As children growing up in Wynberg, Cape Town, we always were exposed to steam locomotives, and what an impact they have made on our lives! We loved the steamers which transported we Capies from Cape Town central to as far as Simon's Town. Granny would take us up the road to Wynberg Station where we would watch these amazing steam engines stop, start and chuff their way both down and up. The railway from Cape Town to Simon's Town is slghtly downhill and the return trip slightly uphill, and dear old Granny would explain to us the reason for the different chuffing sounds. The uphill route would cause the engine to say " I think I can, I think I can, I think I can", and the downhill route engines said "I knew I could, I knew I could, I knew I could" - at a faster pace! I wonder if anyone out there has such lovely memories of Cape Town's suburban railways. I am eighty years young, and the memories remain wonderful! We nicknamed those steam engines with smoke deflectors "Big Bills". Such a pity that these machines and their expert human masters no longer exist!

shes a stunner, but extremely weak. A tiny british GWR pannier tank is stronger than these engines were, which is strange for a garratt type. These were branchline garratts

We rode the Blue Train through the Karoo behind a 25 Condenser. Almost no smoke. Good ride. We went up Kimberly. 1986.

Wow, i was a fireman in the 70's and this was our locomotive in Bethlehem in the Free State, my driver was Marx❤

Wow how this brings back so many memories for me. Of course this was my workplace for years. John Gilberthorpe and i had our own regular engine 3488 ENCHANTRESS which I see in your clip being hauled through the shed by 3481 at 11minutes. Thankfully we saved her from scrap and now she stands proud at Sandstone Railway in Ficksburg. Thanks for posting this great clip

The good old days on the Union Limited when SA still had a railway. I as a fireman worked this train many times and just loved it. Montagu and the Knysna branch were the easier sections for me. Fast mainlines such as out of Kimberley were the hard sections especially with a hand fired loco. Thanks for posting

Oh my golly this really brought back memories. The lines, locos and especially the people. Of course as I was an SAR fireman I worked many of these specials right up till 1996. I once knew so many faces in this video. So many good friends from passengers, organisers, train crew and all. Of course many of the locos also I fired on these wonderful trains. What a great video. At the beginning you start off with 15CA 2054 and its great regular driver Andries van Tonder. This great man spent his life on steam and is still with us today and is nearing 90 years old. I worked with him and on his pride loco CHEETA many times. Then at the end you have GMAM 4072 over Lootsberg. This great GMAM was my favorite of the pack. Again I worked her many times but better still I now have her cabside number plate in my collection. Sadly neither 2054 or 4072 exist anymore having been scrapped. Thanks for posting this great clip and bringing back so many memories of my great life on these trains

Hi I fired that steam locomotive 1882 She was a pull locomotive when our regular locomotive went to washout She was also easy to fire

A really inspirational layout with a lovely mix of SA structures and stock on the line.

If you not born in the era of steam than you can not understand whats going on in a mans head. You hear it you smelling the burning coal but,the best is when you saw the roaring giant . I hope one day i can show my son this is the giant that i grew up with.Thank you for such a nice movie. I love steam and i got steam in my veins.

Pretty sure I did this trip but with "Daizy" many years ago when I was 18 (26 years ago). I heard that daizy had since been scrapped after being involved in an accident

Thank you so much for sharing the Knysna footage. It's very hard to find shunting film of the old station layout.

Only my opinion - but better than the current mk2 version of her as an oil burner. Fully understand that in order to keep it functional it had to be converted but meh 🤦
