This channel is centered around our suburban Florida backyard garden, chickens, and home projects. Gardening and taking care of our chickens are fun hobbies for us. We are by no means experts, but offer advice based on our own experiences and research. I do my best to post a video every 1-2 weeks). Thank you so much for watching!

Considerations After a Hurricane (or any storm) for your Backyard Chickens
มุมมอง 11721 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video, I talk about a few things to consider after a hurricane before putting your chickens back in their coop. We just experienced Hurricane Milton in our area and luckily there was NO damage to my Eglu Cube! Kudos to Eglu for building a great coop! HUGE thanks to my neighbors for offering to take my girls!!!

Good info. Like your videos. Thank you
@@joncloutier9597 thank you for watching and thank you for your kind words. I appreciate it!
I actually used both of these in my new raised beds so I am excited to see how they do but both look like good products.
@@mattgreen8827 yes they both look great! Keep me posted on how Biofiber works for you:) I have never used it before. I will be posting an update video in the near future! Happy gardening!👩🌾
Great video thanks!
As always great vid! Thanks!
Wow great video!
@@jaytan7673 thank you!
I would combine the two bags. Looks like they would compliment each other.
@@joncloutier9597 I know right???!!! I really am considering doing a video in the future with both mixed together. It would be really interesting. Thank you:)

Looks like you are working!

I have always wondered, why dont they have roosting bars? What do you think of this study? I am raising babies roght now and i forgot to add the perch I thought they would be terrified when I added it few days later but they were ok and they definitely are using it at 2 weeks they are 3.5 and they are perching 17" off the ground. I never showed. Them thry do it on their own. I woke up today and thry were on the highest oerch lined up im wondering if they slept there pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7858165/
@@dianeespinoza8647 what an interesting paper! I am gonna reread it and take notes! I would have liked to see a diverse group of chicken breeds and a larger sample size, BUT regardless it provided some great information:) they can always repeat the study with other chickens. When I initially purchased the Eglu I was confused that they kept calling those the roosting bars😂 however, all the other aspects of the Eglu I love❤️then there are the perches outside. Thank you so much for your comment and sharing that paper!
Yeah but a 12’ run on the Cube has half the foraging space of the 12’ run on the Pro right? So it’s not like for like. But yep, way too much monies!!!
@@Lordlala.sketchbook very true, I am pretty sure I didn’t discuss that in the video:) good catch! I agree too much money!

