Can Culture Help raise Black Students Educational Attainment? Lecturer Dwight Maxwell says Yes.
In America and the UK, Chinese and Indian students are top of the league tables. Why do most Asian students excel above their peers in primary and secondary education?
There is an Education issue - but for you it is only an issue if you are ambitious for your children or young relatives. Black children are near the bottom of educational league tables in UK and USA. White parents may also be concerned as their children are also slipping down the rankings.
As an English lecturer, Dwight Maxwell was intrigued by this phenomenon. South and East Asian students score higher on the American SATs and English GCSE exams. But this trend, which might spur an IQ debate among educators, is not as mysterious as you might think.
It must be stressed there are many high-flying top black intelligent students - as there are in every race or nationality. But looking at the stats - some students feel average is fine. Others don't realise the value of their FREE education and drop out or coast - and they are pulling down the metrics.
In Dwight's new book: "It's Not About Grades, It's About Culture" -- He unpacks this mystery using a cultural approach. Could the methods detailed work for under-performing black students.
Despite being top or near the top of the table in primary school achievement levels, Black students trail off to near bottom in secondary schools in the UK or high school in the USA. We examine reasons why, and explore how African cultural references can awaken interest and pride as well as raise self esteem.

There is no such thing as ‘brown’ because in the system you’re either black or white it’s all depending on skin color. Yes, some Africans may have feared guns, but they got over that fast. Many African armies reequipped themselves with firearms and quickly turned those weapons against Europeans, often with success. The problem is, Africans still relied on European suppliers to provide firearms. African ability to manufacture firearms was undercut by European firearms flooding African markets.

Thank you for sharing this important information! I was born in England and have lived in Jamaica since 2012. After visiting Barbados, Ghana, and Congo, I came to the same conclusion (about Europeans dividing the royal families of West Africa and taking their enemies as slaves). This may also explain why Caribbeans frequently struggle to pass on generational wealth. Disputes over probate (known as ‘dead lef’) are frequently contentious in Jamaica and a major reason for the high murder rate. The design, buildings, and smell of Downtown, Kingston, Jamaica are almost identical to the Downtown area of Accra, Ghana. Also, the popular Jamaican entertainer Capleton often refers to himself as ‘King Shango’. Keep up the good work and please continue to share your wisdom. Knowledge is power and unity is strength!

This is a great topic. As an indigenous American who has mixed ancestry, I would also like people from the continent to understand what it meant to have dark skin across the Americas. I find people from Africa need even more UNITY as the tribalist mindset that lead to slavery taking hold and overwhelming the sense of morality still persists. People of the Americas can identify with the diaspora but I find that Africans give us resistance. I always hear them say we r from Africa yet the treatment isn't there. I feel like they align themselves in proximity to whiteness. And diminsh our African roots if we can't specifically identify with their tribal cultures. If u can't speak a tribal language or make a tribal dish, I'm not African enough. I've never had this uneasiness with people from the Caribbean. I think a lot more research needs to be done when visiting each others countries so ignorance doesn't continue to separate. I'm poud that the diaspora has a lot of unity and mutual respect. I believe it's a model that Africans can also follow.

Who is this clown? The description says he’s an African? From where? I mean listen to his accent. He mentioned the Nigerian ethnic group Hausa. The largest group dragged in chains to the USA (and possibly to the Americas) were Igbo. Africans didn’t land there because of a dispute over who would be king. They were captured. The slavers paid people to capture slaves. It was an economic system. They created a disparity after using gunpowder discovered in China. Instead of fireworks they used it to make weapons. There were slave kingdoms who wealth came from the participation in the slave trade. He’s an embarrassment. There’s too much information on this topic to give any credibility to this nonsense. I’m not disputing he can see Hausa People. I appalled at his African selling someone over a throne. Did get this from Roots or something? We’re talking about 12-15 million people between the 1500s and the 1800s. This title is an embarrassment to African and Caribbean scholarship. Truly just any scholarship on the issue.

