Gilbert Anderson Metis fiddle and dance, Edmonton 1994.
Filmed at the Rupertsland Colloquium of 1994. I was over from the Orkney Islands explaining how fiddlers from my homeland brought Scottish fiddle music to Canada as employees of the Hudson's Bay Company, and we followsed it with this concert performance. Gilbert acknowledged his HBC ancestors were from Orkney so it was a sort of reunion.

In the 18th and 19th centuries men of the Hudson's Bay Company, who were mainly from the Orkney Islands, introduced the native people of the "Nor'wast" to traditional fiddle music. In the late 19th century Scottish Baffin Straits whalers, who overwintered at their shore station in Cumberland Sound, introduced more modern Scottish tunes such as "Captain Campbell" and "The Barren Rocks of Aden." ...
Yes, Scottish tunes for sure. 👍😕
I remember Colin in Coppermine.
I spent a great week in his company up in Inuvik at the Gt Northern Arts Festival when he and I were both invited to provide the music. He must be a great miss but I see that his son Alvin and Brennan Firth are keeping up the tradition. Brennan's Gt gt grandfather was and HBC man from my home town of Stromness in Orkney.
3RD player is my Grandfather Frank Cockne
It was a pleasure to meet him Janelle.
What is the name of the piece Kole Crook is playing near the end?
Sorry Samuel, I'm not able to help you with that one.
17:12 - what is the song Frank plays here? I heard it in another video on TH-cam called “tuktoyaktuk longest day of the year” showing the beautiful midnight sun. ☀️ Any ideas? Thanks and love from Australia! 🇦🇺
I believe it's his own tune - I didn't catch the name, if he mentioned it.
Just heard that Colin sadly passed away on the 3rd Dec '21. He will be a big miss in his community. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Thanks for sharing Len, this is a great film. That would have been a great bunch of fiddlers to get a tune with. While I was watching the first part of the film my Dad asked who was playing, he said the tunes were like the standards they would dance to in the Fetlar Hall in Shetland when he was growing up. Definitely a strong Scottish connection in the music.
I've forgotten the singer's name. If any of you can identify him please let me know. He was in Inuvik for the whole week of the festival.