Thank you for this video. We have tons of pine straw due to the many trees in out yard. I'm glad to know we can save money and have something efficient to use in the garden.
You are lucky! I have to pay for my pine straw and you have it naturally:). Definitely use it! I would dry it out first and then go for it. Happy gardening!
Mmmmmmm! We are approaching first frost time in Arkansas. We have a long growing season, but I always want more!! I did plant a fall/winter garden. I bought those Chinese broccoli seeds after watching your video last winter. I have a bunch of seedlings. I probably planted them too late, but I am going to protect everything with my frost covers--I think we have a few more weeks before we have to worry about frost. We will probably be running the AC at Thanksgiving.
Yah, frost covers will work. We have experienced some unexpected frosts down here in FL (it is shocking, I know:) and my Chinese Broccoli did fine. Sounds like you are very prepared, which is good! Remember they are cut and come again, so don't harvest the entire plant. You will be amazed at how fast they grow and how much you can harvest. They are really hardy! Keep me posted on this! Happy gardening!
Awesome🎉
Thank you! Cheers!
Subbed. Nice harvest! The texture on the potato looked wonderful.
@@monmac7387 thank you so much! Yes they were delicious!
Good info thank you.
Can you recommend a chicken cam
I have friends that have used the Arlo and some have wired cameras (because they have access to electrical outlets). I actually have found the Blink has worked well. I have an older model and it was only supposed to last 2 years, BUT it has already lasted 3 years, which is pretty amazing!
There is no going back once you’ve had purple inside and out sweet potatoes!!! We’ve made ice cream with them before - call it Taro to fancify it.😉
Oooh that sounds great! I am going to have to give that a try!
You are adorable. I love the real life-ness of the setting. Trying to think how to cure our purple majesty sweet potatoes in Michigan in October…maybe cover with the heating pad for the massage table on low heat high up in the bathroom?😂
Yah, all you need is heat and humidity! Maybe put them in plastic bags with some holes and punch holes in them and put them near your massage table or even a furnace (just don't burn your house down:). Your house will be perfect for long storage:). I have the opposite problem here in Florida. No issues curing, but as you know we don't have basements down here and it is hot most of the year! Happy gardening!
Crazy❤!
I know, right?! I was hoping to do that this year, but those nervy deer ate all my okra.
@@medtronicmom I totally get it! It is shocking how something so cute can be so destructive🦌☺️
@@tanakahomestead8820 I just thought they would stay away from them because they are fuzzy.
@@tanakahomestead8820 becayse the okra is fuzzy--not the deer!!
@@medtronicmom I knew what you meant😂those deer know what is good let me tell you!
You make growing food look so effortless
I promise it isn't! For example, this summer has been really tough with mold and pests. Never had a growing season like this before, but it was bonkers:). I still did well with my okra, but what a headache. Then the storm blew by. My poor okra took a beating from the wind and rainl:(. Thank you for watching!
Good info❤
@@ninatanaka8816 happy you enjoyed it!
So glad to hear from you! Thankful you guys are alright. Hope you get power back soon. I love mt Eglu, too! I think they are great, safe coops!
@@medtronicmom yes they really did a great job with the design and I am super impressed it conquered the elements! Much respect to my Eglu❤️
Thankfully you are alright 🙏🏻
@@gingerwhitmire3493 ❤️❤️❤️
This is a very good video. But I will still buy Earthgro because at the price I can use it like mulch. I realize that for many/most people who really want compost-as-compost, Black Kow might well be the superior choice. No criticism of this wonderfully valuable video; but there is still a place for Earthgro in the market. Btw; another superior compost is Sweet Peet.
Thank you for your comment. I know plenty of people that like Earthgro, like yourself, and I always say do what works. Some friends of mine use Earthgro and love it! No judging here:). I do these comparison videos purely for fun. I will definitely check out that Sweet Peet. Happy gardening!
You and your family stay safe 🙏
Thank you. We are doing everything we can.
That's what happens when you wait "just one more day" lol
@@FC2ESWS yes, you are SO correct! Reminds me of “a couple more days construction.” You should look that up on TH-cam it is funny:) My husband literally says that😂
Was just thinking about you and wondering if your family is in the path. Take care.
@@medtronicmom aww thank you for your kind thoughts. Yes, unfortunately we are in the path of this thing. Praying for safety. Could care less about tangibles:)
Kudos. Try chicken manure vs. black cow.
@@rossmullins8708 that is next on my list! I did do a video with my homemade compost vs black kow and it had chicken manure in it, but I do have a brand that I plan on comparing it to. Look for that in weeks to come;)
Wonderful. I loved this follow-up comparison test. I would like to see a comparison using chicken manure as a subject. Thanks.
@@rossmullins8708 it is on my to do list:) thank you for watching!

Wow
Must be the dwarf variety like I have…but definitely don’t taste like pineapple or mango it just has its own taste lol
I could just have messed up taste buds:)
U can eat its seeds
@@-_-.017 yah and some people eat the tender small leaves:) I really need to try that!!!
The deer thought I planted my okra too close together, so they ate ALL my okra plants. I didn't know they liked okra. They apparently like the small variety I planted this past summer.
Well the nerve! Apparently they are smart creatures:). Stinks though, because I know you did not plant your okra for them!
@@tanakahomestead8820 are you guys going to be ok with hurricane Milton? Just thinking about you and praying for your safety. Hope you were not hit by Helene. Take care.
@@medtronicmom I am praying we will be. It is definitely coming straight for us, but thankfully we are not near water. I pray all of those people evacuate that are close to the coast. Thank you very much for your kind thoughts and concern.

Yep! I've had the SAME experience. It's marketing. Backyard chicken owners typically won't have or consider the Horse Stall bag - again, it's marketing. Well done, and thank you for posting this!
