Great Presenter, and a very interesting story. My grandfather worked for the Kinner Aircraft company and built a scale model of a Kinner aircraft complete with a Kinner Radial after his retirement. It was a functional model and he actually flew it as an RC model. He taught me how to fly, and design principles of aircraft, which I now use today, although I bend the physics quite a bit to achieve modern goals for some unusual aircraft. What a great and fun time in aviation history, and so well presented. The presenter is very cute too. Love her enthusiasm and obvious knowledge, as well as wit, and intellect! Hope to visit someday!

They FINALLY obtained a B-17 Flying Fortress for their collection in the last several years (Shoo Shoo Baby, which is currently undergoing reassembly) and now this fascinating piece of history. Hopefully they present it as the treasure it is!

That is so cool! The Birds have a history of being flown by women, Anne was not the only one. Do you have any photos, or know the name of the owner? We have a lot of the records of the entire Bird fleet and might be able to track down more info.

Bird. Also built by women in long Island. Kinner motors are hand rebuilt, mainly by nickel plating the insides of cylinders. Chrome is dangerous. The Kinners last longer, between rebuilds, than most plane engines, and they have excellent " specific consumption" horsepower per pound of gas. They are also lighter strained and quiet for motors with no muffler. Birds are lifty instead of fast, and have excellent glide ratios. They slow down well and fly on less power than most similar sized planes, and it's harder to get hurt in a Bird.

@kelchmuseum First of all, Ami, I was joking about your age. Obviously, being the creative director of an aviation museum is not something for someone in their teens. I meant no offense, but at my age, everyone under the age of 30 looks like a kid. Secondly, congratulations on your pilots' license. I loved your story about learning in that flying canoe! I remember seeing pictures of it. Although I am not a pilot, I love and have studied much about all forms of aviation and am particularly fond of the "golden years" myself. Thirdly, thank you for the podcast. It was the first one I have ever heard. My kids have always tried to get me to listen to one, but that was the first. I love your youthful excitement about history, aviation and your museum. I look forward to many more of your videos in the future. Blessings, David.

@kelchmuseum Case in point. Piano soundboards are made out of high quality Spruce. Steinway has always had their own lumberyard. With other varieties as well. So when WW2 hit the US, Steinway went into producing the Gliders used on D-Day. Also, as you probably already know, Bill Boing was a lumber magnate before he decided to try to get his own airplane built. Spruce! It's the good stuff.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh remains one of the top (female) persons I've ever known (about). Like no one else, she resembled a real-life version of "Snow White", quite naturally and really. Her aircraft here, in pristine condition is priceless as a demonstration of their 100% devotion to each other and her rare compatibility to her great aviator husband by being herself a fully-active pilot, yet fully herself too. AML is "a unicorn", one in a million, so rare, thought non-existent by most people. Her husband was about as legendary and rare as well. My late-life learning about the Lindbergh's relationship is SO REFRESHING - particularly their still today little-known achievements that were incomparable too, e.g., his warwinning contribution in WWII military service and long-range aviation and her fit and complimentary depth, breadth and heartful literary and cultural achievements, stand by their own fine merit were distinctive and distinguishes her as incomparably natural, selfless, interdependent and loveable as can be. She personifies the female part of "the greatest American generation" yet. Cheers! M G T O W red pill

I know Anne did a lot of flying before they bought her Bird, and I found a lot of little articles and mentions in newspapers in my research for this that mention her training in various locations. A particularly interesting (and somewhat sad) little blurb mentioned how a reporters plane was flying so close to the Lindberghs to try to get a photo of Anne at the controls that Charles gave up the lesson as too dangerous and landed for the day. We'd recommend you check out the Brodhead Pietenpol Association for more info on projects and building, the community there is really informative. Their website is www.pietenpols.org. Interesting fact about Poland, thanks for sharing. Yes, there are so many paint schemes - one of the coolest parts about the Pietenpols is that each one is very unique, paint schemes especially. Silver aircraft paint was cheaper than other colors in the USA in the 1920s and 30s, so a lot of early aircraft have plain silver wings for that reason.
