, I was looking on Amazon and you have very many options, I was wondering what you would recommend? I think I have watched enough videos to confirm that this is something I want tp try. Thanks so much for the very clear instructions Take Care Hugs and Smiles
You are correct....if you search "tatting shuttles" on Amazon, a LOT of options come up. I would recommend 1-2 packages of the "two shuttles per pack" plastic Clover shuttles (solid colors like blue and pink, green and yellow etc). I would not recommend the tortoise shell style. Those tend to be very stiff to wind and use. Starting out with 3-4 shuttles allows you to have a couple different colors wound at the same time, if you want to practice with one color as rings and another color as chains. I'm so glad you have decided to give it a try! I know you can do this! Happy tatting! 😀