I often use a Game of Thrones analogy to help counter the European accusatory-excusers for African slavery - that "they sold their own people" and, on one strand of it, try to clarify that the "Africans" (no local concept of Africa) had no realisation that they were not dealing with just another tribe/nation but the fking White Walkers, and that they were ALL ultimately to be directly targeted alike, and for more brutality and death than they had any precedence for whatsoever! But had they had that knowledge of what they were REALLY dealing with, they might have realised that local reform AND unity with former enemies - maybe for the first time EVER - from the very first moments of contact would have been necessary. That would have been a tough ask, too. Of course, it was all across the globe, that local peoples did not realise a need for local unity vs Europeans until it was far too late - often at a time when the colonial states were on their last legs following the Second Grand Imperialist War..."WW2" is the common name for that. Some European settler states are still going strong (Ho! Ho!), of course. Every time I explain this, there is a moment of silence. As is they had never thought of this aspect, or had any education on the subject

This guy's take is highly disputed regarding how slaves were taken. They were bought from the kings/kingdoms, not captured. Many of these African kingdoms, like Hausaland for example, were known to have far more slaves than citizens, and the intra-african slave trade was a huge industry. The European powers initially did not steal free people, except with some exceptions. They purchased or traded for them. After colonizing these regions it was a different story, however.

When you cannot agree among your own people, you cannot grow.. Truth. What we can agree upon is that I am true American Black Woman. My grandmother's grandmother died making lemonade in her "mass's" kitchen at the sink. That I know. My grandmother told me (she was born in 1900). She told me the horrific stories that my great-grandmother and great-grandfather had to endure at the hands of white people. I am an African descendant of slaves--real slaves that were hurt on every level possible, and as a woman, I have not, and will not EVER give my body, mind, soul nor appreciation to a white man... EVER. Thats all. I realize this video is not about this precisely, but that is my stance, and it has been my stance ever since I was little. I hear you and I understand. I use to feel like you so I understand. I'm a historian and I'm the family historian for my family. My grandmother was the third oldest child of her mother out of 11 children. Do to some weather conditions in the early 1900's my great grandmother went to live with the white family she worked for bc she was not welcome at her MIL house bc she had an illegitimate mixed race child B4 she was married. She stayed with her employers for a few years and when she came back home she had my grandmother who was three years old. That was unconscionable in those days. But her husband wanted her just the same but he never let her live it down as most men couldn't in those days. My grandmother rarely talked about herself but when she did you learned a lot. Anyway she always told me the story of how her grandmother was raped for 14 consecutive nights at 13 years old on the way to a slave auction in New Orleans. Thx God the mother and daughter were sold to the same family and shortly after were freed. My grandmother hated her biological father and white men in general to the day she died.

Thank you my dear brother. I'm black American so we're a little more mixed but we need to hear this. Generally we have Nigerian, Ghanaian, Angolan blood and then British/Welsh/Irish. I've never heard anyone speak so thoughtfully about our forebears. The message of UNITY is both timely and timeless. The funny thing is West Africans often don't recognize black Americans from our look, but we can often feel you deeply in our spirit in a way you can't imagine. As in the way a sighted person's other senses become sharper when their sight is taken away, the ripping of our history awoke something dormant, a primordial connection that can't be broken no matter what. The record books take us back to our 2nd or 3rd grandfathers. The one before that..was probably the brother from another mother sold to the Europeans. You fill my heart with love. Thank you.

Most Black Americans look like Nigerian/Cameroonian descent - that “mix” just creates the appearance you can find all over Africa, especially the islands or the coastal regions, Cabo Verde, Seychelles, Cape Coast, etc

What a wonderful man. No so long ago in my culture you had the heir and the spare. The first born male would get everything and the others would be sent to serve as monks and to the army. It must happen to many cultures in the past.

Some of what this brother is saying is true but it’s far from describing the entire ordeal accurately. There’s no “one way” to describe the slave trade as it was a very long and complex affair. There were many instances and events over hundreds of years. Many people and entities involved. We have to be careful about what we pass on to others as fact. Dr. Leslie Alexander PhD is a very credible source on the subject. Also from an African perspective Frimpong Anokye is an incredible source.

African governments still carry on with divide and rule strategy. When the wicket white snake from the east first arrived, they teaded in ivory, gold, tropical fruits and exotic animals. In my opinion, it was just an advance scout because what happened to have changed from trading to now enslaving the people? I still stand that the coastal villages were subdued, held as hostages and the men made to get free Africans from hinterland as slaves.

You are correct, the only/main black history taught in schools, even in Primary, is slavery and it is uncomfortable teaching this small percentage of black history. I have personally gone out to buy books that share black excellence to use in my teaching.
